Kendell Hunter Barlow of Rutherford Co Tennessee and White Co Arkansas

It is unknown as yet, just where Kendall Hunter Barlow, fits into the  Alfred Hirton Barlow family, but I am relatively sure that he does. It has been an almost impossible family to research.  Barbara Finney has given family information, and I have done several census searches.   If anyone has information on this family, please contact Susan BARLOW Holmes or Barbara Finney

Barbara Finney writes in September 2007:  I have been looking at my Barlow records and doing some more checking. I am more than convinced now that I have TWO Kendal Barlows in my line, one who is my great grandfather named either Kendall Hunter or Hinton Balow but Kendall H. Barlow in any case and his father Kendall Barlow without the H. or at least not signing it on the marriage bond for his son Kendall H. Barlow when he married Nancy C. Garner. I also have reason to believe that Kendall H. Barlows marriage to Nancy may have been his second marriage. I base this info on the fact that on the marriage bond there are clearly two men involved, Kendall H, Harlow who is getting married, and Kendal Barlow who is co-signing for the bond. I had thought at first they just had the same man listed more than once but when one reads the wording and looks at the signatures it is TWO Kendal Balow's. Since this marriage takes place in 1847 in Rutherford Co Tennessee, I re-checked the 1840 census for Rutherford Co TN and lo and behold there are TWO Kendal Balows on it on the same page with two different family groupings.    One Kendall Barlow has 4 males on it, 2 over 10 and under 15 one over 15 and under 20 and one over 60 but under 70 and 3 females 1 over 15 and under 20 1 over 30 but under 30 and 1 over 50 but under 60. I am going to presume this is the parents and siblings of the other Kendall Barlow on the Rutherford co. 1840 cenus who is listed as Kendall Barlow with 4 members of his household with 2 males 1 over 15 but under 20 and 1 over 20 but under 30 and two females 1 under 5 and 1 over 20 but under 30. Just due to the age of the Kendal Barlow who is over 60 but under 70 on the 1840 census he has to be a different one from the Kendal Barlow who is my great-grandfather that married Nancy Garner.  I think they are father and son.   This 1840 census info combined with the marriage bond suggest it very heavily.   A lot of the ages don't match perfected on other records but I have seen a wide margin of error in much of my other genealogy records so that is not so uncommon.

JOSEPH BARLOW, born c1850 in Tennessee   He could possibly be the Joseph Barlow, age 50, found in Kaufman Co Texas, 1900.  His age, date of birth, both and place of birth would work for him.   I was unable to locate them in 1880.  In 1910, no record of Joseph or Mary, but 'Stant' is a 25 yr old, hired man, widowed, in the home of Joe Ashworth, in Kaufman Co Texas.    Census Image

2. SAMUEL MABRY / PORTER BARLOW, born 09 June 1858 Rutherford Co Tennessee, and died 24 February 1921 in Houston, Harris Co Texas

Sam's death certificate list his parents as Porter Barlow and Caroline Smith, which really confuses me, my guess is that whoever gave that information must have been guessing ....also found in Faulkner Co Ar marriage license, that Sam married Sallie McNew on May 04, 1880.  The census for 1880 shows that to be the case.

He married 1.) MOLLIE BROWN on 28 December 1882 in White Co Arkansas. She was born c1864 in Tennessee, and died c1905 White Co Arkansas

He married 2.) MISSOURI FOWLER, who was born 1853 in Arkansas.  She has a son from previous a marriage; Joda Fowler born September 1885

Sam married 3.) ETHEL CLARA HOLLIDAY JOHNSON on 18 March 1907 in Belcher, White Co Arkansas. She was born 29 March 1883 in Fountain Co Indiana.

Ethel Clara Holliday first married in Fountain Co Indiana to August Johnson in 1900. They divorced and remarried over 20 years later after Sam Barlow's death. Ethel did not have children with A. Johnson the first time but during their second marriage, she had 1 daughter, Anne Alice Johnson who was born c1925 in Houston, Harris Co Texas.

All these children died young according to my mother from yellow fever as did their mother from yellow fever. The information on the children of Sam Barlow and Mollie Brown and also on Missouri Fowler is written in the Barlow Family Bible in my posssion as of last year, 2003. Barbara Finney

ROBERT MABRY BARLOW, born 30 July ____ in Dilly, Frio Co Texas, and died 20 July ____ in Houston, Harris Co Texas.   He married FRANCES NEWSOM.
They had two children: Robert Mabry Barlow, Jr., died at age 3, and Louis Rodney Barlow. There may have been others who died as infants, but these are the only two known.  Louis married Sadie, and had several children, most of whom died from the Rh factor.

Barbara writes:  My Uncle Bobby Barlow was a wild character. Tough, and scrappy even though he was a small man. He was a carnival stunt motorcyclist during the depression to help feed the family. He would do things like ride the cycle in one of those walled pits where you use a ramp to get the cycle up on the walls and then centrifical force keeps the cycle going around and around on the wall seeming to defy gravity. There were stories that he got drunk and went to a local train trestle; waited for a train to be in the distance and he then got his motorcycle up to speed, timed it so that he would just barely make it over the trestle ahead of the train and he did it while standing up in the saddle of the bike, no hands ma .... I think he was trying for an early 'Darwin' award. I understand my Aunt  boxed his ears for that stunt so that he never did it again ... he settled down to being a welder for the balance of his life. His sister, my mom was a bit of a character too and still is. She too, rode the old Indian model motorcycles.     Robert died from grief when his son, Louis, died from liver cancer.

3.  ROBERT H. BARLOW was born December 1859 in Tennessee, and died between 1906-1910, probably in White Co Arkansas.

He married MALICIA.  She was born August 1862 in Iowa.

I was unable to locate any of this family with certainty in the 1920 census, see my notes near the bottom of this page for Robert Barlow, who may possibly be a son.

I doubt Robert ever lived in Iowa, but I could be wrong.  It appears that Malicie was from Iowa, and perhaps had children from a previous marriage, and either Robert adopted them, or a mistake was made by the census taker by listing them as Barlow.  The census shows Robert and Malicia to have only been married 11 years, which would put their marriage c1889.  Malicia is shown to have only born 10 children, though 11 are shown here, thus one may not even be a child of theirs.  You will note that two children have birthdates within only a few months of the other, making them impossible to be siblings, not too mention, two children are named Robert.
This family will definitely need more research!

1910:   Robert, age 24, single, born Arkansas, father born in Carolina, mother in Arkansas, is a hired man in the home of J.A. Brown, Dogwood, White Co Arkansas, within a few doors of Malicia...I believe he will be the same as this one.

To further muddy the waters, I find in 1910, White Co Arkansas, Thomas Barlow, age 42, born in Tennessee, as well as both parents:

They are neighbors to a family named Duggar / Duggan. See query, next column...
This first caught my attention because he was born in Tennessee, and then because he lived so near Malicia, widow of Robert H. Barlow.

The following query caught my attention when I noted that Joseph (above) had a son name Stanhoke / Stanhope, and then the fact that the Thomas just above lived next door to a family named Duggan .. this may all be coincidence, but perhaps not  .......

I have been searching this Barlow line for several years. I have learned that my great-grandfather's name is John Barlow from Tennessee ...  I have been told that his wife, name unknown, died while giving birth.  He left my grandfather with people named Duggins or Duggans and moved on to Texas where he remarried.  They had another son names Stanhope Barlow.  I hope someone can help me with this ... don't have a clue as to what town he moved to. ..thanks...

...Could the John E., son of Kendall H. Barlow be the John that Linn is speaking of in her query?  I was not able to locate him after 1880...

One more note of interest is this Robert M. Barlow, whom I at first suspected was Robert Mabry, until I noted he died in 1912 in Texas, but perhaps this Robert is one of the Robert's listed as a son of Robert H. Barlow and Malicia.

Barbara did mention that Sam's brother, who would have been Robert H., managed a restaurant in Little Rock or Searcy, so perhaps this is a son of Robert H. carrying on the family business.

Other Barlow families were living in White Co in the 1900's, but I didn't find anything that made me believe they related to these families, other than the two mentioned above.
