John Allen, a deacon at Antioch Baptist, was voted out of the Church because he asked to pass the Communion plate to Rev. Billy William, a Methodist. John's wife and family asked that their names be taken from the roll also. They were later reinstated. This happened when Rev. R.S. Young was pastor, 1884-1887.

Mrs. Bettie Allen Mercier

The subject of this sketch was born May 09, 1875 and died June 18, 1908, at her home near Beauregard. She was married nearly five years ago to Mr. Tim Mercier, with whom she lived happily until her death. Having known and loved Bettie from early childhood, the writer can truthfully say her life was a grand success. She won friends wherever she went, she was a model neighbor, a good daughter, and sister, a loving wife, and a true, noble Christian. More than once she expressed herself as being ready and willing to go. She spoke of her journey to the Great Beyond and calmly and joyfully as if there were no dark river to cross, no aching hearts to leave behind. All was peace and joy for Jesus went with her, and guided her across to the other side. The day she died, she sang without a tremor three favorite songs and talked of the dear ones in Heaven she would so soon meet. At first she seemed troubled about leaving her widowed mother, but later she said, "Mother, I do not feel troubled now. God will take care of you."

Truly her death was triumphant. Her physician, Dr. E. W. Rowan, of many years experience, said he had witnessed many death scenes, but never had he seen a more glorious ending of a noble life.

Faults, Bettie may had had, (whom of us have not) but viewed throughout the mists of love and sorrow they only serve to bring into greater prominence those virtues we would do well to emulate. Her death has brought the bitter cup of sorrow to many lips, but the thought that she was ready takes away half the sting. There is no terror in a death like hers, she has only gone from the land of the dying to the land of the living.
To her grief stricken mother, brother, husband, and other loved ones who sit in sorrow where her footsteps will never again find echo, we extend profound sympathy.

When they have drained the cup to the bitter dregs, "may the peace that passeth all understanding" come to them from the one who hears the ravens when they cry.

In 1920, W.W. Womack, age 66 is in Travis Co Texas, State Lunatic Asylum. This, however does not imply that he is 'crazy'. In those days, they put old folks in lunatic asylums for dementia, and all kinds of reasons. They are more or less homeless, and perhaps a little 'different'. Perhaps he was despondent over Charity's death.

Harmon F. Bufkin Drops Dead in Hazelhurst

Mr. Harmon F. Bufkin dropped dead late Tuesday afternoon while standing at the Bank of Hazelhurst corner talking to a party of friends. Mr. Bufkin, in company with Dr. F.L. Furr, had been to Jackson to consult a specialist about his health; which had been bad for some months. He was talking with Dr. Burks, when his relative, Webster Millsaps, came up and said: "Harmon, Sidney is in the next call." (World War I) Mr. Bufkin said, "Is that so -- I had not heard it." and collapsed on the sidewalk. Death was instantaneous.

Mr. Bufkin had suffered for some months with arterial sclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. It was known that his condition was serious. The trip to Jackson was probably beyond his strength, and added to the news that his son was soon to be called into active service, brought about the collapse. He has two sons already in the army-- Ernest, now in France, and Ford, training as an aviator in Texas.

Mr. Bufkin was a good man, and a model citizen. He was born and lived all his life in and around Pleasant Valley, and was held in the highest esteem. Only one brother, W.W. Bufkin, of Barlow, survives him, but a number of sisters are still living.

MRS. GEORGIA HERLONG BUFKIN

A long and beautiful life closed on June 29, 1916, at 9 P.M., when at her home near Barlow, Mississippi, Mrs. Georgia Herlong Bufkin lost sight of earthly objects in beholding the fadeless beauty of the life eternal. She was the oldest daughter of George and Emily Herlong, born May 19, 1861, and was married to Mr. W. W. Bufkin, of Barlow, Mississippi, and of this union were born one son and five daughters. The eldest daughter died in infancy. She was converted and joined the M.E. Church, South early in life. She was a faithful church member and her example of inspiration and good cheer will be missed by all.

Mrs. Bufkin was a remarkable woman, truly "she lived for others." Upon her marriage to Mr. Bufkin, she assumed the responsibility of five little motherless boys. A mutual love sprang up between them, for she loved them as her own. She was idolized by her devoted husband and children, for she was a mother indeed. Her children are living expressions of her noble, true life and laudable ambition. For seven long years she was afflicted, being practically a shut in, but these years were not spent in vain. She was a constant sufferer, but no words of murmuring were allowed to escape her lips. Always solicitous about the comfort of others, she often over-taxed her strength in loving service for them. She was confined to her bed for three months the day she died, but she was a patient sufferer and met death unafraid. Her last periods of consciousness were passed in full view of impending death, and at such periods it was a benediction to the writer to be around her bedside. The smallest efforts to contribute to her comfort ---- did not fail to express to God's will was perfect. Just the day before she died she called her husband and children each by name to her bedside, and God gave her strength, weak as she was, to whisper messages of love and counsel for their future welfare. All that her kind physicians, friends and loved ones could do, was done, but in vain. God in his own good time knew what was best. She heard the call of her blessed Master, "It is enough, enter the joys of thy Lord," and as we stood around her bedside and watched her mortal life lifted in to the heavenly life, we felt that her prayers were answered. So sweetly did she fall asleep in Jesus, we could not tell when the tired heart had ceased to beat.

The funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at Old Rehoboth Church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Young, assisted by Brother Grimes. A large number of her relatives and friends attended the funeral, but her dear old mother was not able to be present. The mound was covered with beautiful flowers, sent by loving and sorrowing friends, which spoke of their true affection for her. We would not call her back; the toils and sorrows of life are over. Dear loved ones and friends, let us cherish her memory, remembering her good deeds and forgetting her mistakes, try to emulate her Christian virtues. She is now forever at rest with her Savior, from whence her beautiful influence reaches earthward inviting us all to be of good cheer and follow her to where there is no death, no sorrow, no more parting, where all is love.

First let me congratulate you on a most complete genealogy, which as you pointed out, is the work of many contributors. I am descended from a Perry King and his wife, Mary, who were listed in the Jackson Co Mississippi census in 1820 and next I found them in Hinds Co Mississippi in 1850. Mary was widowed by that time and her children, Perry, Jr., Elizabeth, Mary, Harriet, and William lived with her. Daughter Elizabeth was widowed and appeared as Elizabeth Thomas, and her daughter, Ophelia Thomas, is listed in the household as well.

I am descended from Elizabeth King Thomas and Ophelia Thomas Rimes. In your Bufkin lineage, Bessie Bufkin is listed as married to Charles Edward King, son of William and Caroline King. One of their sons is William Perry King who married Myrtie Caston.
