Haskell Waller Bufkin says about Dolly:
She was always different, but a gentle soul. She knew how to work in the garden, sweep yards, cook, wash dishes, etc. but could never learn in school. She lived with Granny, Paw, Aunt Hett and Uncle Buck but after Granny's death they put her in Whitfield State Asylum. She did not last very long there.
Carrie Bee Barlow says about Dolly: Mama told me a few things Aunt Dolly did that were extremely funny. When Grandmother Emma had the first stroke it kept her in bed for a day. The next one kept her in bed for 2 days. The third on took her. Aunt Dolly came to Grandmother wanting her to get out of bed because the peaches needed canning for they were getting ripe. When Grandmother finally was able to get out of bed and go the kitchen she found where Aunt Dolly had started putting the peaches in jars. She had put the peaches in jars, added water and corn meal. It was sweet and it was sad. She thought she was helping. That is what counted.

The Hazlehurst Courier, September 26, 1918

Copiah County lost a fine citizen this week in the death of Thomas U. Barlow, which occurred at his home near Barlow on Tuesday, September 24, 1918. Mr. Barlow had been in poor health for sometime. He had the attention of the best medical and surgical skill in the State but he gradually sank under the influence of the disease, until released from his sufferings Tuesday.

Mr. Barlow was a native of the county. He combined all the elements of a good citizen -- industrious, honorable, law abiding, and neighborly. But he was seen at his best in his home. He was devoted to his family a kind and loving father, a devoted and thoughtful husband.

Mr. Barlow will be greatly missed in his community, and The Courier joins with other sorrowing friends in sympathy with the sadly bereaved family.
The Hazlehurst Courier February 12, 1924 / MRS T.U. BARLOW

Mrs. T. U. Barlow died at noon Sunday, February 10th, after an illness lasting several months. The end was not unexpected, but brings grief to many warm friends throughout the county.

Mrs. Barlow was the widow of Thomas U. Barlow. Mr. Barlow died some years ago, leaving his wife and a number of young children. Mrs. Barlow continued to reside on the farm and managed her affairs with such skill that she was able to give all her children a good common school education, and they are all doing well. One daughter, Miss Pearl, taught at Gallman for two sessions and is now a valued member of the faculty of the Quitman school. She has a son in business at Port Arthur, Texas. She was a niece of Mr. E. D. Pitts and of Mrs. W. E. Curtis and was a daughter of Mr. Cicero Pitts. Eight other children, in addition to those above mentioned, survive, the youngest of whom is eight years old.

Only a few months ago Mrs. Barlow seemed in her usual health but she was stricken with that dread malady, cancer, which of late years is beginning to claim more victims than any other disease. Science has seemed almost powerless before its onslaughts. It seems especially sad that her life should end in the very prime of womanhood, when the years of self denial in raising and educating her children were ended; but we know that the good Master is wise in his dispensations and we can but bow to his decrees. That Mrs. Barlow was ready and well prepared to go to our long home we have not the slightest doubt, for she was a truly good woman. She was a loyal member of Rehobeth M.E. church, and her funeral services were held there Monday in the presence of many sorrowing friends.

May the God of the orphaned comfort the bereaved hearts.
Tom and Nobie owned a 115 acre farm just north of the Barlow Community in Copiah Co Mississippi.  The farm was located between what is now Warren Hood Road to the west, Vardeman Road to the east, and near the Port Gibson Road to the north. The farm was sold after their deaths to M.A. Meadows, a store owner on the Port Gibson Road. Elsie Meadows, his daughter, became Mrs. Warren Hood and still owns the land today. No evidence of the old homesite could be found in October 2000 as the land is covered in mature timber and timber has been harvested over the intervening years. (Warren Hood and his wife Elsie Meadows Hood own approximately 15,000 acres of rich timber land in Copiah County today which includes much of the area north of Barlow.)

Information for this family contributed by Hiram Jackson Hodges  308 Whitehall Road   Anderson, South Carolina  29625
Aunt Ruth Hodges in October 28, 1991 writes:
Mary Jane was late in finishing school because her mother had been bitten by a rabid dog and she had to remain at home to care for her mother and family.
Elizabeth Jean Hodges Maskasky / October 30, 1990 writes:
I tried to locate Swinney in the 1900's but had no luck. The Hodges didn't keep much contact with the Swinneys as the Hodges always felt Papa [Zebulon Conway Hodges] married beneath him. He was a teacher and Mary Jane was a student a couple years older than him. The Swinneys borrowed money from Papa to start a company store (selling on credit at high prices to people mostly blacks who never could catch up on payments so they always owed them their salaries). Papa tried to collect some of the money the Swinney's owed him but was run off the property at gun point by one of the Swinney's sons. He washed his hands of them from there on.

Z.C. Hodges, of Brookhaven, Lincoln County, Educator and Lawyer, was born July 6, 1883, in Lincoln County, son of W.J. Hodges and Elizabeth Price Hodges. He is a descendant of some of the oldest Mississippi families, the Hodges, Maxwells, Prices, and Prestridges.

His early education was received in the public schools and through home study. He was married to Miss Mary Swinney at Little Bahala, April 22, 1903.

There are four children: Allie Lee, Z.C., Jr., Harold W., and Hiram J.

Mr. Hodges is a member of the Baptist Church and of the Woodmen of the World.  He has always been interested in education, starting out by teaching school for ten straight years. He studied law in the mean time and was admitted to the bar in due time. Mr. Hodges is a typical Mississippi educator of the present day when rural school education is now recognized as the most important of all in this State. He is the originator of the idea of contests in cooking in the rural schools, and is one of the most enthusiastic advocates of corn clubs and tomato clubs throughout the State. He was quickly chosen as Superintendant of Education in Lincoln after announcing his candidacy......
