Family stories, photos and documents from Paul Longa, great-grandson of John and Martha.
5.  JOHN WESLEY BARLOW, JR., born c1862 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and died after 1900, perhaps in Indian Territory.

He married MARTHA ELIZABETH 'LIZZIE' BUTLER on 02 November 1883 in Tangipahoa Parish Louisiana, (click to view original) when she was 14 years of age, though the license shows 18.  She was born February 22, 1869, and died October 26, 1956.  It is not known who her father was, she is living with her widowed mother, Martha Butler in the 1870 census.  Lizzie is buried at Beulah Methodist Church Cemetery, near Marthaville, Natchitoches Parish Louisiana, along with her second husband, Tom Blankenship and her third husband, James H. Ballard, and many of her children and grandchildren.

See more about Lizzie Butler Barlow and Tom Blankenship  / census records there will list the Barlow children.
According to family tradition, John Wesley Barlow, Jr. sometime after 1894, and before December 1897, rode out on his horse and disappeared never to be heard from again. Several family rumors have surfaced throughout the years, but the one most likely comes from his son, Newt.

According to Newt, John came home in a hurry, told Newt to saddle up a fresh horse; that he had just shot and killed a man, the law was after him. He told Newt good-bye, and rode out of town. We don't know why he allegedly shot the man - that's where the rumors come in.....

It is not known where John, Jr. went, but the family heard rumors that he was in Oklahoma, and married to an Indian woman.

Military Records showing a John W. Barlow had signed up with the Rough Riders in Caddo, Oklahoma, Indian Territory have proven to be John Wesley Barlow, Jr.

Newt told family that Lizzie left her children with family in Harrisville, Mississippi, headed west in a covered wagon, stopping in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. John had family there, it is supposed Lizzie had gone there looking for him. Again, this is only speculation. Newton Wesley Barlow, the oldest child, probably no older than 12 or 13, took his brothers, and sister, hired on with a wagon train traveling west to Louisiana to find his mother...she may have sent for them, that is not known. Evidently, Newt found Lizzie, because he and his siblings are with Lizzie in the 1900 census of Sabine Parish Lousiana. Lizzie had had John declared legally dead, and had married Tom Blankenship in Sabine Parish Louisiana on December 12th, 1897.

Enlistment papers describe him as having blue eyes, dark brown hair, dark complexion, 5' 7" tall, a farmer, age 28, born in Simpson Co Mississippi, date of enlistment, May 14, 1898. Permanent scars noted are scars on both knees, small scar near spine above right hip, several small scars inside right thigh near ____ (illegible).

The word 'single' appears in the top left corner of the document, I wonder if that is indicating his marital status.

Transcriptions and copies of the original military papers
Children of John and Lizzie are:
In 1900, a John W. Barlow, age 30, born October 1869 in Mississippi is living in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory with wife, Mattie B., age 25, and daughter, Namoma, age 1 month, born April 1899, whom we believe to be our John, though the record shows this to be his first marriage.   I have not been able to locate any of this family in 1910 or 1920.

THE PASSING OF MRS. DR. W. N. NEELY

As the shades of night were gathering, and about the hour of 7 o'clock P.M., on Saturday, October 22, 1938, and at the Baptist Hospital in the City of Jackson, Mississippi, and while surrounded by most of the members of her family, the gentle and angelic spirit of Mrs. Dr. W. N. Neely, passed from the stage of human action to a better home beyond the skies.

We understand that she was born on August 27, 1877 in Simpson County, and was married to Dr. W.N. Neely on December 10, 1893, and that to this union sixteen children were born, and three of them preceded their beloved mother to the better land. This good woman left as her survivors, her husband, who is a distinguished doctor of Harrisville; and nine sons and four daughters and twenty-four grand-children to mourn her passing.

The sons are: G.D. Neely, Supervisor of District No. 5, Arris Neely, Otto Neely, U. D. Neely, Troy Neely, John Sharp Neely, W.N. Neely, Jr, Emanuel Neely and Robert Neely; and they all live in Simpson County, and also four daughters, the same being Mrs. Virgie Shorter, Mrs. Lilla Berry, Mrs. Mildred Hawkins, and Mrs. Annie Ruth McBride, the latter being of Crystal Springs, and Mrs. Lilla Berry of Washing-ton. The other two daughters being in Simpson County, and all of them being numbered among the best of our entire citizenship.

We understand that the deceased was, during her lifetime, an active, loyal and devout member of the Methodist church at Harrisville and was not only a faithful member of her church, but was a most useful citizen of the community where she lived, and that her entire life was spent in the service of humanity. In the passing of this good women, not only her f amily has sustained an irreparable loss, but Simpson County has also sustained a real loss in her going.

All that was mortal of this good woman was laid to rest in the Harrisville Cemetery on Sunday afternoon following her death, while her loved ones and friends followed her bier to its last resting place. The large crowd that attended her obsequies and the great profusion of flowers placed on her grave fully attested the high esteem in which she was held by those who knew her best, and we are confident that her immortal spirit has gone to a world untainted by sin and untouched by death.

Those who served as pall bearers were: L.H. Kendall, W.P. Harris, Clarence Steen, Estus Haley, A.C. Murray, C.G. Barlow.

DR. W.N. 'PAPPY' NEELY, SR.
1884-1961

He was a beloved Harrisville physician whom so many citizens and many from miles around depended on for all their illnesses. In his early years of practice he went from horseback to buggy to automobile.

He was married to Laura Barlow and raised 12 out of 16 children.

He attended the University of Tennessee Medical School, and graduated in 1899. After 50 years of service the townspeople and surrounding communities celebrated his Golden Anniversary. To express their gratitude a special service was held. At a program sponsored by Harrisville School, Dr. Neely was presented a new Ford car. But the town of Harrisville was not alone in the celebration, the university where he finished medical school gave him its Golden T. Certificate for 50 years of loyal service.

In the first 49 years of his practice he had delivered 3,764 babies. He practiced for several more years. Even after he was unable to travel to his office patients would go to his home for medication.

He was a person that all who knew him will never forget.
Children of Laura and Wilkie are:
23.   VIRGIE C. NEELY, born May 30, 1895, and died May 15, 1982
BARNEY M. NEELY, born November 29, 1896, and died October 03, 1897, burial in Harrisville Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
