This letter copied from the Felts book, dated November 18, 1963, to Mrs. Cleo Felts O'Neal of Hemphill, Texas from Jim Patterson
Dear Cleo:
Several years ago my mother, Mrs. Ella Burkett Patterson of Mendenhall, Mississippi showed me a letter that you had written her about the death of your mother, Aunt Mattie Felts. If I remember correctly, my mother told me that Aunt Mattie was the last one of the children of the first marriage of our grandfather, William Jefferson (Billie) Burkett, to die. Some of the uncles and aunts of this marriage that I remember were Uncles Davis, Jack and Lee Burkett. Two of the aunts I remember were Aunt Liza who married Mr. Bob Bridges, who was the postmaster at Harrisville, Mississippi for a long time and the other aunt whose name I do not remember (Eliza Mariah) married Mr. (Andrew) Green Barlow. They lived at Harrisville in the early 1900's and then moved to Texas.
My mother was of the second marriage of Grandpa Burkett who married Dinna Mullican Gates. There were three children by this marriage. My mother, Dennie Ella Burkett, John Gates Burkett and Nannie Burkett. My mother married Hugh T. Patterson, Aunt Nannie married R.T. Brown, and who Uncle John married I do not know. Aunt Nannie and Uncle John lived at Converse, Louisiana until their deaths in the 1940's. Aunt Nannie had a son, Burkett Brown and Uncle John had a daughter, Mae Burkett, both of whom I remember and have seen when I was a child. My Father and Mother lived at Mendenhall all their married life and had three sons and two daughters. The daughters are Jennie Steen and Otto Patterson of Mendenhall, Mississippi. James T. (Jim), myself who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, Earl who lived in Meridian, Mississippi until his death on August 24, 1962 and Bowers, a retired Naval Officer who lives in San Diego, California.
My mother, Ella B. Patterson, died on May 30, 1959 from a stroke and is buried in Mendenhall, Mississippi and lived to be 83 years of age. My father, Hugh T. Patterson, died on March 5, 1961. He lived to be almost 87 years of age and is also buried at Mendenhall, Mississippi. My brother, Earl, died of a sudden heart attack on August 24, 1962 at Meridian, Mississippi and is buried at Hazlehurst, Mississippi. My sisters, Jennie Steen and Otto live now at the old home place in Mendenhall, Mississippi. The grim reaper certainly takes our loved ones away from us over the years and one certainly misses them and has not one to go back to see at our old homes.
There are lots of Burkett relatives who live in Jackson, Mississippi whose names I could enumerate but time and space will not permit.
I had thought of writing you some years earlier but failed to do so. In going thru some papers the other day, I found your name and address and decided it would be well to write you now. Thought you would appreciate knowing what little I could write you about my family and their deaths in recent years.
Sincerely, James T. (Jim) Patterson |
Note from Roberta Patterson of San Diego, California 2000, daughter of Archie Bowers Patterson
Yes, I know where the old home place was at Mendenhall. That is where I went to visit when I was 5 and 12 years old. As this story goes, when Hugh and Ella got married, they built a very little house and as the babies came and the family grew, the house got one addition after another. It was all wood and as I remember it had a combination living-bedroom where Hugh and Ella slept when we were there. Probably gave us guests from California their bedroom. The girls each had a bedroom when we were there - probably one was for the girls and one for the boys when all the children were all living at home. There was a large family kitchen with the big iron stove right in the middle and a couple of small rooms to the rear. One of them being the bathing room where we took our Saturday night bath in a big round galvanized tub. I think the other room might have been a pantry. There was also a large dining room with a big table, chairs and benches. The first time I went there was no running water in the house. The house had a nice front porch where Grandma had pretty flowers and a large back porch where she did the laundry in two galvanized tubs - one for washing and one for rinsing, I think there was a wringer also. There was a hand water pump on the porch. There were out buildings around the house - a smoke house, a little shed, a large barn and last but least, a two hole out-house - being a city kid, I really had a problem with that. There were animals, a cow that had a calf while we were visiting, 2 pigs and some piglets, a mule that kicked me in the head, a few cats and lots of chickens running all over the place. Add to this a great vegetable garden - we ate really good at Grandma and Grandpa's!
I also remember 'Aunt' Molly churning butter and helping Grandma with the chores. She was a colored mammy that had been with the family for years and when she died, how they all mourned. There were several old brick fireplaces in the house and Christmas Day, 1953, the house burned to the ground. They lost everything and Grandma was never the same after that. Their three sons put up money to build them a little two bedroom house on the property and I'm sure everyone in the community helped them in someway. The house is no longer there. I understand a Doctor now owns the property and has built a home way back off the road. Grandpa kept the land all cleared off and it is now very over grown. There was quite a bit of land - I have no idea how much. I think it was named Pine Street.
Grandma was quite a seamstress and sewed for the rich people in town. She was a charter member of the First Baptist Church and furnished flowers for the church from her lovely garden.
Grandpa was one of the founders of the town of Mendenhall. He was the surveyor for Simpson County. He went all over the area surveying with that mule and a cart. I heard he could not read or write - but I wonder it that's really true? I'm guessing he was probably well known in the community. I was told by several that he had quite a temper and you better not question his surveying. Writing this has really brought back a lot of nice memories. I never got the impression these people had any money - the fact that the boys helped after the fire sort of proves it.
Hugh, Ella, Jennie Steen and Otto are all buried in the Mendenhall Cemetery, side by side between rows R and S - I saw the graves in June of 1998. |

Information from his daughter, Roberta living in San Diego, California in 2000:
As the story goes my father jumped on a freight train in Mendenhall, Mississippi, in 1917 when he was 15 years old and went to New Orleans, lied about his age and joined the Navy and was sent to San Diego, California. After serving his two years he was discharged. He immediately rejoined the Navy, legally this time. He spent 30 years in the medical corps and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He was stationed at the U.S. Navy Hospital in San Diego where he met my mother who was secretary to the Commanding Officer (she had come from Boston Massachusetts) . He was sent to China three different times, for two years each time. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when WWII broke out and also served a lot of time in the South Pacific Islands.
Following his naval retirement, he went to work for the County of San Diego for 20 years in the medical field at the county hospital.
After my mother died of cancer in 1951, he married a lady from our Baptist church who is from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and they had a baby girl (she already had a daughter). So now there was his, hers and theirs. |
