The current qualification criteria for inclusion into the Freemen of Derby are as follows:

a.         The candidate must be the son of a Freeman;

            and either

       (i) The candidate's father must have been admitted as a Freeman at the time of the
            candidates birth;

             or

     (ii)  The candidate's father must have been eligible for admission as a Freeman at the time of
            the candidate's birth;

b.   (i)  The candidate must be a resident of the City of Derby at the time of his application for
            admission;

            or

     (ii)  In the case of a candidate whose father would have been eligible for admission under
           paragraph a(ii) above, the candidate must either be a resident of the City at the time of
           his application for admission, or have been a resident when he reached the age of
           majority.

c.        The candidate must have reached the age of majority (Now the age of 18 years)

An alternative qualification is for the candidate to have served an apprenticeship of seven years to a Freeman and to be a resident of the City, in like manner, at the time of application. However, this qualification can be ignored, as most unlikely to arise at the present time.
