The Primitive Methodist Church was organized at the old Second Street school house. Among the leading early members were George Harvey, Moses Harvey, Thomas M. Thomas, David Harris, John Green, Josiah Bough, and William Flew.

The present church edifice, a brick structure on the east side of Market street, was erected in 1872 and dedicated in 1873.

Services were first regularly conducted by James Stoney, a local preacher; the succession of pastors has been as follows: Reverends John H. Acornley, Daniel Savage, Charles Miles, Benjamin Whillock, John A. James, Stephen Hancock, Samuel Penglase, John Mason, W. H. Acornley, and John P. Barlow.

A commodious parsonage adjacent to the church building was erected in 1887.
