Ancestors and Descendants of Arthur Knight Barlow |
| + Larger Font | + Smaller Font |
As webmistress of this website, I have made it my goal to try to put together for all the Barlow's who came south. I have worked on this family several times and always became frustrated and gave up. In August 2010, I decided to research the families from 1840 forward and leave the earlier ones to the family to sort out. There are just too many David's Benjamin's, Batts, and Knights prior to 1800 and the early 1800's. The following lineage of Arthur Knight Barlow comes from Margaret Trotter and Barbara Chandler and from census records I have found. Other records that I have compiled are shown as: Barlow in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, where it seems this family originated. If anyone would care to share more of this BARLOW family, I would be most appreciative. |
A DNA donor has not been found for this line of Barlow's. The donor must be a male, and a direct descendant carrying the Barlow name in order to participate. Please contact me if you would be interested in testing for this line. |
Margaret Trotter, a descendant of this family found the following written in the papers of her grandmother, Ida Lawrence Barlow Trotter in the late 1800's: David Barlow was a direct descendant of Arthur Barlow, who was sent to the United States in 1584 by Sir Walter Raleigh, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Arthur Barlow and his brother, Bartholomew,in company with Philip Amedis, landed on the coast of North Carolina in 1584. Bartholomew Barlow and Philip Amedis returned to England to tell of the new colony they had founded near the mouth of theOorolet Creek, but Arthur Barlow remained, and there are now a number of his descendants in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and in Quarboro. |
| GENERATION 1 |
| 1. | DAVID BARLOW died before 1812. Conflicting information as to his parents, some say BENJAMIN, and some say DAVID and SARAH BARLOW He married 1) MARY [perhaps BATTS] She apparently died shortly after the birth of Alfred Knight Barlow He married 2) LUCY BATTS KNIGHT . The daughter of Peter Knight and Anna Bell, she was born on 14 February 1782 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died 02 July 1867. She had previously been married to Isaac Batts. |
Lucy is said to be the sister of Alfred Knight who married Sarah/Sally Barlow, who was the daughter of David Barlow and Nanny Proctor. |

Information from"Lost Links" states: Arthur Knight Barlow, born November 30, 1809, by his first wife had but one child, James Arthur Barlow However, census records from 1850 Hinds Co Mississippi show that he had three children, and in letters written by Ida Barlow Trotter, she mentions that she had brothers, Thaddeus and James, though Joel must have died young, as she did not mention him. |
|
| Arthur is living in the home of John Read in 1860 Hinds Co Mississippi census, his age 53. | |

Children of Arthur Barlow and Winifred Atkinson are: |
|
| i. | JAMES ARTHUR BARLOW, born in 1833 in North Carolina |
James is listed as 17 years old on the 1850 census of Hinds Co Mississippi, in the home of his father. Also, a James A. Barlow, age 16 is enumerated as a student in Oakridge College in 1860 Claiborne Co Mississippi. He is not found on the 1860 census with his family, however, I find a James Barlow, age 27, a lawyer, boarder in the Morgan home in Copiah Co Mississippi that may be him. Nothing more is known of James, except that Ida writes in a letter that he "fell" on Malvern Hill, meaning he died in the Civil War. The only records I can find for a James A. Barlow who served from Mississippi in the Civil War, shows: James A. Barlow 1st Lieutenant Co D, 12th MS Infantry However, it is also shown as James P. and James R., the middle initial is not clear. Co D, 12th MS was formed in Adams Co Mississippi, "The Natchez Fencibles" |

| ii. | THADDEUS BATTS KNIGHT, born 1835 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died 11 October 1858 in Hinds Co Mississippi |
| iii. | JOEL BARLOW, born August 1850, and may have died young, as he is not found in a 1860 census. However, in 1870 Bolton, Hinds Co Mississippi, a 20 year old Joe Barlow lives alone as a farm laborer that may be him. I did not locate him again in an 1880 census. |
| Children of Arthur Barlow and Elvira Read are: | |
| 4 iii. | IDA LAWRENCE BARLOW, born 02 September 1854 in Edwards Depot, Hinds Co Mississippi, and died 12 February 1909 |
| iv. | WALTER READ BARLOW, born 1856. He is living in the home of John Read in 1860 Hinds Co Mississippi and again in 1870 Carroll Co Mississippi. He married MATTIE E. CAMPBELL on 11 March 1875 in Hinds Co Mississippi, and Margaret tells us they had two children, Ida and Walter Barlow. I could not locate any further records for Walter. |
| Child of Arthur Barlow and Fanny Garry/Garcy is: | |
| v. | BENJAMIN BARLOW born about 1866 in Mississippi |
I was unable to find Fannie or Benjamin in an 1870 census, but did locate them in 1880 Livingston, Madison Co Mississippi. Fannie, a widow, aged 37, born in Alabama, and Benny, aged 16, born in Mississippi. I was unable to locate him again in a 1900 census. |

|
It might also be interesting to note that from 1870 and all subsequent census of Edgecombe Co North Carolina, there are several black families named Barlow who were most likely slaves of this family, as in looking through the records, they appeared to be quite a wealthy family. |
|
| Children of David Barlow and Peninah Shirley are: | |
| i. | SARAH ELIZABETH BARLOW, born 09 November 1834. and died 28 April 1868. She married married JOSEPH W. LLOYD on 09 April 1856 in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co North Carolina |
| ii. | ANNIE ELIZABETH BARLOW, born 25 June 1836. and died 05 August 1917. She married FRANK D. FOXHALL on 17 December 1850 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina Aneliza Barlow was in the 1860 census with her parents, and as Anne E. Foxhall in the 1870 census, living with her siblings. The 1860 census finds F.D. Foxhall, age 24, the sheriff of Tarboro is shown as the head of S.E. Foxhall [female - age 56] whom I assume will be his mother, along with 2 other persons. I did not locate Frank in an 1870 census, though his mother, Sarah E. Foxhall is the head of her own household, which includes a 2 year old toddler named Frank. F.D. Foxhall is married to Mary L. in the 1880 Edgecombe Co North Carolina census, and I am curious to know if that is Annie's sister, Mary Louisa. They are neighbors to Alice H. and her husband, Seth Speight. |
