Veronica   November 2007

My name is Veronica.    My mother's maiden name is Barlow.    She grew up as Barbara Anne Barlow in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.    Her mother, Mildred Barlow, had a father named John.   He had a brother, William, I believe.

My mother's father was Joseph Santore, (mafia-related), and Mildred never married him and took my mother away to another location, so as not to be associated with Joe Santore, who was murdered in the streets of Philadelphia when my mother was 2 years old. Charles Santore (Joe's brother), founded the Union there and there is a library in his name, and Charles Santore, his son, illustrates famous children's books.   Don't know if there is any connection.    My mom was born in 1938.    Just thought you'd be interested.    I've been doing a little research here and there.    I love learning about my family.

My mother is a descendant of Martha Margaret Barlow, daughter of Joseph Barlow and Martha Wright. Martha Margaret Barlow married Henry Arthur Whiteside in May 1835.  Their son Henry, born May 1839, was my great grandfather. We have the branch of the family tree of our side, but would like more information, if you have it on Joseph's brothers, sisters, and parents history.

The Barlow's came from Pennsylvania, and moved to New Brunswick during or after the Revolutionary War as Loyalists around 1783. Originally from England. Joseph Barlow's father was Ezekial Barlow, who settled in Pennsylvania prior to the Revolution, and also went as a Loyalist to New Brunswick. Joseph's wife -Martha, born 1769- and her parents'  (William and Hannah Wright) also were Loyalists in St. John, New Brunswick, but I don't know where they originated from. My great grandparents moved from New Brunswick to Alberta (around Penhold and Stettler area.)  Joseph's daughter Martha Margaret was born in 1806, and married my great grandfather Henry Arthur Whiteside (born in Lancaster, England in 1807), married May 28, 1835.

The Whiteside/Cody great great grandparents (Henry Arthur's parents') came from England to New Brunswick after the Revolution, and moved back to England between 1805 and 1822, then returned to New Brunswick. Joseph's (born 1761 or 1762) brothers and sisters were William, Elizabeth, Mary, Maria Grace, Catherine, Thomas, Anne, Joseph, and Sophia Jane. These are the branches I am interested in.

Lucius BARLOW b. about 1791 CT>PA c1812

Looking for the connection of Lucius Barlow b. c 1791 to the Connecticut Barlows. 1850 census Tioga Co listed his birthplace as CT. I believe that he migrated to Charleston Twp about age 21 or 1812 or so. His wife Mary Ann was born in NY c1801. They had at least 10 children one of whom was my g grandmother Louisa (Lovisa) Barlow born c1836 in Tioga Co. Charleston Twp. She married Robert Douglas Tipple in 1859. Found him! Lucius BARLOW was the son of Samuel Barlow. b.1748 in Stratford, Fairfield Co d 1835 in Delaware Co NY. This is from his petition for a Rev. War Pension. Information mostly supplied by his daughter Ann Bloomer in 1832. Conflict noted with a bio on this site of Pierre Barlow Cornwall whose mother Theodotia Barlow was one of the 9 surviving children in 1835 along with Lucius, Charles, George S., James Harvey, John, Ann Bloomer, Grace Burr, Phidema Hogadoom.

Conflict: Site says that Samuel BARLOW was born in England and moved here in 1770s with several brothers. One of these is incorrect. The link between Theodotia, Anne and Lucius is sure... Does anyone know where their father Samuel came from???  And when??

It is *possible* that Esther may be the Esther who is a daughter of Thomas and Anna Barlow who lived someplace in Lancashire at that time and had about 10 children, one of whom is Esther. I do not have the town, birth, marriage, or death dates. Most of this family immigrated   to NY and PA about 1844. The first child was Jehu born in 1807 and possibly the last was Richard in 1839. I have no birth dates or anything else for Esther. Do you have *any* additional information on Esther, her parents, etc.? I'm stuck on her parents; there are just too many Thomas and Anna Barlow's at that time.

I have found another Joseph Barlow on Lumberland, Sullivan Co NY 1820 and 1830 census.    This Joseph would have been born 1790-94.   I also have a burial for John H. Barlow whose father was Joseph Barlow married Mary Arstrong.  This John and my Joseph, would fit in age groups on census as brothers.   Looking for anyone with information on these families.    Thanks for your help.

I am stuck on a Smith BARLOW born ca 1818 in NY - per later Pennsylvania census records.   I hope someone can tell me more about him. Here's what I know:

Smith BARLOW of Meshoppen, Wyoming Co Pennsylvania was born ca 1818 in New York
married c 1845 "Susan", maiden name unknown.
I don't know when or where they married, but their first child was born 1846.  By the 1850 Meshoppen Wyoming Co. PA census, Smith and Susan BARLOW had 3 children:

1. Sarah b. 1846      2. Warren b. 1848     3. Charles b. 1850.

By the 1860 Meshoppen PA census they had added 2 more children:

4. Harriet b. 1851      5. Rhoda b. 1854

In April 1860 Smith and Susan BARLOW sold their Meshoppen land.   They are on the 1870 census and in 1872 Smith and Susan BARLOW sold property, this time in Washington, Wyoming Co. PA. This 1872 land sale is the last record I have for Susan.

On the 1880 census is found Smith BARLOW, 63, born NY with wife "Emily" age 51, born PA; son Nelson, 12 born PA and CRANDALL, Etta 15, born PA, no relationship listed, doing "housework".

Any info on Smith BARLOW and his family would be appreciated. My husband descends from child #4. Harriet BARLOW B. ca 1851 in Meshoppen who married Gershom WINANS.

I have very little on the Barlow family, because the family was broken up into orphanges during WWII. However, my husband's name is William Nathan Barlow, Jr., b. in Reading, PA; his father is William Nathan Barlow; his father is Claude or Clyde Barlow. We believe the family was settled in around Binghamton, NY, and it was my husband's father who moved to Reading, PA to work for the railroad. He then moved to Fort Wayne with the railroad but later worked at Dana Corp.

My husband is the eldest of about 13 children. We are in touch with only a few of them, including his half brother William Raymond Barlow, who is a Wesleyan minister in Warren, Indiana. Hubby's mother was Stella Kahl. Her father was an immigrant from the Alsace-Lorraine area, and his family in the "Old Country" settled on the "Kahn" name when the area became stable politically. They had gone back and forth between the two depending on which country was in power.

Alison Barlow
