My elusive Lydia BARLOW (b abt 1784) and husband Ransom
ODELL (b. abt 1780) named a son "Nelson" and
the name was carried down every generation as far
as my generation either in the form "Nellie" or "Nelson." It
must have been a family name to have been so important. I
figure the name was a BARLOW name since I haven't
found any "Nellies" or "Nelsons" among
any other ODELL lines other than this one.
I don't know precisely where my Lydia and Ransom were
born. The census gives New Hampshire as Lydia's birthplace
and New York for Ransom. I think Ransom was probably
born either in the Oblong area that was disputed by Connecticut
and New York (area east of the Hudson River) or else up
around the Glens Falls-Lake George area near the VT border. In
the time period of Lydia's birth the area that became Vermont
was being claimed by New York and New Hampshire so when
she said she was born in New Hampshire, it might not be
the New Hampshire we think of today.
I know I'm grasping at straws, but these folks have
stumped researchers for many years.
They didn't leave a paper trail. Lydia and Ransom
had several children born in NY in the 1805-1814
time period before moving to Scioto Co Ohio where the first "Nelson" - my
gg grandfather - was born in 1818. The names of those
New York- born children include some very
common BARLOW given names - Thomas (the eldest child) and
Moses (the 2nd son). There was also Mary, Melinda,
Chauncey, Benajah (an Odell name), and James. |
| In reply to my request for information about the founding
of The Barlow School of Amenia, Duchess Co New York,
I received the following:
Juan M. Cordova March 2001, Webmaster, Barlow
School Amenia New York
The Barlow School in Amenia, Dutchess Co New York, went
out of business in 1980. For this reason it is hard
to get much in the way of material or information about
the school.
I *can* tell you, from personal knowledge that the school
was founded by Coral Armin Barlow as was another school
in Amenia which, if memory serves, is called The Maplebrook
School.
Coral A. Barlow, who was known as "Sunny" lived
from 1881 to 1956 as is written on a plaque which as far
as I know, still remains on the former
campus of The Barlow School. The campus is now
occupied by The Kildonan School which has no connection
to the former Barlow School.
I maintain a website for the alumni and former faculty
and staff of The Barlow School and bear a responsibility to them regarding
the privacy of the site and the material, including photos,
it contains. I cannot, therefore, offer to share that
material with you or grant you access to the site. But
if you would like to address a message or letter to them
I would be glad to forward it to the community. Alternatively,
I could ask them for you. I don't imagine
there will be any objection but feel obligated to consult
with them first. |

I am searching to connect my Barlow family. I have
a Benjamin b.1773-8
probably in Dutchess County. Not
sure of wife. Children could be Abijah, James, Lavina b.
1816.
They seemed to have settled in Greene County area. There
was a George too; he may have been a son or father to Lavina.
Lavina married George Duncan in 1830's and had 10 children:
~Benjamin ~ George Jr. ~ John ~ Eliza ~ James
~ Lucretia ~ William ~ Charles ~ Charlotte ~ Ida ~
all born between 1836-1859 in Greene County, mostly Cairo
~
Does anyone have a father/mother/wife for my Benjamin
Barlow. Would appreciate any help. |

Hiram W. Barlow was born 28 September 1820 and was from
St. Lawrence Co in New York, possibly Platsburgh. His
mother and father were Noah Barlow and Mary 'Demsey'? Adams.
He served in two wars. One at age 19 that has very little
information called the 'Patriot War'. Candian historians
helped find that. At that time he listed his residence
as St. Lawrence Co New York. At age 43, he enlisted
in the Civil War while a resident of Oswego.
Does anyone have more information on Hiram or his family? |

I am trying to find clues as to who
Nathan BARLOW is. I went back into the
Barlow archives and saw a number of posts from 1998
on for men of this name, but I couldn't be sure
that they were the same as the one I'm after.
As I was looking for information on Joseph MILLER and
his wife Lydia STOWE, from families living in Middletown
Connecticut and ending up in Granville Massachusetts but
somehow living in Lee Center, New York on the way, I found
the web page for Lee Oneida Co New York, which had a nice
little history of the town. This stood out:
"Also in 1790 came Deacon Nathan BARLOW
and his wife and her sons, Smith, Eliakim, Dan and
Luther MILLER."
Further down the page: "Some early members
of this church were Deacon Nathan BARLOW and his wife Lydia."
What intrigues here is that the family I'm trying to trace, Joseph
Miller and Lydia Stowe, had the following sons: Joseph
- b. 1755, Jesse - b.1757, Smith - b. 1763, Eliakim
- b.1764, Dan - b.1770, and Luther - b. 1771. These
are not usual names, and it just doesn't seem possible
that the article about Lee, New York isn't referring to
this family.
Nowhere, however, can I find any indication of a Deacon
Nathan BARLOW who married a widow Lydia 'Stowe'
MILLER. Is this a red herring, or is it a nice
little clue that never came out before?
I'd be most interested in corresponding with
anyone working on a Nathan BARLOW who may have been born in Middletown, Connecticut, where Joseph Miller
and his wife came from and are well documented in the Barbour
Collection.
March 2001 Update: Kent, has
answered Mary's question, and she has verified the following
information:
Descendants of Nathan Barlow

.. +Lydia Stowe b: 06 December 1733 in Middletown,
Middlesex, Connecticut
d: 26 Mar 1826 in Lee Center, Oneida, New York
m: Bef. 1790 in Granville, Hampden, Massachusetts
Lydia Stowe Miller was the third wife of Nathan
Barlow who died in Oneida Co NY. When she married Nathan
in Granville she had four sons Smith, Eliakim, Dan
and Luther Miller who moved to Granville with Nathan
and Lydia. If Lydia had any daughters I don't
know about them.
The names of Nathan's children by his first wife:
Martha Gates are, Ebenezer, Abner, Anne Olive, Heman Gates,
and Nathan.
With his second wife Margaret Purchase he had Jonathan
and Margaret.
Mary tells me she is no longer actively researching the
Barlow name, therefore the information is posted here as
information only. |

I have just returned from a visit to Lee Center and other
points in Oneida Co New York. Nathan Barlow was
born on 26 March 1726 in Suffield, Connecticut, the
son of James Barlow and Martha Gates.
The James Barlow family moved from Suffield to Granville,
Massachusetts prior to 1746, where they
became one of the founding families of Granville. Nathan's
first two wives, Martha Gates and Margaret Purchase
died after bearing him a total of 8 children. Nathan
then married the widow Lydia Stow - her husband Joseph
Miller died 31 January 1785 in Granville- after Margaret's
death in October 1791 in Granville.
Nathan died 17 January 1812 in Lee and is buried
in Evergreen Cemetery, in the town of Lee. Lydia
died 26 March 1825, aged 92 and is buried next to Nathan
in Evergreen Cemetery. Nathan's stone, although broken
is very legible while Lydia's stone is nearly illegible. |

My line to James Barlow of Suffield, Connecticut is as
follows: Jewett Dunton Barlow 8, Jewett Roger Barlow
7, Truman Priestly Barlow 6, Benjamin D. Barlow 5, Benjamin
Barlow Jr. 4, Benjamin Barlow 3, James Barlow Jr.
2, James Barlow 1
I have spent most of my time investigating the descendants
of Benjamin Barlow.
I have compiled, with the help of many people, a good
amount of information on the ten children of Benjamin Barlow,
the ten children of Benjamin Barlow Jr., and from
there, my descent from Benjamin D. Barlow.
Major interests I have include learning more about
Ebenezer Barlow - lineage Nathan, James Jr.- and
his son, Ebenezer Rowland Barlow. We know Ebenezer settled in
Oneida County New York but vital statistics are almost
non-existant and we don't know who Ebenezer married.
Ebenezer Rolin Barlow is equally mysterious. I would like
to know more about Ebenezer and Ebenezer Rolin Barlow.
There are several good researchers out there
on the descendants of James Barlow and perhaps they,
and myself, will be able to add more details to the whole
story.

Looking for anyone with information on these families. Thanks

Royal BARLOW was 1846, in Illinois, according to census
... possibly listed as Robert, married to a Kelsey. I
found him in Richardson County Nebraska census of 1860,
with mom Naomi and
step-dad, John Martin Loope who she married November 24,
1853 - in Dodge Co Wisconsin.
In the 1870 Richardson County Nebraska census Royal is
found with his mom nearby, and a he has a son, Arthur
BARLOW - born January 1870.
I am looking for his fathers name and his mother's maiden
name. I believe he has a sister: Ceralda/ Sarilda
C. BARLOW born 1837, possibly in New York and died 1892,
possibly in Oklahoma.
Also from Mike August 1999
Looking for the parents of Sarilda / Ceralda
C. BARLOW who married Alonzo Penuel BACON in Wisconsin
or Nebraska about 1860. She was born in
New York about 1835 and has a brother, Royal Herman BARLOW
born about 1846 in Illinois. Both claim their parents
birth as Vermont - I'd imagine about 1810 or so.
I believe the mother was Naomi, but don't have her surname
or the fathers name. They may have a sister named
Prescilla, but I haven't anything concrete, just a reference.
Royal named a son Jirah, but I haven't been able
to connect these two to the Jirah BARLOW out of Vermont,
or any of his siblings. Has anyone come across, Royal,
Sarilda or Naomi?

I’m looking for information on Ruth
Pace, John Joseph Pace
Barlow-Whitecloud, we think he was b. before Ruth married
Billy Whitecloud, and Billie Ruth Barlow Whitecloud. Billie
Ruth lived at the Ashley Hotel, in Manhattan, New York
City, married to William Moncrief in the 1950’s.
The family lost track of her there. Rumor has it,
she was gunned down in a gang battle between 1958 - 1965. I
have no proof of this today.
Her maiden name is BARLOW-WHITE CLOUD. She married
Horace BLACKSTOCK of Mobile, Alabama in 1942
living in the Dr. Parish Bed & Meal House in Midland,
Alabama, then left him in 1944 to go to New York.
She changed her name to "GAIL" Blackstock
or Moncrief. She was an entertainer, singing in Nightclub’s
in New York during this time. She is originally from
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she was born on February
23, 1925.
Her mother was Ruth Pace married to Dr. Billy B. Barlow-White
Cloud, an Indian Medicine Man. Ruth Pace Barlow died
in 1932 in Philadelphia, Mississippi on the Choctaw Reservation.
Billie Ruth and her 1/2 brother, John Joseph "Jack" Barlow
were placed in the St. Mary Orphanage in Nashville Tennessee
from 1936 - 1941.
I have been unable to trace her whereabouts. They
had a cousin by the name of Mary Verlee
Dunn, who lived across the street from them in Hattiesburg,
as children, but I can’t find anything on her either.
If anyone out there knows how I can do this,
or knows anything about this, please e-mail me or call 717

I am still hunting the parents of Frederick P. Barlow. I
believe that he was the grandson of the Revolutionary War
soldier John Barlow of Kent, Connecticut. His father
could be John Barlow, or Elisha Barlow, or Heman Barlow,
or Julius Caswell Barlow.
I find Frederick in Portage Co Ohio, married to Sally
Derthick on 26 February 1845.
Also in or passing through Portage Co in the same time
frame was Julius, Heman, Fanny, Joseph W., William, Alfred

I also have a record of a Frederick Barlow, who was admitted
to the Baptist Church in Wyoming Co NY, in 1842, on

My Barlow tree is as follows: Mother -
Doris Louise Barlow Had three sisters: Paula
Elaine Barlow, Susan Lynn Barlow, Alma Marion Barlow ~ she has
dropped her middle name of Marion since her marriage
and uses "Barlow" as her middle
name. All were born on Long Island, New York
Their parents were: Hanford Lester Barlow b:
September 9,
1910 -
d: December 10, 1963 Jamaica Queens and Alma Katherine
Stehr. Hanford's parents were Abraham Lincoln Barlow b:
August 4, 1865 d: August 7, 1950 Jamaica
Queens and Josephine Richard Reynolds b: c 1865 in
Cheriton, Virginia.
A note from the above mentioned "Alma Barlow
Nielsen" aka: Alma Marion Barlow:
Abraham Lincoln Barlow had 3 brothers, Joshua and Daniel, who
are buried in Grace Episcopal Church in Jamaica, Queens,
New York, Edward and a sister named Elizabeth, "Bessie" . Also
buried in the same cemetery in Queens is my great-grandfather, Henry
Barlow who died in 1884, and his wife Anna Elizabeth Pettit.
That is where my history ends currently.
What I am looking for is a link to General Francis
Barlow (Union
American Civil War). A cousin of Hanford trace the
family history and stated that Francis Barlow was an
Uncle of Abraham Lincoln Barlow but he died before he
passed on the family history. There are also rumours
of a Barlow in my past who was an aide-de-camp to General
Washington.
Here is what I know about General Barlow.
Francis had two brothers, Edward and ______- please help.
There is no further information on what happened to the
brothers.
Francis had two wives:
1. Arabella Wharton Griffin whom he married in Somerville
New Jersey and who died during Civil War
2. Ellen Shaw of Massachusetts
No mention of children
Francis is buried in Brookline Massachusetts
but I cannot find out the name of the cemetery. Francis'
parents were Almira Penniman of Massachusetts and David
Hatch Barlow of Vermont. Francis's father was a minister
in the First Unitarian Church of Brooklyn New York
Francis left the family while the boys were young. Francis
never saw his father again but a Harvard classmate found
in Pennsylvania in 1864. Francis' father was murdered somewhere
in Pennsylvania, c 1864 before he could contact him.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also it is written in the Warrior General book that Francis
was a relative of the artist Winslow Homer. I
am also trying to find the link to Winslow. There is a
picture of Francis
Barlow by Winslow Homer in The
Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Also there
is a statue of him on Barlow's Knoll in
Gettysburg Pennsylvania.
We thought that Henry was the brother of Civil War General
Francis Channing Barlow but since "Edson Barlow" sent
us information saying that Henry Barlow died in 1857--we're
trying to find out the relationship of our Henry Barlow
to the Henry Barlow who was the brother of General Francis
Channing Barlow
Francis C. Barlow, was the Attorney General
of NY that prosecuted the "TWEED Gang." He
was captured at Gettysburg but exchanged after he had heard
some of the CSA battle plans. He is also in the Homer
Winslow painting "Prisoners
from the Front"
Much of the information shown above comes from the book "Warrior
Generals--Combat Leadership in the Civil War" by Thomas

I was talking to my grandmother about our family and she
brought up a Mary Alice Ransom Barlow. It just so
happens that I found on your web site Ransom
BARLOW. What I want to know is if any of the information
given to me is correct. I was told that Mary Alice
Ransom Barlow was Cherokee Indian and was married to a
man from NY.
However, her husband had to go back to NY and because
she was Indian she was not allowed to go. But he
left her some land, where I don't know. Anyway, after
her husband was gone she met John Wesley Tyer. They
married and lived in Arkansas. Later
moved to Redmond, Oklahoma, then moved to Jenks, Oklahoma.
They had children; John Wesley Jr., Spencer, Charles,
Kristin, and Ione.
John Wesley Jr. is my great grandfather; he married Nora
Mae Brown and had children; Elmer, Matthew (my grandfather),
and Margaret.
If anyone has information about this family, please email
me. I would ask the descendants myself, but they have
all died, and the children do not know. Thanks.... |

At one time I was corresponding with a lady who was researching
Samuel. He did go to St. Louis. It is possible he
is related to my Warren Barlow, Sr. who married Anna Gillett.
Their son Warren married Anna Page Pomeroy. I am descended

My Barlows came from Yorkshire, England
to New Brunswick to New York and finally settled in Wisconsin. I
am looking for information on Barlows, specifically my
3rd great grandfather, George Barlow who was born in New
York in 1813. He married Louisa Briggs who was born
in 1835 in Pennsylvania. They
settled in Yankeetown, Crawford County, Wisconsin where
they are buried.
Any information or leads on which city or county in New
York he was from would be appreciated. |

George W. Barlow; born August 17, 1819 in New York; died
August 8, 1888 in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. His first
wife was Lucinda Purrington born September 7, 1824 and
died November 8, 1849. They were married June
3, 1848. They had one child named George H. Barlow; born
June 27, 1849. I have nothing more on George H. Barlow.
I do know that he lived in Wisconsin though, and he was
a half brother to Norman. After Lucinda died George
W. married Louisa Rice, on May 9, 1856.
On the 1870 Wisconsin census for Crawford County it shows
a George Barlow (born in New York) age 21 with a Sarah
age 15 (born in Indiana). I'm not sure if it is same George
H. Barlow.
My George H. Barlow was married to a Susie
Simpson and had a daughter, Laura E. Barlow born in Wisconsin
but I am not sure if my family fits the above family yet. Thanks
for anything! |

I am researching the following families: BARLOW, CLOUDEN,
MURPHY, Whalen, STEVENS, Bamberg, Massetta, Noon, MUZZY,
Duschen, McCann, Shaw, DAILY, Kaufman, Bickleman, JEWETT,
NYE, WIETT, Foster, WING, Burgess, Basset, STETSON, Tupper,
Gator, Worden, TEVINGTON, Roberts, Mackrell, Luffe, Driscoll,
Green, ROSEN.
The names in capitals are the family names directly associated
with the Barlow family. I have completed some research
on all of the families. I traced the Barlow line back to
George Barlow (d 1684 in Sandwich Ma) through his son Moses
(abt 1654 - abt 1742).
George may have been the first of this line or he may
have been the son of George Barlow (d abt 1653 in Maine).
The family moved to Barnard Vermont in the late 1700s. From
there they migrated to Covington NY (abt 1820).
Some members of the family still reside there while others
moved to the Western New York (Buffalo) area |

Looking for Mary Jane Barlow born October
15, 1855 and died August 28, 1885 of consumption in the
home of William McOwen, 220 Fifth Ave in Joliet. She
married William Purdy Barnes, on October 20, 1875 in Joliet
Will Co Illinois. The
marriage license says she was from Joliet. William
was born July 03, 1852 and died August 1878. They had a
son, Jesse Frank Barnes, born to them in 1876 in Joliet,
Illinois.
Jesse was 9 when last parent died. He was raised
by his paternal grandparents, Matthew and Mary Jane "Purdy" Barnes
of Joliet. He went to Silver Creek Nebraska about
1890 with his Aunt Ermina who married Frank Bump of Joliet. He
later lived in Montana.
The Barnes family in Joliet moved there from Haverstraw,
Rockland County, New York , so it may be that Mary Janes
family followed a similar route.
I looked for Mary Jane Barlow in the Will County census
of 1870 but so many of the pages of the census were simply
unreadable - she and her family may be there but with over
a third of the census washed and bleached and hung to dry....Can
anyone shed light to the parentage or siblings of Mary
Jane Barlow? |

RACHEL BARLOW (born about 17 March 1795 at Cobleskill,
Schoharie Co New York) married 1814 at Monteville, Montgomery
Co New York [this town of Monteville seems to be a point
of uncertainty], William Swift (supposedly born 01 August
1789 in the "Cape Cod area").
They were in Schoharie Co in the 1820 census, but removed
to Waterford Village, Plymouth Township, Wayne Co in 1835-6
(source : Hawkins and DeVries Barlow Genealogy via Edson
BARLOW email)
William appears in Plymouth, Michigan in 1840 federal
census, and died 16 November 1848 at Waterford, Plymouth
Twp., Wayne Co Michigan.
Rachel died 14 May 1874 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co Michigan.
Rachel's descent seems to go back to the SE Massachusetts
Barlows:
In email from Kathryn Graham 16 April 97, she
writes from the Barlow Genealogy page 63:
"2251 RACHEL BARLOW (Nathan 5, Aaron 4, Moses 3,
Aaron Barlow married Beulah 2 Wing, Daniel 1)"
William and Rachel had seven kids (that I know of), all
born in NY:
Franklin Swift, born November 10, 1815, an infant who
died young (probably Angeline the first, based on family
notes), Lucy Swift, married Thomas Slocum (Edson's email,
family notes), Angeline Swift born about 1825, William
Henry Swift, Mary Swift, Bolivar Swift born about 1830
I'm descended from Franklin's third marriage, 1854 at
Ypsilanti, Michigan, to Laura Elizabeth Phillips. I
haven't been able to trace the other siblings.
The Barlow background seems to be worked out pretty well
by Hawkins & DeVries, though it sounds like Edson is
untangling some remaining questions.
Originally, I got put on William Swift's trail by a DAR
application by one of Franklin's grand- daughters by his
first marriage. This DAR application claimed William
(1789) was the son of Captain Ward Swift and Remember Tobey
in Sandwich, Massachusetts. But I've found on closer
scrutiny that there are several terrible inconsistencies
with that idea, such as Remember being about 54 when she
supposedly gave birth, GH Swift's genealogy's direct statement
that Ward and Remember's last son was Alv(a/i)n, born about
1783, etc. So, I'm stepping back and taking another,
broader, look at SE Massachusetts.
Laura Elizabeth Phillips is another puzzle, but that's
*another* story...
My questions:
* I have some conflicting sources for their marriage place:
There doesn't appear to be a Monteville, Montgomery Co,
though there are several in other NY counties. In one
handwritten source (a DAR application) it looks like "Montevillo",
though I'm not sure that helps. I'd like confirmation
of their marriage place.
* William is a brick wall for me right now. He is the
needle in the haystack of SE Massachusetts William
Swift's. Who were his parents, and where was he born?
* I'm renewing my efforts to find descendants of Franklin's
siblings, in the hopes of comparing notes with distant
cousins. This method has been fruitful with some of
Franklin's other descendants, but I think I've exhausted
those avenues. Are there any other Barlow-Swift descendants
who passed through Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1840-1860s?
* I'm also interested in corresponding with anyone working
on this line of Barlows.
