Generation 3 continued

This information for the following Taylor family provided by Gelene Rice Johnson, who is now deceased. I am sorry to say, but much of this genealogy is questionable based on my research and the Family Bible of John Madison Taylor. --Susan March 2003--

8.
Emiline3 Hilton, (William2, Mr.1)   daughter of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born October 12, 1822 in South Carolina & died June 05, 1850.

She married John Madison Taylor.   He was born January 15, 1810, and died April 18, 1872 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, burial in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Simpson Co Mississippi.

Gelene Rice and Elizabeth Jordan have information that John married second to a woman named Mary A. "Polly", but no maiden name is known, and that they had children:

Hiram M., Jefferson D., Sara Elizabeth, James Ranze, Martha, Jane, and Mary F.
According to 1860 and 1870 census, the name is Hezekiah / Ezekiah, instead of Hiram.

The records I have show that both John and Emiline died in 1850. My records show that  John is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi, and Gelene said she has been told that Emiline was also buried there in an old part of  the cemetery, most of  which were unmarked graves and unclaimed, and these had been pushed off to provide new burial plots. Obviously, John did not die in 1850!

Update November 2002
Rick Engelhardt, a descendant of  the Taylor family, has in  his possession,  the Family
Bible, which tells that John Taylor was married to Sarah Hilton.   Is this the same as Emeline?  Perhaps Emeline was a first or middle name?   Dates he copied from John's tombstone, are now shown above.    A family tree, origin unknown, in Rick's possession,  gives Sarah Hilton Taylors', date of birth as April 23, 1819, and dying in 1853.   The would  leave to question if Sarah is the same as Emeline. However, based on census, Sarah/Emaline must be deceased by 1850 or they have divorced, because John is married to Mary 'Polly' at that time.

Note from Susan:

I find John M. Taylor in the 1850 Simpson Co census, age 39, Polly, age 25, Louissa C., age 16, Margaret A., age 14, Henry B., age 12, Rebecca A., age 11, Ameline P., age 7, Anna J., age 5, James C.H., age 4, and John Alford, age 3. --Obviously, Polly is not the mother of Louisa, Margaret, Henry, and probably Rebecca, but could possibly be the mother of the others.

I find John M., age 49, and Mary A. Taylor, age 29, in Harrisville, Simpson Co, 1860, living next door to Wm. I. Hilton, with children: Amy J., age 15, James C., age 14, John A., age 12, Hezekiah, age 8, Jefferson D., age 4, Sarah E., age 2, James R., age 3 month.

In 1870, they live in Beat 3, Westville, Simpson Co Mississippi, #223/223, John, shown with the initial W. instead of M., age 59, Mary E., age 49, Ezekiah, age 19, Jeff D., age 15, Sarah E., age 12, James, age 10, Martha, age 8, Jane, age 5, and Mary F., age 5, all born in Mississippi. Also in the home is J. Phillips, age 32, a black farmer.

Living next door is son, William Taylor, age 29, Elizabeth, age 23, and Jane E., age 10, all born in Mississippi.

Polly, commonly a nickname for Mary, may be the same wife in 1850-60 census', though she only aged 5 years in 10, and aged 20 years between 1870-1880. That is not uncommon for these records!

This family will need much more research to prove if Emaline and Sarah are the same, and who the mothered each of John M. Taylor's children.
