A Township on the fringe of the coalfield area, [as in coal mines] some 4 miles northwest of Chesterfield, [on the B 6051 road] possessing the small Norman Church of St. Lawrence, with registers dating from 1573. The triptych style of well-dressing is practiced here; it began in 1840 as thanksgiving for the improved water supply when a village pump was installed. Flower heads, not petals are used in the designs, and three wells are usually dressed. The Barley or Barlow family originates from here, Robert Barley being Bess of Hardwicks first husband. Incised stone monuments to the family are in the church. Web site for Derby Newspaper Web site for Derby City contributed by: Brian Henry Victor BARLOW |
