I am trying to find some information about one of my ancestors :
Henry BARLOW, supposed to be born in London, 8th of Sept. 1800, educated at Queen's College, Oxford where he was matriculated on may 17th 1817 at age of 16. He is supposed to be descendant of the Barlow's of Barlow Hall near Manchester.

He left Porstmouth on "Royal Sovereign" on 25 Nov. 1830 sailing to Mauritius island where he landed on 21 Marh 1831. He maried Laure Clementine WIEHE in 1834. He died in Mauritius in 1878.
He had 5 children, the youngest Elisa-Mary my great-great grand mother. I do not know the parents of Henry Barlow. Can you Help?

I am a member of Ellesborough Golf Club, Wendover,U.K. The club is 100 yrs old in 2006 and we are trying to make contact with descendants of the original founders. Sir Thomas Barlow 1st Bt. was one. I believe that Sir Thomas Barlow 3rd Bt. who died in 2003 had three children, Dr Monica, Teresa Mary and possibly Philip Thomas. Edward Barlow was born approximately 1560 in Southampton, England and married Joane Ruston. I have a daughter of Edward and Joane, Abigail, born 27 Mar 1699 in Southampton who died bet 1635 and 1650. Abigail (my ancestor) married George Parker whose will was written 24 Oct 1638.

Any information on Edward, Joane and Abigail and the children of Abigail would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching William Barlow c148-1568. He was an Augustinian Canon and prior of Bromehill, which is part of the village where I live. I am using him as a subject for a degree and would welcome any information you can give. In particular his early days, bit of a mystery.

Barlow: William Barlow born about 1786 - but where? Probably London, England. Married Rebecca ?? about 1800-1810, probably in London. Rebecca came from Ely, Cambridgeshire (per 1851 Census, Stepney). William had the insensitivity to die two weeks before the census. I am a direct descendant, now living in Sussex.

Barlow: My family name is primarily english and because my grandparents have died and my father did too, i cannot trace my genealogy. My interest began long after my dad passed away. All i know is they lived in Collyhurst Manchester as kids but before that I have no idea.My Dad Terry was born 1935 with several brothers his Parents were Joseph and Ada. She was very young when they married and died in her 40s.

Migration: I came to Australia in 1987 where my 3 youngest children were born. I have no contact with the Barlows in England and for the most part have maintained my maiden name.

I am researching James Barlow, who married Hannah Mudford at St Giles Cripplegate, London UK in 1802 - was a widower at that stage. The children I know of were Robert and Charlotte. Robert and his family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1853. Does anyone know any more of this line, particular about James?

Hi there my maiden name was BARLOW I am looking for anything on the following people called Barlow, below are details of what I have collected over the last few years.
My father was William Edmund Barlow born 1914.
Grandfather Frederick Edmund born 1889 in Chukoe, Bronington, Flint he had two brothers Stanley b 1892, Hubert b 1895, and one sister called Gladys b 1898. Their parents where William Barlow born about 1856 in Malpas and he married Annie Elizabeth Groves in Caversham, Reading,Oxford in 1884, his trade was house decorator, this was given on the 1901.
Great grandfather William Barlow born about 1856 in Malpas his father was given as John Barlow Postman by profession these detail where taken off William's marriage certificate of 1884, I have searched for John in the malps records but came up with only two entries as follows:-
John Barlow 27th July 1842 mother was a single woman called Elizabeth Barlow
James sometimes they where called John 20th August 1842 parents John Barlow and Elizabeth Barlow formerly Evans.
The only certificate that I could find for William Barlow of malpas was 13th December 1856 where it gives his parents John Barlow and Jane Barlow nee Steen can you add any more light on my problem to find these men.

I am studying the character Billy Barlow as played by many performers in the 19th century. Can anyone tell me anything about Robert Barlow c.1820-1907. He was American born but came to Australia c.1840. He performed as Billy Barlow and used that name in private life too. He lived in Central Victoria, Australia and toured in USA, England and China. He died in Gympie Queens- land. Here in Australia, in the mid 1850's it was claimed that "The Blue-tailed Fly" was "his song". The smallest piece of infor- mation would be most welcome.

I am trying to trace any ancestors or known connections to my grandparents. Both in the USA and UK. They had numerous children; at least seven sons, all who served in the 1rst and 2nd World Wars.

George Barlow was a Lieutenant Quartermaster in the army, then a Sergeant Major in the R.M. Corps. His wife was Anne Elizabeth Henbest. They lived in the Hightown area of Ringwood in Hampshire England. I can find no trace of him or the sons in local records.

The sons were: Captains Charlie, Richard "Dick", Frank, and Stuart, Dudley, Philip, and my father, George. There was also
a daughter named Cassandra "Cassy". All are now deceased.

I would be greatful for even a small amount of information about my Barlow's!!

I am, Bridget M. Flaxman Bates, born in Norwich, Norfolk England. I have one brother, living, information private. My father was Markus / Marcus Charles Oliver Flaxman, date of birth unknown, and, died as a result of a car wreck in 1962 / 63. My mother, Joyce Clesie Lilian Barlow was born in Kings Lynn Norfolk, England, date unknown, and died March 12, 1989 in Norwich, Norfolk England as a result of a long illness. Both parents were cremated in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

I believe my mother had a sister, Gail Barlow, who was married to a chemist, and they lived in Holt, Norfolk England. I do not know my grandparents names.

I have memories of Mother saying when she was single she went to dances in a sidecar attached to a motorcycle and the driver
was usually her friend by name of Everlyn. This was disapproved by the adults and so they did not tell their parents how they got
to the dance.

A few weeks ago I received an e-mail from someone in another village telling me that my parents name is still well thought of; especially mother. The reason being, that she had a dress store and sold clothing of just about any kind. She was remembered because she had a knack for telling 'husbands' what their wives wanted for birthdays, etc, as well as the size. She also made custom tailored suits. I remember seeing her guess, then measure a leg, and then laugh because she was always correct.

Dad was known to stop for a drink daily at a pub that was between the three businesses my parents owned. They also owned several apartments / flats and a house that was rented out to GI's, thus I have spent my life growing up around Americans before moving to the US in 1961.

My home burned several years ago, along with all photograph's and all family history was lost at that time. I would love to hear
from others who might be of this family line, and will be happy to share my memories.

Was she the Alice Barlow whose baptism is recorded on 25 January 1791 at All Saints, Newton Heath, Lancashire, father James BARLOW and mother Mary?

The husband of the daughter of Jeremiah and Alice died on 30 March 1858 in Edge Lane, Droylsden, Manchester. The person who informed the registrar, and claimed to have been present at the death, was one Sarah Barlow. Was she a relative of Alice?

A 2 x great-grandmother of mine, Betty Barlow born 1821 in Outwood, Parish of Prestwich, Lancashire married Richard Nelson born 1818 in Kearsley, near Bolton, Lancashire in 1844.

Betty was the daughter of Titus and Catharine "Kitty" Barlow and died in Kearsley in 1887. She had an illegitimate child, Titus born 1842, before she married my 2x great-grandfather.

Titus married a widow, Mary Marsh, and had 5 known children,

Titus - b. 1880, died in 1946 and had 2 known children: Alfred, 1911-1938 and Ada.

Hope that this may interact with someone's tree.

My lineage as far as I know it is:

Father: William "Bill" John George Barlow, born 28 July 1916, died 07 May 1981
Mother: Elizabeth "Betty" Olwen Barlow, born 10 November 1919, died 13 January 1983
Grandfather: W. G. -William George- Barlow, died 23 December 1951 - aged 76 years ---from gravestone-- DOB c1875
Grandmother: Esther Mary Barlow Nee Bradley, died 04 June 1953 - aged 76 years --from same gravestone-- DOB c1877

However, there is some confusion in the above information as my mother and father's marriage certificate states that my Grand- father's name was William John Barlow, deceased, but the information above comes from a headstone on a grave that my father used to visit when I was a child.

Unfortunately the Church at Llanrwst where I found the above information was pulled down about thirty years ago so I don't think I could find any local records, even though I suppose they must still exist somewhere.

The only other clue I have is that I think I was once told that the next generation back might be from the Cheshire area, possibly Bunbury or Tarporley.

Can any of you help Ady to learn how to find more about his family in England. I explained to him about census records, and suggested a Local History Center, but I am not even sure if they have those in England. I'm not to
well versed in English genealogy research, so I'm hoping some of you can encourage him to move forward. He
said that he had begun once, but the discrepancies in this grandfathers name discouraged him to go on, and now
he has once again been "bitten by the genealogy bug". I for one love to see the younger generation get involved.

James and Margaret lived in the Townland of Galbally and also leased land from from Lord Fermoy in the Townland of Annagh. James sold the land in Annagh to John Ryan and the land in Galbally went to Matthew
Ryan after James' death sometime between 1900 and 1907.

James and Margaret had the following children who were baptized in Galbally:

Honora - Baptized May 21, 1835 Godparents Arthur Barlow and Mary Heffernan.
Honora married John Luddy February 12, 1854 in the parish of Galbally Co. Limerick.

My great grandfather was William Barlow, born abt 1828 in Malpas Parish, Chesire. He was a farmer who married Sarah Bennett, daughter of Joseph Bennett. Sarah was born in Tushingham, Cheshire, and Joseph was born in Broxton, Cheshire.

Joseph married Ann Edwards and had a farm in Tushingham where they resided during the censuses of 1841, 1851, and 1861.

William Barlow was a farmer who moved to Shropshire shortly after his marriage in 1863. William's father was John Barlow, a farmer. I can not locate the household of John Barlow in any Cheshire census. Therefore, I do not know John Barlow's wife or any other of their children. There was a farmer, John Barlow, from Edge who married an Ann Lee in Malpas in 1923, but I can not
find a census record to prove that this John and Ann had a son named William who was born in 1828. (There was a William Barlow christened June 4, 1928 in the Cathedral of Manchester, Lancashire, who had a father named John and a mother named Mary).

I have names of other Barlows in the Malpas Parish area that I have collected in order to find my John Barlow living with his son, William.

My great grandfather was Barlow Alexander MULHOLLAND, born Roscommon c1840. His father was George. The history of Barlow in London England from 1867 onwards is known.

There is also a Samuel WIlliam Barlow MULHOLLAND in Salford Lancashire, 1880 when his son married Matilda McTaggart. In 1889 they named their son Alexander Barlow MULHOLLAND. I've not been able to link these two families. Could this information help somebody link up with their and my family trees?

I have a Mary Barlow died 1729 from --I think-- Denton, Lincolnshire. Her father was Robert Barlow. She married John Holland -born circa 1650, d 1717. She had a son, John Holland, born c1690 at Denton. This is all I have on the Barlows. Robert Barlow is my gr x 7 grandfather.

Denton is a village in south Lincolnshire on the border with Leicestershire and the nearest town -a few miles away- is Grantham.
I'd be grateful for any information on this branch of the Barlows.

I am looking for descendents of George Thomas Barlow, born 06 July 1858 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died 13 April 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He married Sarah Coop.

George's father is Thomas Barlow born 13 June 1823 in Prestwich, England, and died 16 October 1896.

Thomas is the son of Edward Barlow, born 14 August 1801, who is the son of John Barlow.

He married his first cousin Ann Hulme, daughter of George Hulme who married Ann Barlow. Ann was the daughter of John Barlow, who is the grandfather of George Thomas Barlow.

Ann Barlow Hulme was born September 03, 1793 in Unsworth, Lancashire England, the daughter of John Barlow and Alice Spencer and died 11 February 1853, also in Unsworth Lancashire England. She and George were married c1812.

George Hulmes was born 05 January 1794 in Unsworth, Lancashire England to Phillip Hulme and Elizabeth Dawson and died 27 October 1865 in Platte River Nebraska.

My dilema is as follows:

Ret. Rev. William Barlow, I thought born 1584 Barlow, Chorlton Cum Hardy, Lancashire ; died September 19, 1656 Douai, England and that he was the Bishop of Bath & Wells, which I found him listed as in the Catholic Encyclopedia. That would make him William Reudesin Barlow, son of Sir Alexander Barlow and Mary Brereton.

On a list of Bishop's I find that he was a Bishop of St. David's in 1596? ---

Do you know anything about this man and which information is correct?

I am trying to find out if he is the father of George Barlow born c1620, England and died October 31, 1684 in Sandwich, Massa- chusetts. His 1st wife was Mary Vincent Stetson (they had 4-5 children: Aaron, Moses, Samuel & William and maybe a George 2nd wife married about March 4, 1661/62 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, Jane Beme Besse (Widow of Anthony Besse) born 1622 Massachusetts, died ? August 6, 1693? Sandwich, Massachusetts ---they had 2 children; John & Nathan.

I know the rest of the line, and know a lot about George once he was here in the US, but I would like to know about him in Eng-
land, like where he came from, a solid (almost) birthdate and what William was his father and his mom's name....do you think you can help me?

'John Williams and Thankful Barlow - Benajah Tomson & Prudence Eldredge', compiled in 1931 by Charles Tomlin and Clarence R. Brooks, page 13:

No birth or death dates for John Williams but for Thankful Barlow it has born 1738, no place, married 1755 in Holland, died 1818 New Jersey.

It goes on to say:
"Emigrated from Wilhelm, Holland. John emigrated after marrying. He settled at Beaufort Harbor, South Carolina. His wife followed
in 1756. Their son, Barlow, was born at sea, May 12, 1756. This family moved to Cape May, and the to "Maurice River Neck",
now Heislerville, New Jersey."

I have always doubted that John Williams and Thankful Barlow were Dutch, possibly English who went to Holland to escape reli- gious persecution.

I wonder if any of our English members have ever encountered these names.

James Barlow's first wife was Lady Newton who died after having a son and a daughter. His second wife was Lady Newton's cousin, also called Lady Newton. She passed away after having four sons. James then married again but the name of the wife has not been found.

James Barlow who lived in England, presumably in Darlington, and believed to be born around 1781. James left Darlington, England and arrived Baltimore in September 1831 at the age of 50. His third wife (name unknown) and two children, William J. and Elizabeth Ann. (aka Ann Woodland) arrived some time later. James had two more children while in Baltimore. They were Amos and Isabell and she was called Belle. The family moved to Barnesville, Ohio five or six years later. Amos subsequently married Martha Hunt of Baltimore and they raised their family in Barnesville. He and Martha had ten children. Three did not survive. The seven remaining were James N., William (Will) H., Emily (Emma), Martha, Inez, Florence and Alice.
Most of the above information was obtained at the Public Library in Barnesville. Information concerning James and his three wives was in a separate file under the name of Barlow but there was no information concerning who had compiled that data.

I was born a Barlow too, and have been researching the Barlow line for some years. From the earliest I have got to the present
day follows:

SAMUEL BARLOW born c1773, a silk throwster of Congleton, Cheshire, England married 1805 to Hannah Goostrey of Congleton, born 1787.
Children were:

SAMUEL 1810, moved to Warwickshire, England and married Harriett Powell in Warwick in 1833. They lived in Leamington and Samuel was a tin plate worker.
Children who survived beyond infancy were:

THOMAS a groom then a horse cab driver married Catherine Davey, nee Stevens in Leamington, on 6th April 1874.
Their children were:

ALFRED trained as a ladies hairdresser and worked at Harrods Store in London. Whilst in London he met his wife Elizabeth Anne Buggy, the daughter of a horse bus driver. They married in 1905 and had one son, my father, RONALD ALFRED who was born in Kilburn London in 1908. In 1911 the family moved out of London first to a "Pub" in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire called The Thatch (It's still there but is now a restaurant). They soon moved on to Wellington in Shropshire where Alfred set up in busi- ness as a hairdresser in the main street. Ronald followed his father into the hairdressing trade but also trained as a chiropodist.
In 1935 he married Margaret Tudor of Wellington. They had two children, Annette (myself) and Gilbert. I married Thomas Ledger and have no family but the Barlow name lives on!
Gilbert married Coral Haley of Halesowen, Worcestershire. They have 3 sons, Andrew, Simon and Nicholas. Andrew married Julie Lacy and has Thomas and Lucy . Simon and Nicholas are as yet unmarried.
I have further details re various members of the family back to around 1800 but the information here is my direct line. I would love to find out more about the original Samuel and also contact anyone who feels they might be related at any stage since then!

James D. Barlow

As far as I have succeeded in tracing my Barlows, there does not seem to have been anyone who has ventured to emigrate to the USA. My father died whilst I was young, so the vague stories I recall were of a brother who went to Australia, and a sister to South Africa (or was it the other way round?).
James Barlow lived and worked as a silk weaver in Congleton, Cheshire. He married Martha Chesters at the Astbury Parish Church on May 6th 1821. Of their 8 known children only 3 survived. Those who died young - Jane, Mary Ann, William Simister, Mary, and Elizabeth. Martha survived, as did another Mary and my grandfather Robert Barlow.

Some time between 1841and 1851James became the Innkeeper, victualler, at the Horseshoe Inn, Newbold Astbury, and died there in June 1855. His son-in-law John Thompson, Martha's husband, was then licensee for a time, and later, my grandfather Robert became licensee. This must have been a tenancy only, as the property, and small farm attached were part of the Grey-Egerton Estate at that time.

As for Mary, she was a pupil teacher, married a teacher, and moved to the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire and were Master and Mistress of a school there.

Robert married Mary Ann Garbutt at Astbury on July 21st, 1862. There were 10 children Thomas, Robert, Mary (died age 29), Alfred, Martha, Elizabeth, Emily, Charles, Margaret, and John Eaton my father, who married a Yorkshire lass Edith Sunderland, at Rothwell, Leeds on Sept. 17th 1924.

I would appreciate any help in getting back further than James, my great grandfather, who claimed to have been born at Congleton but no baptism has come to light there, or at Astbury.

Has anyone heard of this, which is said to be the motto of an ancient Barlow family - "En Foi Prest" Motto translation "Ready in Faith". This was copied exactly as I read it.

Helens age at marriage was 27 but I can find no trace of her birth in the 1881census.
It also showed that her father John Wilson, fisherman, was deceased. This is thought to be a Scottish and East Anglian connec- tion as she used to take my father to Peebles and Yarmouth and Kessingland. I don’t know if she had any brother's or sister's as she was very secretive about her past. Nobody knows what day or month she was born let alone the year. I have traced a Helen Elizabeth Wilson born in Springburn, Glasgow in 1867 to 155 Lloyd St, Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Manchester, in 1881. The head of the house is John Wilson, 28 [accountant's clerk] brother, also there: - Isabella M. Wilson, 19 [scholar] sister and what looks like George and Charles 14 & 12, both brothers. This leads me to think that both parents are dead. What happened to them? Is this the Helen Elizabeth Wilson that I am looking for?
Did she move to East Anglia if so when and where too?
Did others in her family also move there, hence the visits with my father?
Did one of them return to Scotland and settle in the Peebles area, if so who and where?

Dispense real and personal estate by public auction. If this auction took place where would I find details of it?

Alice was formerly a Barlow, her mother was Ellen; she was 65 at the 1841 census and 79 in 1851 census?
Does anybody have any details of Robert Warrener or his family in Blackburn around 1836.

My Grandmother was born in Little Lever Bolton Lancashire in 1895; her name was Hannah Barlow. At the time of her birth, her Mother wasn't married and there is no Father on her birth certificate: I am searching for Hannahs Mother Emma Barlow who at the time was a Stitcher in a Bleached Cotton Works.
It is believed that about 1900 Emma married but to whom I am not sure, although one of my Uncles feels the name was Crowshaw or something similar. On Hannahs marriage certificate: it states her Father as being Corby Taylor I have searched the IGI but there isn't a marriage for Barlow and Taylor.

The family of a John Barlow who was born around 1792 in Hyde (?) England. He left for America in March 1849 with his son William, James, James' wife, Elizabeth, and their son, Ellis. They sailed into the port at New Orleans and eventually settled in Cross Plains, Wisconsin.

All I have is the marriage of my great-grandparents:
Joseph Bridge & Esther Barlow, 02 March 1834, St. Mary's, Bury, Lancashire.
Esther died in 1853. Her death certificate (information provided either by a brother-in-law or father-in-law: where her husband was
at the time is not known) says she was 35. Her burial information says 45. They lived in the Greengate, Salford, area most of the time. They show up on the 1841 census (where ages are rounded to the nearest 5) and that makes the 35 age look more plausible.
They were apparently part of the 'missing section' of the 1851. I tried via the IGI to find parents for Esther - I have 15 possible combinations from the IGI alone. Her children (and there may have been one previous to the first that I have, as there is a 2 year
and 2 month gap between the marriage and the first known child), in order, were named: Joseph, Mary Ann, John and Ellen.

IF these were their only children, and IF they were following traditional naming patterns, then I suspect I am looking for a John and Ellen Barlow as her parents. I have only looked up to 1816, however. I need to find possibles for an 1818 birth.

John William Barlow was b. 26 February 1895 in the UK. He died at Sheffield WRY in 1945. His father was also a John William, who died at Sheffield WRY around 1946, he was a coal miner, had lived in Sheffield from at least the very early part of this century and I believe his wife was Irish and she died around 1933.
