DARLING BARLOW, son of WILLIAM BRYANT BARLOW and NANCY HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON, was born March 26, 1841, in Perry Co Mississippi, and died August 11, 1926 in Houston, Harris Co Texas, burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co Texas.

He married SUSANNAH CRAKER / CRACKER, daughter of Issac of Alabama on February 14, 1861 in Monticello, Lawrence Co Mississippi. She was born c1838 in Alabama, death time and place unknown.

In 1860, Darling, age 19, was living a few doors from his parents, with Greenberry and Harriet Sumrall. There has been some speculation that Harriet was also a daughter of Bryant and Nancy, but I believe that was disproven.

I was unable to find Darling in an 1870 or 1900 census

In 1880, Darling (D. Barlow), single, age 30, born in Mississippi, parents birthplaces unknown, is a boarder, working on the farm of Green T. Gilbert and family in Precinct 5, Parker Co Texas.

In 1910, Darling, (D.Barlow), single, age 69, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Georgia, was a hired hand in the home of R.V. and Ida Tompkins in Precinct 3, Harris Co Texas.

In 1920, Darling, (D.Barlow), single, age 77, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Georgia, either lives alone, or with the J.W. Anderson family in Precinct 3, Harris Co Texas.

On 04 August 1866 he joined the Providence Baptist Church in Perry Co /now Forrest County. He was dismissed from the church in April 1874 for abandoning his family and not giving a satisfactory explanation to the membership. What actually happened is not known! In the 1880 Parker Co Texas census, Darling is listed as working on a farm. The 1880 Jasper Co Mississippi census lists S. -Susannah- Barlow and four children, Ed, Isa Belle, Dona Jane and Henry H. Darling is next listed in the 1910 Harris Co Texas census, working on a rice farm in the eastern part of Harris Co. On 27 Mar 1926 Darling applied for a Confederate Pension in Harris Co Texas and was awarded the pension. He was living at the Harris County Home when he applied. On 11 August 1926 Darling died of bladder cancer at age 85. He is buried in lot 45, section D1, Evergreen Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co Texas. A Government marker has been set since we found his burial place in 1999.

TIMELINE of DARLING BARLOW, by Jan Barlow

Darling Barlow was the youngest son of William Bryant Barlow and Nancy Eraton Herrington Barlow. He was born in 1841.

He was listed with his father in the 1850 census.

In the 1860 census he was listed with Granbury Sumerall in Jones Co.

On 14 February 1861 Darling married Susannah Cracker in Monticello, Lawrence Co Mississippi.

Darling enlisted as a Pvt in Co B 7th Battn MS Inf on 03 May 1862 and was paroled as a POW on 07 July 1863 after the fall of Vicksburg. During October 1864, he either joined or was conscripted into Co A, 3rd Battn MS Inf. On 30 November 1864 he was captured at Franklin Tennessee and was sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois as a POW.

Darling mustered into Co F, 5th USV Inf -a "Galvanized Yankee"- on 06 April 1865, apparently to get out of the prisoner camp. This was three days before Lee's surrender. Was sent to Ft Riley, Kansas, where on 28 May 1865, he deserted. (Microfilm Roll 40 Series M 1017, Jan Barlow)

The birth date of Dona Jane Barlow on 28 December 1866, suggests Darling had been mustered out of the USV and returned to Mississippi by April 1866. Note: the 1900 census record has an April 1867 birth date for Dona Jane. This would have him in Mississippi in July 1866.

SUSANNAH CRAKER/CRACKER BARLOW

Susannah was a daughter of Isaac Craker/Cracker. She was born in 1838 in Alabama. She was listed with her father in both the 1850 and the 1860 censuses. They were in Jones Co Mississippi in 1850 and in Monticello, Lawrence Co in 1860.

Several questions arise.

Where did Isaac Cracker live in Jones Co relative to William Bryant Barlow?

How did Darling and Susannah meet? Was there any connection between Isaac Cracker and the area called Cracker's Neck in Jones Co?

On 14 February 1861 Susannah married Darling Barlow in Monticello, Lawrence Co Mississippi.

The next reference to Susannah is the 1880 Jasper Co Mississippi census. The listing is S. Barlow and four children, Ed, I., D.J. and H. They are Susannah, Ed, Isa Belle, Dona Jane and Henry H.

The census records for 1900, 1910 and 1920 support the 1880 census record and this identification.

The ages of the children in 1880 are: Ed-18, Isa Belle-16, Dona Jane-14 and Henry H.-10.

The 1900 census gives the ages as: Isa Belle-25, Dona Jane-33, and Henry H.-30.

In 1910 the ages given are: Isa Belle-45, Dona Jane-43, and Henry H.-45.

In 1920 the ages are: Isa Belle-55, Dona Jane-54 and Henry H.-60.

No additional records after the 1880 census have been found that identify Susannah or Ed.

Dona Jane married W. J. Wade in 1887 in Jones Co. Had the family moved from Jasper Co to Jones Co?

In 1900, Isa Belle, Dona Jane and Henry H. were in adjacent census households in Jones Co Mississippi

Is Susannah buried in Jones Co? Did she remarry?

What happened to Ed and where is he buried?

Children of Darling and Susannah are:

ED or EDNA BARLOW, was born c1862 in Mississippi. While the 1880 census indicates Ed to be a son of Susannah, and a farmer, Lora Beth Wright gives the name as Edna, and tells that she married COTTON ROBINSON. I was not able to locate any 1900 census for the Robinson family or for an Ed Barlow

ISA BELLE BARLOW, born c1864 in Mississippi.

She apparently did not marry, but had 4 children by her sister's husband, JEFFERSON WADE.

She married WILLIAM JEFFERSON 'JEFF' WADE c1887.  The son of Elisha Benton Wade and Harriet E. Knight, he was born December 12, 1854, and died May 04, 1920, burial in Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Jones Co Mississippi.
Jeff had previously been married to JOAN LANGSTON, and had children: Hiram, Bettis and Lenora Wade.
