Later Barlow Immigrants to Rhode Island :  1840 - 1899

In the 1840's the second wave of Barlows began to arrive in Rhode Island.  The first of these were from Ireland and appear to be part of the large Irish immigration that is generally attributed to the potato famine.  Later immigrants came from England, Scotland and Ireland, and many came to work in the rapidly growing textile industry in Rhode Island.

Patrick and Mary Barlow, and their family, came to America around 1844 and settled at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island.  Patrick was born in 1814 and Mary was born in 1817, and they married about 1835, all in Ireland.  Their children were: Henry born about 1839 in Ireland, Catherine born about 1843 in Ireland, Owen born in 1845 at Pawtucket, Frances born in 1847 at Pawtucket, Patrick born in 1850 at Pawtucket, and Mary born in 1852 at Pawtucket.

Patrick and his family were at Pawtucket in 1850, at North Providence in 1860, at Providence in 1870, and at Pawtucket in 1880.  Patrick's first wife died in 1853 and he married Margaret about 1855.  They had one child Joseph born in 1856 at Pawtucket.

 

Alice Barlow, the widow of Arthur Barlow, immigrated with her children from Liverpool to New York City on the Shenanga in 1846.  Her children were Susan born 1827, Arthur born 1829, Henry born 1831, James born 1834 and John born 1836.  Alice was at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses.

Arthur Barlow, Alice's eldest son, died in 1862.  His widow Sarah and their children Alice and John moved to California where they were recorded at Oakland in the 1870 census.  James Barlow, Alice's third son, married Ann McManus in 1859 at Providence and their children were: Henry born in 1860, James born in 1862, Susan born in 1865, Ann born in 1868, Alice born in 1872, John born in 1874 and Ellen born in 1878.

 
Peter Barlow was born in 1831 in Ireland.  He came to America in the 1840's and was at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1850 census.  He married Alice Noonan in 1860 and they had a daughter Mary born in 1862 at Providence.  Peter died in 1868, Alice in 1870 and Mary in 1863, all at Providence.
 
Robert S. Barlow was born 1826 in Scotland.  He came to America in the 1840's and married Lydia, probably in New Hampshire where she was born in 1828.  They were at Scituate, Rhode Island, in the 1860 census and at Providence in the 1870 census.  They had five children but only one was living in 1900:  Harriet L. Barlow was born in 1854 in Rhode Island.
 
John and Ann Barlow were married about 1850 in England.  He was born in 1830 and she in 1833.  They came to America between 1854 and 1859, and settled first at Warwick, Rhode Island.  They were at Providence in the 1870 census.  John and Ann had five children:  Sarah born in 1854 in England, Alice born in 1859 in Rhode Island, Selena born in 1861 in Rhode Island, Mary born in 1865 in Rhode Island and John William born in 1867 in Rhode Island.
 
William P. and Lavinia Barlow were married about 1850 in England.  He was born about 1827 and she in 1826.  They came to America between 1856 and 1859, and settled first at Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island.  They were at Providence in the 1870 census.  William and Lavinia had five children: Monica born in 1852 in England, Elizabeth born in 1854 in England, Sarah born in 1856 in England, Randolph born in 1859 in Rhode Island and Lucy born in 1864 in Rhode Island.
 

John J. Barlow was born in 1846 in England and came to America around 1860.  He married Phebe J. Hill in 1873 and they had four children:  Bertram Sidney born in 1875, James B. born in 1875, Albert A. born in 1880 and Ethel C. born in 1885.  The family was at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1910 census.

 

Patrick Barlow was born in 1834 in Ireland and probably came to Rhode Island about 1850.  He married Bridget Kelley in 1855 at Providence and they had seven children born in Rhode Island:  Mary E. born in 1856, Peter H. born in 1859, Catharine born in 1863, Julia A. born in 1866, Ella F. born in 1868, Charles born in 1871 and Robert E. born in 1874.  The family was at Providence in the 1880 census.

Peter H. Barlow married Elizabeth A. Riley in 1882.  They were at North Providence in the 1910 census and they had six children born in Rhode Island: Peter born in 1884, Catherine born in 1885, Elizabeth born in 1886, Susan born in 1888, Joseph born in 1889 and Ralph born in 1891.

Robert E. Barlow married Emma T. Audet in 1901.  They were at Providence in the 1910 census and they had three children born in Rhode Island: Emma M. born in 1902, Walter J. born in 1903, and Robert W. born in 1905.

 

David and Sarah Barlow were born in 1834 and 1833, respectively, in England.  They married about 1855 in England and came to America about 1858.  They had six children: Elizabeth Taylor born in 1854 in England, William born in 1856 in England, Sarah H. born in 1857 in England, David H. born in 1859 in Rhode Island, John T. born in 1861 in Rhode Island, and Robert born in 1864 in Rhode Island.  The family was at Warwick, Rhode Island, in the 1860 through 1880 censuses.

 

Henry and Mary Barlow married in 1862 in England and came to America in 1864.  He was born in 1840 and she in 1842.  They had two daughters: Eliza born in 1862 in England and Fannie born in 1879 in Rhode Island.  The family was at Johnston, Rhode Island, in the 1880 census.  Eliza married Joshua W. Shepard in 1883 and Fannie married Charles T. Kempton in 1907.

 

William and Mary Barlow were married in 1869 in England and came to America that year.  He was born in 1840 and she in 1844.  They were at Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1880 census and at Providence in the 1900 census.  They had no children.

 

James and Sarah Barlow were born in 1844 and 1843, respectively, in England.  They came to America in 1869 and were at Cumberland, Rhode Island, in the 1870 census.  In the 1880 census they were at Taunton, Massachusetts, and in 1900 they were at New Bedford, Massachusetts.  They had four children:  Rachel born in 1869 in England, James Robert born in 1870 at Providence, Samuel born in 1873 at Johnston, Providence County, and Mary Alice born in 1875 at Johnston.

 

Ratcliffe and Leah Barlow were born in England in 1834 and 1830, respectively, and they married in England.  They had five children: Josiah born in 1854 in England,  Walter born in 1858 in England, Thomas born in 1856 in England, Alsimus born in 1866 in England and Mary J. born in 1871 in Massachusetts.  The family came to Massachusetts in 1870 where Ratcliffe soon died.  The widow Leah Barlow married second Richard Moore in 1879 and they were at Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island, in the 1880 census.

Alsimus Barlow married Annie in 1887 and they had four children born in Rhode Island: Walter R. born in 1889, Elizabeth S. born in 1891, William A. born in 1901 and Harry W. born in 1903.

 

Smith Barlow was born in 1845 in England and came to America in 1871.  In 1874 he married Alice Cuttill and they had three children born in Rhode Island:  Francis born in 1875, Rachel born in 1877 and Smith born in 1882.

 

James Barlow was born in 1855 in Ireland.  He came to America in 1872 and settled first at Dover, New Hampshire.  He married Mary in 1878 probably at Dover.  They were at Dover in the 1880 census and at Woonsocket, Providence County, Rhode Island, in the 1900 census.  They had four children:  John born in 1877 in New Hampshire, Mary born in 1880 in New Hampshire, Catherine born in 1883 in New Hampshire and Bessie born in 1888 in Rhode Island.

 

Henry Barlow was born in 1870 in England.  In 1872 he came to America with his parents.  His father is not known and apparently died before 1880 when his mother Mary and her children Hannah, Sarah, Henry and Calestus were at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts.  Henry married Almira in 1893 in Rhode Island and they had six children born in Rhode Island: William born in 1894, Edward born in 1896, Ruth born in 1897, Carl born in 1898, Henry born in 1904 and Ella born in 1908.  They were at Lincoln, Providence County, in the 1910 census.

 

Thomas Barlow was born in 1872 in England.  He came to America in either 1872 [1910 census] or 1879 [1900 census], probably with his parents (but their identity is not known).  He married Selina in 1899 and they had one child Thomas born in 1901 in Connecticut.  Thomas and Selina were at Norwich, Connecticut, in the 1900 census and at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1910 census.

 

George F. Barlow was born in 1858 in Canada.  He was at Seneca, Ontario, in the 1871 census and he came to Rhode Island in 1875.  He married Julia in 1890 and they were at Providence in the 1900 census.

 

John Barlow was born in 1859 in England.  He immigrated in 1880 and married Margaret in 1886.  They were at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1900 census.

 

Jesse Barlow was born in 1845 at Rochdale, Lancashire, England.  He married Mary Ann Cooper in 1877 in England and they came to America in 1888 settling at Providence, Rhode Island.  They had eight children:  John William born in 1877 at Bolton, Lancashire, England; George born in 1880 at Bolton; James born in 1883 in England; Mary born in 1886 in England; John born in 1889 at Providence; Henry born in 1893 at Providence; Walter born in 1895 at Providence; and Sarah A. born in 1898 at Providence.

 

John B. and Elizabeth Barlow were born in England in 1853 and 1854, respectively.  They married in England in 1872 and came to America around 1885.  They were at Pawtucket in the 1900 census and at Providence in the 1910 census.  They had seven children; two were reported living in the 1900 census but only one has been identified: James B. Barlow was born in 1885 in England.

 

James and Ann Barlow were married in 1865 in England.  He was born in 1839 and she in 1841.  They had three children born in England: Ester born in 1877, Gertrude B. born in 1879 and Fanny W. born in 1881.  The family came to America in 1888 and were at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

 

Henry and Lucy Barlow were born in 1864 in England.  They married in 1883 in England and came to America in 1888.  They had ten children but only two were living in 1910: Henry born in 1884 in England and Leroy born in 1898 in Rhode Island.  They were at Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island, in the 1900 census and at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, in the 1910 census.

 

William W. Barlow was born in 1863 in England.  He married Lavina in 1886 in England and they came to America in 1888, settling at Providence, Rhode Island.  They had four children:  Elsie born in 1887 in England, Florence born in 1899 at Providence, William born in 1904 at Providence and Irving born in 1904 at Providence.

 

Margaret Barlow was born in 1872 in Ireland.  She came to America in 1888 and was recorded as a servant at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1900 census.

 

Michael J. Barlow was born in 1869 in Ireland and came to America in 1892.  In 1899 he married Mary E. Murray and they had four children: Zeta born in 1900, Francis born in 1901, Regina born in 1902 and Raymond born in 1907.

 

Stephen Barlow was born in 1861 in England.  He married Clara in 1885 in England and they came to America in 1892.  They were at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and they had three children:  Mary E. born in 1889 in England, Ida born in 1894 at Providence and Percy born in 1897 at Providence.

 

Thomas and Eliza Barlow were born in England in 1852 and 1853, respectively, and they married in England in 1873.  Their children were born in England: James born in 1872, Emma born in 1874, Joseph born in 1880 and Elizabeth born in 1883.  The family came to America in 1895 and they were at Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1900 census.

 

William and Mary Barlow were born, respectively, in 1837 and 1840 at Oldham, Lancashire, England.  They were at Oldham in the 1881 census and they had four children born there: William born in 1863, Ruth born in 1874, Leonard born in 1878 and Earnest born in 1882.  It is believed that William Sr. died in England and his widow Ellen, their sons Leonard and Earnest, and their daughter Ruth and her husband Joseph Howard came to America in 1898.  Ellen, Leonard and Earnest were with William Jr. at Providence in the 1900 census and Ellen was with Joseph and Ruth Howard at Providence in the 1910 census.

William Jr. married Mary in 1885 in England.  They had nine children but only two were living in 1900:  Raymond born in 1894 in Massachusetts and Bertha born in 1899 in Rhode Island.  They were at Providence in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.
