Arthur Barlow
POTTER

| This is a beautiful example of Arthur Barlows work produced in 1873. Bearing in mind that he died in 1879 at the age of 34, his use of the few colors that were available during his lifetime was particularly subtle. The ovoid jug with a hinged hallmarked silver top stands 9.5" high to the top of the silver mount. The design is basically flowing and tumbling forms of blue and greenish foliage on a pale gray ground. There are many applied flower heads with brown borders above the foot and below the top. |
| The back stamp is clearly incised with Barlows initials plus another set of initials which I cannot identify. The Doulton Lambeth mark is also clearly incised '1873'. The silver top appears to be part and parcel of the original design and bears the makers mark (E C B- not identified) and the London 'S' letter for 1873. The hallmark appears both on the rim and on the underside of the lid. It would seem that the jug was presented to someone on December 1st 1877 as it inscribed accordingly on the top of the lid. |
