HENRY ZAIR BARLOW, son of Henry 'Buck' Barlow and Charity Millsaps, was born October 28, 1826 in Copiah Co Mississippi, and died July 19, 1879 in McKinney, Collin Co Texas, burial in Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Collin Co Texas.

He married MARY MANGHUM SWINNEY on February 11, 1849 in Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi. The daughter of Cyrus Pate Swinney and Charity Manghum or McDonald, she was born April 14, 1834 in Alabama, and died May 22, 1901 in Mississippi, burial in Rehoboth Cemetery, Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi.

FOUR BURNED TO DEATH When Home of G.W. Howell at Old Landing is Destroyed by Fire

John Q. Barlow, aged 66 years, 8 months and 19 days, his wife, Rhoda, aged 54 years, 4 months and 10 days, and their daughter, Arcola, aged 17 years, 9 months and 24 days, were burned to death and G.W. Howell fatally burned in the fire that destroyed the home of Mr. Howell at Old Landing on the Ouachita river five miles east of here at 6 o'clock Saturday morning, March 24, 1917.

Mr. and Mrs. Barlow who are Mrs. Howell's parents arrived here just one week before from their home at Glancy, Mississippi, on a visit with their daughter and are survived by four other children, Homer, Wayne, Lucian and Katie.

Mr. Howell had arisen to start a fire in the stove in the room occupied by the Barlows and was using gasoline out of a can which exploded throwing burning oil all over the bed clothing on the beds on which they were sleeping and himself, causing the room to become a roaring furnace in a moment. Mr. Howell rushed from the house and jumped into the river about thirty yards distance from the house but he was so badly burned about the face and lower limbs that he died at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Howell and their two small children were in an adjoining room and escaped without injury in their night clothes.

The limbs and arms of all those who perished in the fire were entirely burned off and their bodies burned to a crisp and all three buried in one grave in the Huttig cemetery late Saturday afternoon. The remains of Mr. Howell were laid to rest at 10 o'clock Monday morning.

He married Arcola Roberts on August 15, 1939 in Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi. The daughter of Jesse Roberts, she was born August 01, 1899 in Copiah Co Mississippi. She had previously been married to Wilfred Hurley Hodges, who was killed in a car wreck in December 1934, and had children: Emma Jane Hodges, Ed, Willard H, Oscar N., Jimmy H., Pearly Dale, Bernice, and Josie B. Hodges. In 1920, Lucian and his cousin, Jim Brown Barlow were living as boarders in the home of Jennie Conn

Child of Lucien and Arcola: John, Jr., 'Buddy' who married Barbara Spangler, and live, as of 1999 in Myrtle Point Oregon, and they have one son, David, who in 1999, was living in Salt Lake City Utah.

Charity Millsaps Barlow, born December 20, 1884 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died July 09, 1909 in McKinney, Collin Co Texas, burial in Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Collin Co Texas. She did not marry. In 1900, she was living with her uncle, Glenn Jasper in Collin Co Texas. Death Certificate

Anthony Wayne Barlow, born Jne 27, 1888, and died November 06, 1960, burial in Wesson Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.

He married Annie Mae Stapp on August 10, 1923 in Gilbert Louisiana. The daughter of Jim Stapp and Annie Reed, she was born April 05, 1908 in Wesson, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died February 14, 1927 in Jackson, Hinds Co Mississippi, burial in Antioch Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.

I was unable to locate Anthony in a 1910, or 1920 census.

(Hattie had previously been married to Charles Mohon. I find a Charles Mohon in Copiah Co Mississippi 1910, wife Mattie, is too old to be our Hattie)

I could not locate them in a 1920 census.

Homer and Hattie had 4 sons, 3 who died as infants, 1918, 1922, and 1925, as well as:

John Bufkin Barlow, born October 31, 1928 and died March 05, 1999 in Gregg Co Texas. He married Rita Williams on May 25, 1952. The daughter of James Williams and Mattie Waltman, she was born November 31, 1931, and died May 02, 1992. Child: Mary Lynn married Richard Jones, and had a daughter, Jessica Ann Jones

Arcola Barlow, born May 31, 1899 in Copiah Co Mississippi, and died March 17, 1917 in Huttig, Union Co Arkansas, burial in a mass grave with her parents in Huttig Cemetery, Union Co Arkansas.

He married 2. Lela Pearl Barlow on November 22, 1936 in Jackson, Hinds Co Mississippi. His second cousin, the daughter of Thomas Uriah Barlow and Delta Zenobia Pitts, she was born November 19, 1985, and died May 30, 1987. They had no children.

BARLOW PIONEERED CATTLE, TIMBER IMPROVEMENTS IN COUNTY, STATE / From the Copiah County Courier dated December 16, 1981

When a history of Copiah County is written, the name of Frank D. Barlow will certainly be included as one of its prominent citizens.

Barlow, now 90, has been a driving force in the development of the registered cattle industry in this county, and in the development of the county's timber resources, both mainstays of the economy for many years.

Frank Barlow was one of the early pioneers in seeing the future importance of the cattle industry to Mississippi and Copiah County, and first purchased 40 acres of land when a young man. He continued to acquire property, and to buy pure bred Hereford cattle throughout the years, increasing his land holdings until he reached a total ownership of 1,425 acres in the county, and a fine herd of registered cattle.

His impact has reached far beyond his personal holdings because of his interest in the cattle industry and in the youth of the county. Included in those cattle he purchased were a number of mature registered cows, which were expecting calves. Many of these calves he gave to county youths through the 4-H Club program and Future Farmers of America organization, enabling young men interested in farming to get a good start, and allowing them to do so with a limited number of registered stock. Many of these same young men have grown to adulthood, and are numbered among Copiah County's farmers today.

Just as he influenced the cattle industry in this county, Barlow was one of the first residents to recognize the potential of forest products grown in Copiah County, and to use modern forest management techniques to grow an ever increasing amount of high quality timber per acre.

Included in his land holdings, which he accumulated over the years, are many acres of timberland, much of it having what is considered by experts as some of the highest quality timber being grown over a wide area.

More than 20 years ago, Barlow donated 20 acres of land to the youth of Copiah County for a forestry demonstration plot, to perpetuate awards for members of the 4-H and FFA organizations. That plot is, today, still maintained and used by youths involved in those two organizations.

Frank Barlow was born Oct. 4, 1891, the son of Dr. Harmon H. Barlow and Katie D. Barlow. His father was a medical doctor in the Barlow Community for many years, and his mother served as dietitian and matron for what is now Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, until her retirement.

Barlow's farming experience started at a relatively early age, and with better than average success. In 1904, then a youth of 13, he attended the World's Fair in St. Louis, having earned his expenses from farming.

He graduated from the Barlow Public School in 1908, and attended Southwestern University (S.P.U.), Clarksville, Tennessee, from 1908 to 1909, and in 1909 to 1910, he attended Mississippi A & M College (now Mississippi State University). He then returned home and served as a rural mail carrier in Barlow for four years.

Three sons were born to Barlow's first marriage. Frank D. Barlow, Jr., now at Falls Church, Virginia, Harmon Staton Barlow, now of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and his other son, Harold E. Barlow, who was killed in World War II in 1944, and was survived by a son, Dr. Gene Staton Barlow, now a dentist living in Jackson, with his offices in Pearl.

After his first wife died, Barlow married Miss Pearl Barlow, who aided greatly in the rearing and education of his sons.

In 1946, Barlow sold his home and 800 acres of land in the western part of the county to Dr. J. D. Biggart, and he and his wife moved north to Gallman where the Rolling Hills Country Club is now located. He later sold that property to the Country Club, and moved to Hazlehurst.

In addition to his contributions in the field of forestry and in the development of the cattle industry in the area, Barlow has had a significant impact on state legislation for many years. He was elected to the Mississippi State Senate from Copiah County in 1943, and served continuously there from 1944 until 1960, having been re-elected for four terms. He served with distinction in the Senate as a member of the Finance, Forestry and Agricultural committees, and much of the cattle andforestry development in the state is a result of this work, especially with regard to the present Mississippi Forestry Commission.

He was instrumental in the planning and building of the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

Barlow has always been active in his church, first at Barlow and in the Hazlehurst United Methodist Church, having served in many official capacities in each church.

Barlow was a director of the Federated Cooperatives for 14 years, and has held membership in many civic organizations. He presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Hazlehurst.

Now 90 years of age, and not as active as he once was, Barlow is still vitally interested in the affairs of his community, his state and nation, and maintains a keen interest in the development of Copiah County's timber resources.

M.M. (Pete) Barlow, 43, district geologist for Champlin Refining Company, died Sunday evening en route to a hospital in an ambulance.
Barlow, a resident of Wichita Falls about 14 months, was stricken suddenly in his home at 1819 Eleventh and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Owens & Brumley Funeral Chapel with Dr. Alfred H. Freeman, pastor of First Methodist Church, officating.
The body will be taken to Fort Worth for services Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Central Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife and a daughter, Margie Barlow, both of Wichita Falls; his parents. Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Barlow of Fort Worth; one sister, Mrs. Jack Watson of Fort Worth, and four brothers, Robert Barlow of Chicago, E.C. Barlow of Odessa, and B.K. and C.G. Barlow, both of Fort Worth.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Robertson Mueller Harper-Eighth Avenue. Burial will be in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth.
Mr. Barlow was born in Barlow, Mississippi, and lived in Fort Worth for 70 years.
He worked for General Industrial Supply for 22 years and was named top salesman for 21 years. He was also named employee of the year several times.
Mr. Barlow was an Army veteran of World War II and served with Gen. George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church and the Open Door Sunday school class.
His wife, Marguerite 'Margie' Barlow, died in 1978. Survivors: Nieces and nephews.
