Janna Puskala writes: I think that John Barlow or his father took the Barlow name when moving to the US from Finland. It is not a Finnish surname, and many immigrants chose a name that might not have any connection to their names in Finland. And in the nineteenth century in the Western Finland most of people did not have any surnames, they used patronymics, and house names. When moving they changed their "surname". Also, Wilhelmina and her brother John's surname is Lidman, not Lilladwaw, or Leitman as shown in the sources below.
GENERATION 1
The following family is shown having immigrated in 1888 from Finland. A note posted on Find-a-Grave.com shows that John William Barlow is the son of GEORGE BARLOW and LYDIA EVERETT, but I could not find any records to substantiate that. I did a search for a Barlow family in the 1900 census, specifically Lincoln Co Washington, where John's obituary shows him to be living at that time. I did find a JOHN BARLOW, age 50, and his wife, HANNAH, both having migrated from Russia, he in 1882, her in 1888, along with their 3 young children born in Washington. One is named Violet, born 1896. Wilson Creek, Lincoln Co Washington Census Image John, enumerated as William Barlow, born May 1875 in Russia, is also among the those enumerated in Wilson Creek, Lincoln Co Washington in 1900, see transcription with his family lineage. I think that John may be the father of John W., perhaps Hannah a second wife, seeing that they had been married only 10 years. I was unable to locate that family again after 1900.

GENERATION 2

JOHN WILLIAM BARLOW2 was born 30 May 1875 [IHS,C,O,WWI] in Finland, [O,C,IHS] or Russia, [1900C] and died 14 October 1952 in Lake Sammamish, Rural Issaquah, King Co Washington. [DR,FG,O,IHS] According to the 1920 census, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1888, and was naturalized in 1896.

He married WILHELMINA LILLADWAW, [DR of Theodore, IHS] on 26 May 1901. [O] A member of the family tells me that Wilhelmina's maiden name is LIDMAN. She was born 1872 in Finland [C,DR] and died 23 March 1955 in Issaquah, King Co Washington at age 82. [DR] The 1920 census shows her having immigrated in 1899 and naturalized in 1902. I was unable to locate anyone with her maiden name in a 1900 census either. Both John and Wilhelmina are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Issaquah, King Co Washington. William Barlow, head, age 25, born May 1875, he and both parents born in Russia, Charles Thomson, partner, age 41, born June 1859 in Russia, and Thomas Hall, servant, age 49, born January 1851 in Ireland.

JOHN BARLOW was the son of a Finnish coal miner, but he wanted a more exciting life for himself. Although he was just a youngster when his family immigrated to Carbonado, [Pierce Co Washington] he struck out on his own to be a cowboy in Eastern Washington. The glamour of life on horseback soon wore off, but he did find himself a Finnish wife and a career as a farmer on the other side of the mountains. In 1906, the family bought a homestead in the Issaquah area that covered 130 acres from Lake Sammamish to the base of Cougar Mountain. John and his sons built the dairy into a thriving business, which operated until the 1960's. He had the first gas-powered launch on the lake. He used it to take his cream to Monohon, where it was shipped out to Seattle on the train. The water route was much faster than taking the cream into the Issaquah area by horse and buggy. The old Barlow dairy farm included areas that today are the western parts of the state park, the Mark Frisby Tennis Academy, a stretch of Newport Way, and more than 2,000 feet of waterfront on Lake Sammamish. All three surviving children still live on parts of the homestead, although most of the land has been sold.

In this early 1900's photograph, John Barlow and Alfred Kerola are standing on spring boards, as they start the undercut in preparation for felling this large Western red cedar tree with a crosscut felling saw and axes. The location of the tree is unknown, but it is possible it was on the Barlow farm grounds. > > >

The Barlow Farm was located near the southern tip of Lake Sammamish many years ago. This photo, looking north, shows the Barlow house between 1910 and 1920.
Some interesting points in the photo are the old wagon trail to Factoria in the foreground at the far right (now the path of Interstate 90), the stand of trees on the point in the background (now the South Cove neighborhood), and the children's swing in the front yard of the house.

The Barlow dairy farm and farmhouse was formerly located on what is now the south side of I-90 going up the hill westbound toward Eastgate in Bellevue. This photograph most likely dates before 1920, as the paved Newport Way, which is now in the area behind the former farmhouse, is not there. Construction of U.S. 10 in the late 1930's cut the farm property in half

John's WWI Draft Registration shows that he became a citizen of the U.S. through his father's naturalization.

02 April 1909, Issaquah Press: JOHN LEITMAN (a member of the family tells me the name should be LITMAN) died at the home of his sister, Mrs. J.W. BARLOW Sunday, March 28th at 10 o'clock. The funeral occurred the following day from the residence. Deceased was a single man about twenty-seven years. Death was caused by tuberculosis. [Question: is this a half brother?]

01 December 1927, Issaquah Press: The Finnish Church, Messrs. J.J. Lundul, J.W. BARLOW, and L. Jusilla, trustees, has purchased the Methodist church building on the point of the hill near the school house.....

29 August 1935, Issaquah Press: Ray Jackson of Los Angeles has purchased the thirty acre J.W. BARLOW farm...

29 May 1941, Issaquah Press: ANNIVERSARY SURPRISE FOR MR. AND MRS BARLOW. Mr. and Mrs. Barlow were pleasantly surprised Sunday by their children and relatives, the occasion being their 40th anniversary. They were remembered with a lovely present.
A picnic dinner was served to thirty-five on the beach of their home on Lake Sammamish.

10 July 1941, Issaquah Press: J.W. BARLOW, farmer of the lower valley, was seriously injured last Saturday by the farm bull. He was leading the animal when it swung its head around against him, knocking him down.
The animal, a monster is size, did not seem angry but more in play, and butted Mr. Barlow again on the ground. He called for help and when rescued was in such pain he was taken to the Kirkland Hospital where it was found he had sustained broken ribs and other injuries. Yesterday evening he was reported as improving.

16 October 1952, Issaquah Press: J.W. BARLOW, LOCAL PIONEER PASSES TUESDAY
JOHN WILLIAM BARLOW, Issaquah resident for 46 years, died Tuesday, October 14, at his home near Lake Sammamish after a brief illness. Funeral services for Mr. Barlow will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the Community church with interment at Hillside Cemetery.
Born in Finland on May 30, 1875, he came to Carbonado, Washington when he was 12 years of age. Two years later he moved to Wilbur where he resided for 17 years. While in Wilbur he operated a wheat ranch.
Mr. and Mrs. Barlow were married on May 36, 1901. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary a year ago last May.
With his family Mr. Barlow moved in 1906 to the farm on Lake Sammamish where he resided until his death Tuesday.
A highly respected man in the community Mr. Barlow was a charter member of Issaquah Valley Grange and an active worker for many years in the Finnish Congregational church.
Surviving are his wife, Wilhemina; two sons, Paul and Elvin, both of Issaquah; one daughter Mrs. Marie Chandler of Seattle; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Vic Tuomala of Issaquah, Mrs. Violet Johnson of Portland, Oregon, and two sisters in Finland.
Services are under the direction of the Issaquah Funeral Home.

05 July 1928, Issaquah Press: MISS MARIE BARLOW MARRIED IN SEATTLE
The marriage of Miss Marie Barlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Barlow of Issaquah, to Mr. Joseph Chandler, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Chandler of Walla Walla, was quietly solemnized in Seattle Tuesday, July 3, 1928 with Dr. Crowther of the University Methodist church officiating.
Immediately after the wedding the young couple left for a wedding trip of a month and a half in Eastern Washington and Seaside and will then return to LaConner, Washington where both will teach in the high school.
Mrs. Chandler is a U.of W. graduate (1925) where she was a member of Omicron Nu, Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Chandler received his degree from W.S.C. (1925). He was affiliated with the Sigma Nu fraternity and for three yeas was a member of the varsity basketball team.

21 August 1941, Issaquah Press: PAUL BARLOW GIVEN SURPRISE WEDDING PARTY
Relatives and friends gathered at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. William Barlow on Lake Sammamish Sunday afternoon, holding a surprise wedding party in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Barlow, recently married.
A delicious lunch was served to over one hundred and fifty guests. Serving were Mesdames Maria Karvia, Vic Tuomala, Mattie Jusilla, Ed Erickson, Vern Bradley, Andrew Erickson, Tom Haro and H. Johnson, assisted by Mesdames Larry Nikko, Earl Hill, Ed Nikko, Einar Mattila and Misses Ester and Ackto Peltola.
The honor guests were presented a glass covered bowl filled with paper dollar bills.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chandler and children, Mrs. Dorothy Barlow and children, and Mrs. Hailstone arrived from vacation trips in time for the occasion.

Is he a son? I cannot find any kind of military, death or birth record for this person.

ELVIN A. BARLOW, born 10 October 1913 in Washington, [SSDI] and died 29 January 2001 in Issaquah, King Co Washington. [SSDI,FG]
He married CLARA D. [FLEISHER] LANE on 16 October 1950 in King Co Washington. [MR] She was born 30 June 1908, [SSDI] and died 17 August 1998 in Issaquah, King Co Washington. [SSDI,FG]

Elvin was consistently shown in the Issaquah Press as an honor student. Photo is his senior picture, 1930-1931

28 February 1952, Issaquah Press: Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Barlow entertained at a barbeque dinner in their home Saturday evening. Mrs. Barlow prepared the entire meal over the grill and barbeque of the new fireplace in the home overlooking Lake Sammamish. Guests included messers. and mesdames Myles Lyndsay, Stuart Woodside, Theodore Erickson, PAUL BARLOW, Frank Stickney, Harold Lyne, Walt Karvia, Leonard Bicknell of Seattle, and MISS PAT LANE, Mrs. Barlow's daughter.

23 February 1961, Issaquah Press: MRS. EVERETT FLEISHER
Anna Violet Fleisher, mother of Mrs. Elvin Barlow, passed away Tuesday morning at Swedish Hospital. Services will be held at Georgetown Funeral Home on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., followed by cremation.
Mrs. Fleisher was born in Seattle on March 30, 1889 and was graduated from Old B___ high school in 1905.
Survived by two daughters, Mrs. William McMillan and Mrs. Elvin Barlow.
[Question: Was Clara's maiden name Fleisher...note that her daughters name is Miss Pat Lane in the previous article]

JOSEPHINE BARLOW2 was born 20 July 1881 in Finland, [IHS,C] and died 17 September 1964 in Bellevue, King Co Washington. [IHS] She immigrated to America with her family in 1888 according to the 1920 and 1930 census.

She married 1) ALFRED ANDES KEROLA on 03 August 1901. [MR] He was born 12 October 1874 in Finland, [IHS,NR,WWI] and died 08 February 1923 in Seattle, King Co Washington. [IHS,DR]
She married 2) VICTOR JOHN TUOMALA on 29 July 1929. [IHS,MR] The son of Charles Tuolmala and his wife Maria, [DR] he was born 02 September 1879 in Lapua, Finland, [NR,WWIDR,WWIIDR] and died 14 November 1957 in Seattle King Co Washington, at the age of 78. [DR]

July 25, 1963, Issaquah Press: NEIGHBOR HONORED. The former neighbors of MRS. JOSEPHINE TUOMALA, long time Issaquah resident, honored her on her 81rst birthday Monday at her present residence in Issaquah Villa. All are members of an informal Good's Corner area birthday club Tea and cake were served by the ladies. Present were Mary E. Hanson, Edith Kilby and Allen, Peechie Stefani, Hilma Wakkuri, Minnie Treit, Nola Emrick, Ellen Nikko, Margaret Hanson, Dorothy Giberson, and Esther Bergsma. 09 February 1923, Issaquah Press: ALFRED KEROLA KILLED IN MINE Mr. Alfred Kerola, while working in the Harris mine, met with an accident Wednesday afternoon receiving injuries which resulted in his death about 5 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Kerola was caught under rocks caving in a nd was severely crushed about the hips and lower abdomen. He was taken to the Swedish Hospital, Seattle, where he passed away without regaining consciousness. Mr. Kerola was born in Finland 48 years ago. Since coming to Issaquah he secured a little home down by the lake where the family has since lived. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Josephine Kerola, a son, Alvin, and a daughter, Miss Viola. Mr. F.A. Fisher brought the body here yesterday and will handle the funeral, which will be held from the Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m., with interment at Hillside Cemetery.

It is authentically reported that Vern Bradley, popular Master of the local Grange, has forsaken the rank of single blessedness and is buying the cigars this morning. The other contracting party is an equally popular young lady of the district, Miss Viola Kerola. The best wishes of The Press to Viola and Vern.

He married DOROTHEA / DOROTHY THORNTON / HAILSTONE on 30 August 1924 in King Co Washington. [MR] Her death record shows her father's name as THORNTON, and her mother's name is NELLIE WILDS, [shown as Nellie Hailstone on the shared tombstone of Theodore, Dorothy and Nellie. Dorothy was born 08 November 1903 in England, [IHS,FG,DR,C] and died 22 February 1956 in Issaquah, King Co Washington, at 52 years of age of leukemia. [DR,FG,IHS]

31 October 1919, Issaquah Press: The musical program at the PTA was a great success. Theodore Barlow and Minnie Erickson gave a violin duet accompanied by Marie Barlow.

18 December 1930, Issaquah Press: Theodore Barlow is suffering from a nervous breakdown, caused by overwork and being gassed by carbon monoxide about 3 weeks ago. He is now in a sanitarium for complete recovery for a week or 10 days.

19 March 1931, Issaquah Press: Change Made at Ideal Auto Service. Ill health forces Theo Barlow to sell interest in local auto services....

	18 July 1935, Issaquah Press: Bruce Barlow Injured in Fall From Ladder: Bruce Barlow, son of Mrs. Dorothy Barlow, received a slight fracture of the skull last Saturday morning while at play at the home of his grandfather, J.W. Barlow, when he slipped and fell off a ladder, striking his head on a concrete floor. He is in the Seattle General Hospital.
