Descendants of William Barlow & Sarah Bennett My Barlows are from Cheshire and Shropshire, England, although my grandfather did minister in churches in Bristol and London before coming to the USA via Montreal and Sault Ste. Marie in 1911, where my grandparents were living. They left for Brooklyn, New York, where he ministered until he died in 1959. I didn't get to know my father or his parents, so I am struggling to find some help in tracing my families lineage back. Following is my lineage as I have proven, as well as information found that may or may not be mine, if you can help to identify any of these families, it would be greatly appreciated. I will be happy to share information with anyone who thinks they might be remotely connected to this family. Proven lineage: |

William Barlow and Sarah Bennett, were both born in Malpas Parish, Cheshire. Sarah was born and grew up in Tushingham, Cheshire, and William may have lived in Bradley, Cheshire. Sarah Bennett was living with Joseph Bennett and Ann 'Edwards' in Tushingham, Cheshire during the census of 1841, 1851, and 1861. She was 10 in 1841 - 19 in 1851 - 29 in 1861 & 30 in 1863, when she married William Barlow Joseph was born in Broxton, Cheshire, and Ann was born in Malpas, Cheshire See also: Census of Tushingham, Cheshire - 1841 These records from the IGI are in question.. Sarah Bennett christened 05 October 1831 Hazel Grove, Cheshire so...was Ann known also as Fanny? Or is this the correct family at all? I have written queries to the Bennett list without any success |
|
William Barlow and Sarah Bennett were married March 06, 1863 in the William is listed as age 35, but probably was older Sarah was 30, and her father was Joseph Bennett, also a farmer See also: Certified Copy of Entry of Marriage 1871 census of Holt Preen, Shropshire William Barlow was a farmer of 125 acres in Holt Preen, Shropshire 1881 census: William Barlow had a 230-acre farm in Wilderhope in Rushbury in Shropshire I do not find them in the 1891 census |
|
William and Sarah had three sons: |
|
| 1. | George Barlow born in Malpas, Cheshire, was 18 in the 1881 census
|
| 2. | Thomas Barlow born in Heywood under Eaton, and was 15 in 1881 Thomas disappeared is not in any census of 1891 that I can find |
| 3. | John Barlow, my grandfather, was born December 11, 1871 in Cardington, Shropshire and died January 30, 1959 in New York, burial February 02, 1959 in the Roslyn Cemetery, Roslyn, New York. Grandfather studied at Didsbury College & became a Wesleyan minister, then a Congregational minister at Bristol and at London while in England. He starting preaching when he was still pre-teen or an early teen in Madeley, Shropshire while apprenticing for a dry goods owner. His father paid two years for the training and my grandfather didn't start earning money until that time was over. (I don't know why he left the farm in Wilderhope) The 1891 census has him visiting in Madeley while he was attending Didsbury College.
John Barlow married Dora Askew Hoggarth April 03, 1899 while still in England. Dora was the daughter of John Mattinson Hoggarth and Jane Elizabeth Askew. The marriage was attended by John Mattinson Hoggarth & Mary "Askew" Griffiths, a sister. The marriage took place in the Wesleyan Chapel, Rawcliffe St., South Shore, County of Lancaster John's father, William Barlow was listed as a retired farmer. (Does this mean that he was still alive?) Reverend John Barlow came to the USA via Montreal, Canada and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in 1911. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1912 & was soon named pastor of the Park Slope Presbyterian Church. Petition for Naturalization Dora died in 1947. Reverend John Barlow lived in Brooklyn, New York until his death 1959 |
Reverend John Barlow and Dora Hoggarth had three children: |
|
| 1. | James Bennett Barlow born in Clifton Bristol December 31, 1900 & died May 04, 1959 buried in Nassau Knolls Cemetery, in Port Washington. His second marriage occurred in 1938 to Joan Sanford Brewster Their son, Francis Sanford Brewster was the executor of the will of the the Reverend John Barlow |
| 2. | Doris E. Barlow born in Clifton Bristol, April 09, 1902, death in 1947 with burial March 11, 1947 in the Roslyn Cemetery, Rosalyn, New York She married Wesley Edwin Hawkins, and they had two sons |
| 3. | John Arnold Barlow born Sheatham Hill SW London October 15, 1904 and died in 1933 of acute appendicitis and was buried May 04, 1933 in the Roslyn Cemetery in Roslyn, New York.
He married my mother, Hazel Virginia Willis and had my sister, Virginia Lee Barlow and myself. I, John W. Barlow married Juanita Grindstaff in Blount Co Tennessee and have two sons |
In trying to locate the parents of William with dates that would be feasible, I find the following information; perhaps you can identify these families, and prove or disprove these as my family: |
|
Census of 1851 and 1861 Malpas Parish, Cheshire: Living on a farm in Bradley, Cheshire This William was 30 in 1851, 40 in 1861, and was gone from Bradley in the census of 1871. Remember that my William Barlow listed his age as 35 in 1863 at his wedding. In the census of 1871, William was listed as 42, but in the census of 1881 he was listed as 58. William was probably older than 35 because he aged 16 years between 1871 and 1881, and if he belonged to William & Elizabeth of Bradley, Cheshire, he reduced his age 7 years between 1861 & 1863 The Cheshire Records Office could not find the christening for a William Barlow with a father named John in the Malpas area, so I looked in the Cathedral in Manchester and found several christenings of William Barlow's that might fit. Christenings: William Barlow christened 20 August 1826 William Barlow christened 04 June 1828 William Barlow christened 24 October 1827 William Barlow christened 23 May 1830
Marriages John Barlow and Ann Barlow married about 1825 John Barlow married Ann Goodier 18 August 1822 John Barlow married Anne Lee from Whitchurch in Salop 18 February 1823 in Malpas, Cheshire in the presence of William Barlow and Mary Lee John Barlow married Elizabeth Evans 05 August 1830 in Malpas Cheshire Perhaps Anne Lee died and John married second to Elizabeth. This would fit the Bradley, Cheshire family with a son named William John and Elizabeth Barlow had daughter's: William Barlow was also born in Agden, Cheshire, in 1821 according to the Bradley census
There are a number of Barlows in the Malpas Parish area in Cheshire, and many more marriages of Barlow in the Cathedral at Manchester |

Jane Elizabeth Askew Hoggarth stated that she arrived in September 1991 on the ship "Majestic." I looked at the Majestic's arrival on September 02, 1891 and October 01, 1891. She was on neither passenger list, but an Eliza and Jane Barlow were on the September 02, 1891 list. They were in their early twenties. Note: My great grandfather, John Mattinson Hog(g)arth came to this side of the ocean some time between 1879 and 1888. His wife and daughter were living in England with his wife's brothers in the census of 1881. I don't know why he would leave his wife and daughter in England. In fact, when his wife Jane E. Hogarth came to America in 1890/1891, Dora was found in the census of 1891 in England with one of her two uncles. John M. Hogarth was the first Marshall of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and made a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen in 1888. He worked on the Lock in Canada before that. His obituary even said he came to New York when he was 17 to work on a farm with one of his brothers. He married his wife in England in 1871, so he must have traveled by and forth across the Atlantic Ocean quite a bit. |

Is this George William Barlow the son of William and Sarah Bennett Barlow? I received a birth certificate for George William Barlow, born in Tushingham, Cheshire March 28, 1863. The marriage certificate for William Barlow and Sarah Bennett have them marrying March 06, 1863, in the Cathedral of Manchester. English people tell me it is unlikely that William and Sarah traveled so far to get married, but I replied that their residences were 20 Spear Street and 22 Spear Street. They could have temporarily moved to establish residences in Lancaster, to avoid getting married in her pregnant state in Cheshire, or just wanted to do something special.
The IGI reported a George William Barlow marrying a Mary Marshall Ward in the Cathedral of Manchester 17 August 1885 I find a Mary M. Ward born 29 January 1861 in Southery, Norfolk; father A. Ward and mother, Rachel Porter. The children of the George Barlow and Mary, as listed in the Eaton under Heywood, Shropshire 1891 census: p>Ada, age 3 --looks like Aaa, so I am just guessing --Eva, age 2 Alice, age 5 months You might remember that Thomas, the second son of William and Sarah Barlow was born in Eaton under Heywood. Thomas disappeared with or without his parents in the census of 1891.
I am hoping that the George William Barlow is my grandfather's oldest brother, but I only have the IGI information making that possible. |
Thank you very much.... John W. Barlow, Tennessee, USA
