Captain-General and Rebel Chief, The Life of James, Duke of Manmouth by J.N.P. Watson 1979 Lucy Barlow (1631-1659) was a Royalist spy and paramour of Charles II. Her real name was Lucy Walter, she was the daughter of William Walter, lord of Roche Castle in Pembrokshire. Her cover name was supplied by her cousin, John Barlow, of Barlow Hall, Colchester, Master of Ordinance and Justice of the Peace. James, Duke of Monmouth, was the illegitimate son of Lucy and Charles II. He was executed in 1685 after after a failed attempt to take the crown away from his uncle, James II.
