Note: All of the above information taken from the Roll of Freemen which dates from 28th May 1842 and which is still in use today.

Great-Great Grandfather: BARLOW, JOSEPH of Derby Taylor, Son of Thomas Barlow of Derby of Derby Taylor sworn 23rd October 1826.

Great-Great-Great Grandfather:  BARLOW, THOMAS of Derby Frameworkknitter apprentice to Joseph Dallison of the same place Frameworkknitter.  Sworn 16th July 1798

note: the above two entries taken from a bundle of vellum pages which originally compirsed a Register of Freemen of Derby 1732-1841.  These pages are all damaged around the edges by fire, have been partially soaked in water and thendried.  The result of this treatment was severe shrinkage and creasing ovet the lower portion of most of the pages with the affected areas becoming hard and brittle and like thin glass.  This damage obviously resulted from the firs of 1841.

The above information shows that the Freemen in your family was first earned by servitude (apprenticeship) by Thomas Barlow in 1798 and has passed by birth, (hereditary) from father to son, down to you.  (The last Freemen of Derby admitted by servitude was in 1881.)

Other information found:
BARLOW, JOSEPH - place of abode-
12 Agard Street per Roll Book of 11th and 12th December 1832 and Registers up to and including 1855.
                    Green Street per Register 1856
                    Brook Street per Register 1857 & 1858
17 Gisborne Street per Registers 1859 to 1862
As there is no entry for Barlow, Joseph in the Register of 1863 and later, this could indicate he had died between 2 Oct 1862 and 3 Oct 1863 (the dates of the two Registers concerned)

BARLOW, HENRY - Place of Abode-
5 Bag Lane per Registers 1872 & 1873  (now called East Street)
                  27 Bloom Street per Registers 1874, 1875, and 1876
                  241 Abbey Street per Registers 1877, 1878, and 1879

From 1879 the Registers of Electors no longer indicated those who were Freemen.
