Leona Muckelroy is a major contributor to Barlow Genealogy. She contributed all of the documents shown in this genealogy. Her interest in this particular family is with 'Katie Barlow', who's age puts her into the correct time-frame and place, to be Leona's birthmother, though other Katie Barlow's found during her years of research also fit that criteria. Please take the time to read of Leona's plight by clicking on this link |
| 1. | JAMES W. BARLOW1 was born in Ireland on 17 March 1823, and died February 18, 1908 in Cherryvale, Montgomery Co Kansas. He is buried in a Chetopa, Labette Co Kansas Cemetery -- Death Record -- His father was born in England and his mother, in Ireland James wife, MARY ELLEN, was born around 1825 in Ireland and died October 18, 1918 in St. Louis, St Louis Co Missouri. She is also buried in Chetopa, Labette Co Kansas. Both of her parents were born in Ireland |
| He immigrated to America before 1858, when a daughter was born in Pennsylvania. The 1900 census shows that they immigrated in 1861, though they were enumerated in an 1860 census, and had a 2 year old daughter, born in the US. I have not located him on a ships passenger list at this time. |

The body will be shipped to Chetopa this evening on the 5:40 train and the funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. He was born in England and came to this country where he toiled as a tiller of soil until late years when he has been living a retired life with his children to whom our heartfelt sympathy is extended. |

| Doniphan County, bordered by Missouri, and Nebraska, was organized on September 15, 1855, though Kansas did not become a state until 1861. I do not find a James Barlow in the index for the 1859 state census of Kansas, but do show a J.H. Barlow. However, I do not have a copy or transcription of that record, so it is not possible to know if he may be the same. |

| Notes and observations of Susan BARLOW Holmes research: While searching census records, 1870, a Martha Barlow lives in Doniphan Co Kansas, her birth is shown to be in Illinois, and a domestic servant in the home is shown as Julia Barlow, age 60, born in Ireland. I believe that Martha is either a sister, or more probably, a sister in law of James, and that Julia could very well be his mother. Martha has living in her household, Mary E. Barlow, age 8, John N. Barlow, age 6, and James E. Barlow, age 3, all born in Kansas. I believe that John N. and James E. Barlow are the same as the nephews living in James home in 1880. Notice that the 1880 census shows these boys mother to be born in Missouri, (instead of Illinois), and their father born in Ireland. I feel sure the father would have been a sibling of James. The year of immigration, per the 1900 census, is in error; they are living in Kansas in the 1860 census, and their daughter, Mary, was born in the U.S., c1858. Her place of birth is in question, the 1860 census shows Pennsylvania, while the 1870 census shows Illinois. Checking both of these states, may lead to other branches of this family. A search of immigration records will prove the year of arrival from England, and where they embarked, thus leading to a better indication of their migrations, and might help to locate the actual place of Mary's birth, as well as in aiding your research of the family prior to arriving in the U.S. In 1900, I find Julia Barlow, age 75, born February 1825 in Ireland, immigrated to America in 1860 (same year as James), and she is the mother-in-law in the home of Richard and Cecilia Horrigan, St Joseph, Buchanan Co Missouri. I did not find Julia in an 1880 census though. A Civil War record located shows: James Barlow Co L 9th KS Militia Infantry, called into service October 09, 1864, torepel Price's invasion, disbanded October 29, 1864. Pension application no. 1044008 filed August 01, 1891, resident Kansas. Ordering this application might prove to be helpful if it is indeed this James. Other James Barlow's who entered service in Missouri should also be considered. |
| Children of James and Mary are: |
| 2 i. | PATRICK BARLOW was born c1851 in England. |
| ii. | JOHN BARLOW was born c1853 in England, and died before 1911, perhaps before 1900, as I could not locate him in a 1900 census. |
| iii. | MARY BARLOW was born c1858 in either Pennsylvania or Illinois. She is no longer in the home in 1880, she has probably married. |
| 3 iv. | JAMES 'JIM' BARLOW, JR. was born May 10, 1860 in Kansas, and died in 1920. |
| 4 v. | EDWARD H.L. 'ED' BARLOW was born c1865 in Kansas, died before 1911 |
| vi. | THOMAS H. BARLOW was born April 13, 1865 or 70 in Kansas, and died intestate on August 17, 1911 in Richmond, Ray Co Missouri. His estate was not settled until September 1913. He married DOLLIE, who was born June 04, 1864, and died March 12, 1908. According to probate records, they had no children. |

Tombstone Photo In 1913, Sarah divorced James, and was married twice more: 2.) Mr. Clark, and 3.) Mr. Cottew |
| Donald Wardlow writes: My Grandfather (according to family story) was conceived in Ireland and born in USA, but according to most dates in other genealogy dates does not work out. There was an other story that Jim and Mary had a baby son crawling aboard ship on the way over and cooks carrying hot water stumbled and spilled it on him and he was crippled for life. Note from Susan: After searching the census records, I would think that John was more probably the child who was on board the ship as a toddler and if he were crippled, it might be the reason he was still at home in the 1880 census at age 27. |

| 8 vi. | LAURA BARLOW, born was born August 21, 1902 in Oklahoma, and died May 21, 1977 in Webb City, Jasper Co Missouri | |
Per Jim (above) and Ed, (below) sons of James and Mary Ellen, I believe this story is about them, found in fragments from: Gray's Doniphan County history: A record of the happenings of half a hundred years. By P.L. Gray. Bendena, Kan: The Roycroft Press, 1905 The "Barlow Boys," acquired widespread notoriety during the early eighties by their bad behavior in both Doniphan and Brown Counties. They were hard drinkers and reckless shooters. Raid after raid was made by them on the small towns. For a time they were permitted to pay their fines and and go free; but the long suffering public lost its patience and the "toughs" were brought to time. The fact that they were very cowards was proved one day in Severance when a man named Miller took a few stones and battered and scattered the four of them. On the evening of April 18, 1883, they made a raid on Normanville, demanding liquor which Mr. Normile had been in the custom of keeping in his small grocery store in a room adjoining the room in which the post office was kept. They got into a row with William Normile. Mrs. Normile, his mother, came to his assistance, attempting to hold the door shut to keep out the assailants, when ,the boys" began firing their pistols into the door and windows. One ball passed through Mrs. Normile's ear and lodged in her head. They ended by robbing the post office of money and stamps. A day or two after this they were arrested. The "boys" - Jim, and Ed. - made no resistance. Later they were handed over to the government authorities. The eastern papers made much of the boys, classing them with the James Boys and giving extended and glowing, but greatly exaggerated accounts of their depredations. The Police Gazette, the literary vulture, printed their pictures with a highly colored account of the raid on Normanville, and we recollect that many copies of the paper were purchased and read by people wishing to see how "the Boys" appeared in print. |
| 4. | EDWARD H.L. BARLOW was born c1865 in Kansas, died before 1911. He married LEETIE THOMPSON. |
| A letter from Betty Gaskin, dated Feb 2001, states that she is the daughter of Harry Edward Barlow. She writes: "My father was separated from family at age 8. His father took him and another boy with him to go sign up on rolls, he left them with the Barlow family in Miami, Ottawa Co Oklahoma and went on alone. My father thought he had been sold to the Indians for a pony and ran away. His brother was later sent to St. Louis and raised by their grandmother and aunt there." Betty also tells that the family was Catholic and suggests there may be church records to further research the family. Seeing that Edward had "gone to sign up on the rolls" makes me wonder if the family may have been of Indian descent." |

| From Wardlow Genealogy contributed by Donald Wardlow: After losing his father in 1929, and his oldest son Jerome in 1931, John moved his family from the farm in Jasper Co Missouri to Webb City, Missouri in the spring of 1932. He worked underground in the lead and zinc mines until the end of World War II, when most mines were closed due to the end of government subsidies. Their children grown, John and Laura moved to Salida, Stanislaus Co California in 1946, where John worked on a large fruit and almond ranch. In 1952 they returned to Webb City, Missouri and John worked as caretaker of the Webb City Cemetery until contracting cancer from which he died in 1967. John never enjoyed the luxury of retirement. He was a very honest and proud man, and took great pride in his family. John and Laura are buried in Pine Cemetery, Jasper Co Missouri by his mother and father. All children were born in Duvall Township, Jasper Co Missouri, most were born on the family farm. |
