Bobbie Dunbar's lineage of John M. Barlow
Ann Eliza Green, his first wife, also his second wife,

Bobbie however, shows them to be Shawnee Indians,

Albums of Photographs of Boundary Monuments American Border
Dates 1892 - 1894

   Image:
"Rebuilding Monument 40."   By  D. H.  Payne,  under  the direction of  the U. S. section of the International
Boundary Commission, along the Mexican border west of the Rio Grande, 1892--94.

  Scope & Content
The  boundary between the United  States and Mexico was defined by the  treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
and  subsequently modified by the Gadsen Purchase. The first was concluded  on February 2, 1848 by  Mr.
Nicholas Trist of the U.S. and  Senores B. Couto, M. Atristain and  L. Cuevas of Mexico.   To carry the treaty
into effect,  commissioner Col. Jon Weller  and  surveyor  Andrew Grey  were appointed by the  U.S.  and
General Pedro Conde and Sr. Jose Illarregui were appointed by the  Mexican Government to survey and
set the boundary.   A  subsequent  treaty of  December 30, 1853,  altered  the border  from the initial one
adding 47 more boundary markers to the original six.   Of the 53 markers,  the majority were rude piles of
stones, a  few being of  durable character and providing proper inscriptions.   As  time passed, consider-
able  difficulty  arose  regarding  the exact  location of the  markers  with  both  countries  charging  the
originals had been moved or destroyed. To solve the problem, a convention between the two countries
was  concluded on  Aug. 29, 1882,  with subsequent  reconnaissance  verifying the  necessity  for definite
demarkation of  the boundary.   The  convention  expired  before  the provisions  were carried  out  and
another  was  concluded  to revive the  provisions  on  February 18, 1889.   The commissioners of the U.S.
Section of the International Commission appointed by President Harrison were- John Barlow, Lt. Colonel
Corps of Engineers, David Gaillard, Lt.- Corps of Engineers  and A.T. Mosman of the Coast and Geodetic
Survey.    Charged  with  the  task  of  relocating the monuments  and  marking  the  boundary  line, the
commissioners decided to employ  a survey  photographer to  record  various views of each monument
located and erected by the U.S. Section. Each of the commissioners was  presented with a set of albums
(4 albums- the three in this series and one in 77-OM) at  the conclusion of the survey,  which explains why
this set of albums is located  in  Record Group 77,  Records of  the Office of  the Chief of Engineers rather
than Record Group 76.   The photographs  in this series consist  exclusively of  views of the new boundary
markers from the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean often from various points of view with an occasional
shot of members of the survey -no identifications.
