THE BARLOW FAMILY OF CLOCKMAKERS CONTINUED..............

by  PETER JAMES SIMON

It was always my intention to research the family  as far as  possible from  available records and even possibly bring the family tree up to the present day in an attempt to make contact with  a present day member of  the clockmaking family.
As we know this process is both difficult and exhaustive and the following information is only as correct as my accuracy in pouring over the  Parish records.   Unfortunately no  research concerning the daughters has been carried out  as yet because it is  my  wish to find a  current day  Barlow and it is only the  sons who would  perpetuate  the  Barlow name.

In an attempt to make the family tree easy to follow, each member of the Barlow clockmakers will be taken in turn one generation at a time until they either reach the present day or cease to exist.   The family will also be split into the Old- ham Barlow’s  the  Ashton Barlow’s  and the Rochdale Barlow’s as  the research has to be carried out in three different towns.

EDWARD BARLOW - CLOCKMAKER of OLDHAM

The children of Edward Barlow, sons only.

HENRY BARLOW born September 4th 1728

Henry Barlow  married Mary Fletcher  at St.  Mary’s Prestwich on  22nd October 1753 at the age of 25.   His trade was noted  as a glazier in  this year but some time between 1757 and 1760 he took up the trade as a hatter.

They had ten children christened at St Mary’s Oldham :

John  April 26th 1754 Trade of father  Glazier
James  April 11th 1757  Glazier
Ellin  March 16th 1760  Hatter Bent Brow
James  November 7th 1762 Hatter Bent Brow
Susannah  April 1st 1766 Hatter
Ellin  January 4th 1769  Hatter Jackson Pitt
Henry  April 28 1771 Hatter Jackson Pitt
Molly  January 16th 1774  Hatter
Betty  July 28th 1776  Hatter Jarrod Croft
James  July 4th 1779  Hatter Bent Brow

It would appear that Henry commenced his hatting business at Bent Brow and  then moved to Jackson Pitt and Jarrod Croft and finished up back at Bent Brow. With three of the sons being christened James two died in infancy. We are left with three sons to carry forward the Barlow name, Henry, John and James.

The final challenge will be to trace the family tree for the Barlow daughters.
