They had 10 children, only 4 names known. The Interstate Progress: July 1951 Logansport, Louisiana Avis Grantham, Merline Stephens Escape Drowning by Nina Curry, Bethel reporter Merline and Frankie Stephens and Avis and Shirley Grantham narrowly escaped drowning in the Sabine River Thursday. The D.P. Grantham's, the Charlie Stephens, the O.E. Grantham's of Shreveport, Mrs. Willie Creech and Wightman Hilton were spending the day with A.D. Barlow on the river. A.D. Barlow and Charlie Stephens were sitting on the bank watching the four girls playing in the water. The girls moved on down the river. Shirley got into deep water and the other three went in after her. The men thought that they were still playing until they discovered there was only three of them. They rushed down the river, got the three out, and wanted to know where the other one was. The girls could only point to the river. Charlie Stephens, who was just out of the sanitarium after an appendicitis operation, dived but could not find Avis. Mr. Barlow saw one bubble in the water and they found her by that. Avis and Merline were given first aid on the spot. Both were rushed to a doctor and Avis spent a couple of days in the Sandifer Sanitarium. |
