History of Tompkins, Schuyler, Chemung, Tioga 1879  Chemung County Section

The pioneers who resided in "New Town," now Elmira, in 1794.  Among the names is Peter Barlow

There were a number of early settlers in this locality. As far back as 1816 there were two log houses built within the present limits of Breesport. One was on land now forming the front yard of the house of Joseph Rodbourn.

James Hartgrosee, a British soldier captured by our forces at Saratoga and refusing to be exchanged, came to this locality and was living in a log house here in 1818. Jonathan Schoonover was another old settler. He died in 1808 at the age of eighty- three years.

Other old settlers were Benjamin Smith, A. Schoonover, Israel Boyer, Silas Breese, David, Joel, and Israel Heller. One by the name of Barlow located at the west end of what is now the village in 1818. Ulysses and William R. Breese are the sons of the Silas Breese named. The Heller family came in 1828 and built the first saw-mill in 1830 in the vicinity of the present village.

We take this to be a "wholesale" marriage ceremony

Cyrus Barlow & Mary Jane Granger    Amzi McConnell & Hannah Fitzsimmons   Hiram VanDuzer & Martha Fitzsimmons

We are informed that none of the parties were aware of the day and time each were to be united in the holy bonds of wedlock. But they had a cordial time all round when the "knots" were tied. The brides, no doubt managed the delicate preliminary arrangements, in which their lords were to be "introduced" to the occasion. Such a trio of matrimonial unities are seldom witnessed

Mrs. Frances Donalds, formerly of Horseheads, died Saturday, June 19, 1937, at 7 p.m. at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Mrs. Donalds fractured a shoulder in a fall June 10 & was a patient at that hospital from that time until her death. She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Donalds was the widow of Archie Donalds and lived most of her life in Horseheads. About a year ago she moved to Sayre (Bradford Co Pennsylvania) to live with her brother, Louis Barlow, 105 N. Elmer Ave., Sayre.

The body was removed to the VanBuskirk funeral home, Horseheads, where the funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Harry Malick will officiate, with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery.

The Story of a Breesport Girl's Unfortunate Marriage

Miss Carrie Barlow, of Breesport, New York, and Lewis H. Mills, of Athens, Pennsylvania, were married the 17th of May, 1884, and lived together in more or less happiness and peace for a few months. A child was born and Mrs. Mills returned to her parents’ home at Breesport and commenced an action against her husband who is a railroad man, for divorce on the grounds of his unfaithfulness to his marriage vows.

M.V.B. Bachman, of Horseheads, conducted the case for her and William F. Warner of Waverly, represented the defendant. Judge Murray appointed the Hon. John T. Davidson referee to take testimony in the case and render an opinion to the court. Much evidence was secured and the referee returned his opinion to Judge Murray that the divorce should be granted as prayed for and it was so ordered by his honor.

The lady who brought the action is at her former home in Breesport and is said to be lying at the point of death with consumption. She is very highly spoken of by all who know her and is receiving the sympathy of all who are conversant with her sad history. It is stated that she is a young lady of many winning qualities and she is very highly regarded at her home.

We herewith append a list of the attorneys who have resided in the territory now comprised within the limits of Chemung County, and the dates of their admission to the Common Pleas Courts of Tioga or Chemung, or their first appearance before the courts in the prosecution of causes. It has been revised by the oldest practicing attorney in the county and it is hoped that it will be found substantially correct. The dates after 1846 may vary some from the true date of admission to the bar of the courts of the county, but it is believed they will not materially.
