My elusive Lydia BARLOW (b. abt.
1784) and husband Ransom ODELL (b. abt 1780) named a son "Nelson"
and the name was carried down every
generation as far as my generation either in the form "Nellie" or
"Nelson." It must have been
a family name to have been so important. I figure the name was a
BARLOW
name since I haven't found any
"Nellies" or "Nelsons" among any other ODELL lines other than this one.
I don't know precisely where my
Lydia and Ransom were born. The census gives New Hampshire as Lydia's
birthplace and New York for Ransom. I think Ransom was probably born either
in the Oblong area that was disputed by Connecticut and New York (area
east of the Hudson River) or else up around the Glens Falls -
Lake George area near the Vermont
border. In the time period of Lydia's birth the area that became
Vermont
was being claimed by New York and
New Hampshire so when she said she was born in New Hampshire, it
might not be the New Hampshire
we think of today.
I know I'm grasping at straws,
but these folks have stumped researchers for many years. They didn't
leave a paper trail. Lydia and Ransom had several children born in
NY in the 1805-1814 time period before moving
to Scioto Co Ohio where the first
"Nelson" - my gg grandfather - was born in 1818. The names of those
New
York- born children include some
very common BARLOW given names - Thomas (the eldest child) and Moses
(the 2nd son). There was
also Mary, Melinda, Chauncey, Benajah (an Odell name), and James.

Looking
for the parents of Sarilda/Ceralda C. BARLOW who married Alonzo Penuel
BACON in Wisconsin or Nebraska about 1860. She was born in New York about
1835 and has a brother, Royal Herman BARLOW born about 1846 in Illinois.
Both claim their parents birth as Vermont (I'd imagine about 1810 or so).
I believe
the
mother was Naomi, but don't have her surname or the fathers name. They
may have a sister named
Prescilla,
but I haven't anything concrete, just a reference.
Royal
named a son Jirah, but I haven't been able to connect these two to the
Jirah BARLOW out of Vermont,
or
any of his siblings.
Has anyone come across, Royal, Sarilda or Naomi? Any guesses?

In
searching our family lineage we came upon Martin Barlow, my great
grandfather of Middlebury Vermont.
My
grandmother Mary Ann Barlow was French Irish and Indian, her mother Florence
Clark was full blooded Indian. This means that Martin my great grandfather
would be French and Irish.
Any information of a Martin Barlow in Middlebury Vermont in your records?
Update on Terry's Barlows.......
After a little bit of research we've found some more Barlows. It appears the Barlows in my lineage come from France. My Great-Great Grandfather was Nathanel Barlow born in France. He married Mary Jane Macse- vent from Ireland. Four sons were produced from that union, Martin Barlow my Great Grandfather, William Barlow, Arthur Barlow, and Leroy Barlow. I do not know the order of birth and only have dates for Martin.
If that helps anyone they're welcome to it.

I've
received a "Fish Genealogy" from a family member (undated).
In it, there is a reference to a Captain
Silas
FISH who married Ann/ Anna BARLOW.
Info
on Ann /Anna includes: born - Bernard, VT 05 Jan 1792;
died - 25 June 1826.
Daughter
of Nathaniel and Betsey "KING" BARLOW.
Children
of Silas Fish and Ann BARLOW were Caroline, Ann, and
Nathaniel Corydon.
Captain
Fish died in Strongsville, Ohio in 1848. I
have no information where Ann BARLOW died.

I wonder if this guy is a descendent of Captain Silas Fish and Ann/ Anna Barlow, daughter of Nathaniel and Betsey "King" Barlow. Anybody know?

I
am researching the following families: BARLOW,
CLOUDEN, MURPHY, Whalen, STEVENS, Bamberg, Massetta,
Noon, MUZZY, Duschen, McCann, Shaw, DAILY, Kaufman, Bickleman,
JEWETT, NYE,
WIETT, Foster, WING, Burgess, Basset, STETSON,
Tupper, Gator, Worden, TEVINGTON, Roberts, Mackrell, Luffe, Driscoll, Green,
and ROSEN. The names in capitals are the family names directly associated
with the Barlow family.
I have
completed some research on all of the families. I traced the Barlow line
back to
George
Barlow d: 1684
in
Sandwich Massachusetts through his son Moses c1654 - c1742.
George may have been the first of this line
or
he may have been the son of George Barlow d: c1653 in Maine. The
family moved to Barnard Vt. in the late 1700s. From there they
migrated to Covington NY c1820. Some members of
the family still reside there while others moved to the Western
New York ---Buffalo--- area.
