Notes and Queries for Barlow Families with links to North Carolina
Mark W. Smith November 2002
I am trying to identify the Barlows who married into the Council family in Robeson Co NC around
1800. My GGG Grandfather, Michael Council, married a female Barlow within a year or two of 1800,
presumably in Robeson County. Their oldest child, Soloman Barlow Council, was born in Robeson
County in 1803, so they definitely married before 1803. Michael Council was born in 1776 in Ash
County, NC and moved to Robeson County in the late 1700s. I have a description of the Barlow
family that Michael Council married into. The description was written by one of Michael Council's
sons. It is as follows:"My grandfather on my mother's side was named Barlow. No doubt he was of English descent. He
married a lady by the name of Ikenon whose parents came from the Rhine and probably were of
German descent. My grandmother on this side died when they had but two children, my mother
being the eldest and quite young. My grandmother died of a form of dysentery. The Barlows were a
low heavy-set hardy and industrious people. At least this was the character of my grandfather.
Unfortunately he was addicted to drinking too much. He married again not long after my
grandmother died and brought a step-mother into the family who tyrannized over my mother to such
an extent that I have no doubt it led her to marry my father.""I shall not undertake to give history of my grandfather Barlow as I have never known where he came
from, nor have I any clue to his ancestors. He was a man of some property and owned a great deal
of land in this section of the country as well as slaves. By his last wife he had six children. He gave
my mother a plantation when she married which was fully one-half covered by swamps and ponds.
If there had been only one pond or one swamp it would have been more tolerable. This land was
most difficult to clear and it was there my parents undertook life seemingly without forethought to
rear their children who made their appearance rapidly until they numbered ten."This is all of the info I have on the Barlows in question. Does it match up with anything you know
about the Robeson County Barlows? Could it possibly be Marsh Barlow? Any help would be very
gratefully appreciated.

I am researching the line of John -b. 1778- and Abigail HOBBS Coffin to John -b. 1824- and Martha
Delphina Coffin to Benjamin -b. 1863- and Eliza HORNER Coffin.
This family moved from North Carolina to Indiana and Iowa. Most of my sources have come from
Quaker records. In trying to locate the siblings of Benjamin Franklin Coffin, I discovered Louisa Jane Coffin -b. 1852
- married Edward N. Barlow -b. 1848- from a family history sheet.Benjamin's siblings were:
Abigail Sophrona Cora M. John M. Louisa Jane Matilda Caroline Thomas Newton Ellen
Can anyone help to figure out what family Edward N. Barlow comes from?

My gr-grandfather, Daniel Barlow, was the son of Alfred Barlow and Martha Gilbert. He is listed in
the 1880 census of Lincoln Co Arkansas, at age 19, living with his parents. It shows him to be born
in Tennessee, and Alfred, born in North Carolina is of the Wilkes Co bunch.Other children of Alfred and Martha are John and Martha, both born in Arkansas.
Daniel married Rosanna Carnley/Conley in Lincoln Co Arkansas on September 21, 1884 or 1885.
Their children include:
John Selma Georgia Ann Austin Samuel Emmett....aka Emmett
John is my grandfather, he was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in the 1890's.
Rosanna is said to be born in Lincoln Co Arkansas, but I am told court records as well as the federal
census for 1900 were burned. Rosanna wound up in Washington, and then Oregon, and is shown to
be married to a Thompson. What happened to Daniel is not known. Did they divorce, did Daniel
die? I have put out several queries, but Daniel seems to be a lost sheep.........see also:Ancestors & Descendants of Daniel Barlow,

Barlow with wives and daughters as same name in census listing. I do know that the Shady Grove
Barlow is my ancestor, but, because there is no age given for the Wiley Barlow marriage record, I
can only assume at this point that he is Fannie Virginia Barlow's father.

Brunswick Co Virginia - then to Wake Co North Carolina then to Edgefield District South Carolina -

Tennessee and married Elizabeth Gibson in 1834. They moved to Newton County, Missouri about
1839.The father of Alfred Hirton Barlow is believed to be John Barlow of Wilkes Co North Carolina.
------ note from researcher of Wilkes Co ---- No evidence that Alfred Hirton Barlow is a son of either John Barlow, but John Barlow Jr does have an
unidentified son born about 1814, died 1820-30 -- unless we're wrong about him dying.

According to material from Reba Mathis, the Barlow family can be traced back to Thomas Barlow.
Thomas Barlow was born about 1760, probably in Scotland. He came to America before the Revolu-
tionary War. He married Elizabeth Nicholas who was born in 1787. A son of Thomas and Elizabeth,
John Nicholas Barlow, born 1797 in North Carolina or in 1797-1798 in Virginia. He was listed in the
1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census in Illinois. He was living in Bond County during the 1850's and
1860's. He died February 8, 1870 in Montgomery Co Illinois. He married Anna Burk on April 13, 1828.

I am trying to find more information on John Barlow who came from NC (or sometimes said VA) to
Hardin Co Tennessee by 1850. His age is given as age 65 in both 1850 and 1860. He does not
appear in 1870 that I can determine. He and a woman named Elvira, (assumed to be wife, age also
varies) have children (or probably some are grandchildren -- relationships are not stated until 1880
census)1. Nancy b. ca 1828 Tennessee
2. Charles P. b. ca 1838 Tennessee
3. Martha A. b. ca 1840 Tennessee
4. John S. b. ca 1843
5. Jasper N. b. ca 1844
6. Willy H. b. 1847
7. Elvira b. 1849
8. Elizabeth J. b. ca 1849
9. Frances M. b. 1851
10. William W. b. 1860Osburns live nearby with Barlows living with them....possibly Elvira is an Osburn. Also Greens and
Campbells from NC live nearby...thus making me think they would have come from the mountainous
area of NC, possibly from the Wilkes Co Barlows. However, the common name of John and the
varying ages both he and Elvira reports have created problems!Son Charles P. married Eliza Barlow in 1858 in Lawrence Co Tennessee and he served in Co D 19th
TN Cav CSA...no pension applied for as both he and spouse died too early--he died in 1874 in Hardin
Co.They apparently only had two children, Elvira and John Wesley, who married Sara Hughling / Huling
and she died in Dyer Co Tennessee. John Wesley eventually ended up in Dunklin Co Missouri with
second wife.Any connections to this family that might help unravel the John Barlow with wife Elvira mystery will
be greatly appreciated.
Would appreciated any information regarding Elias Barlow, his wife Nancy Herring, their son
Lachlan Neil Barlow and his wife Elizabeth Oliver. They lived in the part of Old Montgomery Co that
is now Wheeler County. Elias and Nancy were married in 1825 in Cumberland Co NC. Lachlan
Neil was born in Montgomery Co and married Elizabeth Oliver in about 1848. He was killed in the
Civil War. Any information regard Eliza's parentage or her children would be appreciated.
