The John Read family came to Mississippi in 1828 after spending six intervening years between Tennessee and Mississippi and Alabama. Son, Jesse and daughter, Rebecca, had been born in Greene Co Alabama. The family had also lived in Tuscaloosa Co Alabama.
In Mississippi, the Reads lived first in Madison Co, where daughter, Elvira, was born in 1829. It was not long before they moved on to Hinds Co and established a farm on land five miles from Edwards between Bolton and Edwards. Here they remained for 35 years, tending their farm, growing cotton. Their last child, Mary Elizabeth, was born there in 1835.
In 1850, their real estate was valued at $1200; in 1860; $10000 and personal estate was $19000.
John and Dicy were Methodists, worshipping at the Old Liberty Church at Edwards. Dicy was buried in the Old Hinds Co Cemetery there. She died in 1867, at 68 years of age, while on a visit to Carroll Co near Winona at her son Jesse's home.
John left the farm after Dicy's death and moved to be near Jesse in Carroll County. Winona did not become part of Montgomery Co, until 1871 when Carroll Co was divided. We do not know when John died. It was after 1871 when he applied for a War of 1812 pension at 77 years. Only two of their children were still living when John and Dicy died, John and Mary Elizabeth. John and Dicy were married over 50 years.
Arthur Knight Barlow, Elvira's husband, lived in the Read house with his new family after John left. An earlier Barlow farmhouse had been burned in the Civil War. Ida Barlow, daughter of Elvira and Arthur Knight Barlow, had gone with her grandmother to visit Jesse. She stayed on there after Dicy's death and was raised by her aunt and uncle.
In 1916, John Read's heirs received $2,160.00 for property taken or destroyed in the war.

James is listed as 17 years old on the 1850 census of Hinds Co Mississippi, in the home of his father. Also, a James A. Barlow, age 16 is enumerated as a student in Oakridge College in 1860 Claiborne Co Mississippi. He is not found on the 1860 census with his family, however, I find a James Barlow, age 27, a lawyer, boarder in the Morgan home in Copiah Co Mississippi that may be him. Nothing more is known of James, except that Ida writes in a letter that he "fell" on Malvern Hill, meaning he died in the Civil War. The only records I can find for a James A. Barlow who served from Mississippi in the Civil War, shows:

JOEL BARLOW, born August 1850, and may have died young, as he is not found in a 1860 census. However, in 1870 Bolton, Hinds Co Mississippi, a 20 year old Joe Barlow lives alone as a farm laborer that may be him. I did not locate him again in an 1880 census.
WALTER READ BARLOW, born 1856. He is living in the home of John Read in 1860 Hinds Co Mississippi and again in 1870 Carroll Co Mississippi.
He married MATTIE E. CAMPBELL on 11 March 1875 in Hinds Co Mississippi, and Margaret tells us they had two children, Ida and Walter Barlow. I could not locate any further records for Walter.

I was unable to find Fannie or Benjamin in an 1870 census, but did locate them in 1880 Livingston, Madison Co Mississippi. Fannie, a widow, aged 37, born in Alabama, and Benny, aged 16, born in Mississippi. I was unable to locate him again in a 1900 census.

It might also be interesting to note that from 1870 and all subsequent census of Edgecombe Co North Carolina, there are several black families named Barlow who were most likely slaves of this family, as in looking through the records, they appeared to be quite a wealthy family.

I did not locate Frank in an 1870 census, though his mother, Sarah E. Foxhall is the head of her own household, which includes a 2 year old toddler named Frank. F.D. Foxhall is married to Mary L. in the 1880 Edgecombe Co North Carolina census, and I am curious to know if that is Annie's sister, Mary Louisa. They are neighbors to Alice H. and her husband, Seth Speight.

BARLOW, age 28, she was born in Virginia. 1900 Swift Creek Edgecombe Co North Carolina finds David H., age 56, EMMA/EMILINE W.., age 50, they have been married 20 years and have had no children. 1910 Rocky Mount, Edgecombe Co North Carolina show David, age 66, and Emiline, age 51, married 30 years with no children. However, they did have nieces and a nephew living in their home for much of their married life.

LUCY BATTS BARLOW, born 20 May 1848, and died 14 September 1919. In the 1880 census of Edgecombe Co, Lucy is single, a lady of leisure in her sister, Alice Speights home. Apparently she did not marry, as she is still shown as Lucy Barlow, age 52, sister-in-law to the Speight family, and age 61 in 1910, see #5

Alpha Peebles Trotter married his third cousin Ida Lawrence Barlow. In his early manhood, Alpha Peebles Trotter was a soldier in his father's company in the Civil War. After the war he went into the drug store business in Duck Hill, Mississippi. Then he farmed in Carroll Co Mississippi for several years. For twenty-five years he was a traveling salesman for drugs.
