Roots & Branches of the Barlow Families of Mississippi
December 2000 Volume I - Issue 2 Hello, and happy holidays to you all. Once again, I will try to bring you all up to date on the happenings in the our family, genealogically speaking. After the reunion in October, I was overwhelmed with folks who contacted me about family, apparently we were much talked about. And I believe Lora Beth has had several orders for her book, Barlow Kinfolks. Most prominent in my mind, is Harvey Thurman Barlow, Jr. of Lubbock Texas, who recalls having been contacted about family genealogy some years ago, but thinking it probably a hoax, he ignored it..and now is sorry that several of his family members were not included in Lora Beth's book. I have since, updated the family tree to include information he contributed, he is a part of the William Jasper Barlow line, who comes down from Henry "Buck" Barlow. His lineage is from Thomas Uriah Barlow, (1866- 1918) and Mary Stanfil. Also, from this same line of Barlows, I was contacted by Wanda Barlow Bonilla and Carrie Bee Barlow, who still live in Mississippi, but have lost contact with all but the closest of family. They are descendants of Hugh Harmon Barlow, (1873 - 1966), and his second wife, Emma Parker. Along the way to compiling these genealogies, I found that our families have several collateral ties to the "Bufkin" family, and the "Douglass" family, both of whom have several ties to the "Conn" family, our Barlow line have only a few actual connections to the Conn family that I have found. Also new this month, is the lineage of Nicols Cicero Barlow, another son of Henry "Buck" Barlow; he was married to Sicily "Douglass", as mentioned in the Douglass family genealogy. In trying to gather the related families in a select branch of family, it gets rather hard to find a stopping place, as the families from those days married first & second cousins, brothers marrying sisters of a neighboring families, until we have a never-ending circle of families involved. But this month, I have tried to combine all my sources and outline the above mentioned families. Please keep in mind as you study these reports, that much of this information is not documented, or is not proven, much comes from word of mouth, census records, cemetery records, obituaries, etc. Not all of this work is my own, it has come from many sources, those that I remember will be given credit, and should you recognize work as your own, please let me know, as I have not always kept resources, and have long ago lost contact with many of you. Much of the credit for these lineages will go to Lora Beth Barlow Wright, the compiler of our special book. If you have corrections or additions, they would be greatly appreciated, and especially would love to be able to add photographs, and documents that would prove the lineages, and give faces to the folks whom I feel like I have known personally having researched and talked about them so much. Both e-mail and snail-mail addresses will appear at the end of this newsletter. Next month, I plan
to work some on the Hiltons as related to the Barlow families, and
we'll see what other families that will lead to. Again, any
contributions of materials will be greatly appreciated.
I will try over the next year, to get many more collateral lines
compiled, so keep your eyes open for your lines.
Last month, I had
mentioned doing snail mail copies of this newsletter to those who
did not have access to computers, for a nominal sum of $6.00 a year,
that was figuring 34 cents for postage, and 15 for copying charges. However,
already I have run into problems with that..as this newsletter,
alone, prints out to 4 pages, not
to mention that I would also have to print out the pages linked
to it..ie.....the William Jasper Barlow, Nicols Cicero Barlow,
Douglass,
Conn and Bufkin, and the photos of Camp Wesley Pine, which would
need to be printed in color. As I began printing out the information,
the Wm. Jasper Barlow family printed out to 18 pages. Thus,
$6.00 will not begin to cover postage and copy charges. I
can not afford to undertake this at my own expense, and do not
want
to ask folks to pay any huge sums of money for, so I am asking
all of you for suggestions. If you know of any families
who do not have access to a computer, and who might be interested
in the
newsletter, if at all possible, arrange to have them "visit" to
see it on your computer, or if these are close family or friends,
perhaps you can print them out copies from your own computer for
their use. I want to reach as many people as possible
with this newsletter, in hopes that they might have new information
and especially photographs to share. In the future, I do
plan to do an updated version of Lora Beth's Barlow Kinfolks....but
don't
want to do just a copy...I want to have lots of new information
to add..my hope is to find where John and Lydia Barlow comes from
and to find parents for my gr-gr grandmother, Flora Ann Byrd, if
that is indeed her maiden name. Others of you are also searching
for answers, perhaps this effort will net some answers for you
as
well. You will remember that for those of you who have computers,
the issues will be free, I will send the URL where you can view,
read or print out the pages. Now...on to newer
things... Luther Hart, from e-mails I have received, seems to be doing much better, though he is not yet able to drive, he is driving his wife and sister crazy having them as chauffeur's. He seems to be in good spirits. He brings news of for our reunion of 2001, which will tentatively be held the last weekend in October. The plans seem to be made, but he still writes that they are "pending". A copy of a letter sent to Luther from Camp Wesley Pines is shown below, and then below that, a letter from Luther in response to my question about the "pending", as I would very much like to have it definite, and get my reservations made for a room, I wouldn't miss this one, and I hope that you can all make your own plans to attend...put in for those days off at work right away...
Photographs of Camp Wesley Pines, it looks really nice. I would love to hear comments and / or suggestions from any of you interested in participating in this, and if anyone that lives near can help Luther in these arrangements, I know he would appreciate that, as well as myself. His e-mail is shown in the letter from Camp Wesley Pines, and if any of you would like his phone number, please contact me...I do not want to publish that on the internet. I will sign off now, and hope that you all have the best holidays ever. My love and prayers are with you all, and I look forward to hearing your comments or suggestions about the 2001 reunion, and for this newsletter. Tell me what you'd like to see....
