HENRY BARLOW3, son of WILLIAM BRYANT BARLOW and NANCY HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON, was born  c1820-21 in Mississippi, and died c1885.

He married CYNTHIA JANE SKELLY or STRICKLAND, c 1868. Cynthia was born May 1846 in Georgia, and died between 1900 and 1910.
Some say her maiden name was Strickland; others think she was a Skelly. A marriage record found in Perry Co shows a Henry Barlow marrying a Synthia Skelly in 1872, however, it appears that Henry and Synthia are already married and have children in the 1870 census.   Looking through 1880 census records for a Cynthia Stickland or Skelly, I did not find any Skelly's in Georgia or Mississippi, but did find a Strickland family in Lumpkin Co Georgia, head of household, E.W. Strickland, with a 35 year old sister, Cynthia, unmarried living in his household.  I think this would be a good chance of being her, but do not know how to prove it.

CLEMA BRYANT BARLOW, born October 1874, and died April 26, 1922.
He married MYRTLE BOST on 11 August 1912, county illegible.  She apparently died before 1920.

In 1920 Forest Co Mississippi, I find a Coreen Barlow, age 6, adopted daughter of Aman and Mary Bazar.  I wonder if perhaps Myrtle died in childbirth, and Bryant not thinking he could raise a child alone, let her be adopted out.  Can anyone confirm?

2.  VENIE MYRTLE4 BARLOW, daughter of Henry Barlow and Cynthia Skelly/Stickland, was born May 31, 1870, and died August 30, 1974. She lived to be 104 years of age and is buried at the Barlow Cemetery in Macedonia, Forest Co Mississippi.

She married WILLIAM A. CRAFT on August 14, 1887 in Perry Co Mississippi, the son of Moses Craft and Sarah Powell. He was born May 17, 1871 in Jasper Co Mississippi and was killed in a sawmill accident July 19, 1902. He is buried in the Barlow Cemetery at Macedonia, Forest Co Mississippi along with Venie.
The Barlow Cemetery is near the Tallahala Creek where most local people floated logs down to Moss Point and had to walk back for about 70 miles. This was in the late 1800's and early 1900's.    Information from Roland Barlow and Who "Married Whom in Perry Co." by Jean Strickland and Patricia Edwards.

Clara Woodall visited her in 1969 and verified that Venie was indeed the grand-daughter of Bryant Barlow and Nancy. She said her father was near 50 when he married and died when she was 15 -- he was 67-68. She said that he had 6 brothers and 9 sisters....

A descendant of the Crafts, David Thompson - writes:
I met Venie Myrtle Barlow on her 100 birthday. She was sewing by a lamp and she threaded the needle without glasses. Delightful lady.

ACTIVE AND ALERT, LOCAL WOMAN WILL BE 99 SATURDAY

By Dana Gonzalez

In 1870, the 18th president of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, was struggling, in his second year in the presidency, to reunite the North and South following the Civil War. In Perry County, Miss., a daughter Venie Myrtle, was born to Cynthia and Henry Barlow.

On Saturday, Mrs. Venie Myrtle Barlow Craft will celebrate her 99th birthday anniversary. All Week, friends and relatives have been dropping by the home of Mr. and Mrs. Q.P. Murphy, 703 Second St., her son-in-law and daughter with whom she has lived for the past 30 years, to wish her happy birthday and reminisce about by-gone days.

"I remember when Hattiesburg was only a little general store," she says. "We used to hitch up the ox team to come buy a little flour, maybe a little meat and sometimes a little cloth for three or four cents a yard. Then when I was around five, they put the railroads through and other stores started popping up all around."

Reared in Perry County, Mrs. Craft married her childhood sweetheart, William A. Craft in 1887. Giggling and blushing like a schoolgirl when asked about her courting days, she said, "He was the only one. There never was anyone else either before I married him or after he left." In 1903, William Craft "left": he died, leaving his wife with seven children to rear.

To support her children, Mrs. Craft worked as a field hand, took in sewing, and later took a course in midwifery and assisted in delivering Perry County babies.

Of her seven children, three are still living" Mrs. Murphy, Ransom Craft of Rt. 6 and Oliver Craft of Monroe La. She has 22 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, "with more on the way all the time," she beams.

Although she hasn't worked in the garden in about six years, Mrs. Craft remains very active. With only the aid of a cane, she takes morning and evening walks down the street. She has not lost her art as a seamstress and still makes dresses for herself. Until very recently, she did a good deal of embroidering and crocheting.

Daily, Mrs. Craft reads her Bible and the newspaper to keep up with current events. Very proud of the fact that she is still able to read without glasses, she boast, "don't like glasses, they only get in my way." Having four great grandsons fighting in Vietnam, she is concerned about the war. But on the subject of Apollo moon flights, she comments, "They don't have any business up there, God didn't intend such things."

Although a member of the Corinth Baptist Church in Perry County, she does not attend services regularly any longer due to a growing difficulty in hearing. Atypical of her 99 years - young age, she likes chewing gum and candy and is able to eat all types of food.

When asked to what she attributed her long life, Mrs. Craft replied, "I've lived my life for other people. I've always done unto others as I would have them do unto me." She has one living brother, Narvel Barlow, 93, a resident of Columbia.

In Memory of Walter Thornton

It has been my privilege to count the large and splendid family of the late Walter Thornton Sr. as our dear friends over the past 19 years.  When Bob dropped by our office a few weeks ago and told us of the untimely death of Walter,  our hearts were broken. I do not think Beat Five, Copiah County, has lost a more noble, honest, upright and law abiding citizen than Walter was; no mother a more obedient and faithful son; no good wife and children a more thoughtful and beloved husband and father. Our hearts were made to rejoice as we went to the dear old country church and heard his good pastor say how thoughtful he was of the ministry and of his loyalty and faithfulness to the church in all of her work.

Surely, his life though not long in years, was fruitful and worthy. We commend the large family to the God of all grace, who is able to keep that which you have committed unto him against that day.

Your friend and brother, Major P.B. Green
Imogene Thornton was born November 05, 1931 and died April 11, 1932; burial in New Zion Cemetery, Crystal Springs, Copiah Co Mississippi.

Five months and six days marked the brief span that precious Imogene brightened and blessed the lives of her devoted parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Thornton.  Just one short week and the darling baby girl, like unto a fairy in the home, succumbed to disease, only to be transplanted from earth to God's own realm.

The funeral services were conducted at New Zion Baptist Church at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning of this week by the Rev. B. T. Bishop of Clinton, a dear friend and former pastor of the family. The interment was made in the family lot adjoining the church. Little Imogene rests beside her grandfather Thornton, to await the Resurrection Morn. Her uncles, John Allen, Bob and Wiley Thornton, and Henry Barlow, served as pallbearers.

Baby Imogene was the only granddaughter of the family, and the devotion shown her by the grandparents and other members of the family was beautiful to see. They feel so keenly with the broken hearted parents this great sorrow of separation, but with a faith which now sees dimly and then "face to face" they await that glad hour when mortal shall put on immortality and death shall be swallowed up in victory.

They will miss her oh so much but think how happy she is now that she's an angel, safe in Jesus arms, shining in the light of God.

"Back to Jesus Christ who sent her,  They return the precious token, Back to God who kindly lent her  With that purity unbroken!"
