Most of the Barlow family is from my own research using census, cemetery, and other online resources for genealogy. I have worked on an off with the family of William F. Barlow for years, and with , whom I had earlier worked with.   I have had help with allied families of the Barlow's, the Lamkin/Lampkin family is mostly from the research of , and much of the Robinson family comes from the Rootsweb World Connect Project, and I have added as many census records to document as much as possible.   Paula Grant helped with names and dates of William H. Barlow's family. Jerry McKelvey at Nevada Co Genealogy provided several obituaries which aid in family names and those elusive married daughters. MILLS / MILES BARLOW, born c1784 -90 in Virginia, and died at 78 years.

He married LOTTY.  

A picture showing the genealogy of much of this family was found in the home of ANNIE BARLOW GREER (daughter of Albert) and photographed by Jerry McKelvy who does genealogy for Nevada Co and sent a copy to me.  This genealogy is not official proof of the following, but in my mind, it proves my thoughts that Miles was the father of the following children, whom I only thought to be siblings, with the exception of James R. It appears from this that Thomas may be Lucinda's husband.   The papers shows 'Milzy' to be her great-great grandfather, who I believe to be Miles.  She writes that he was born in Virginia, died at age 78, and was blind for 30 years before his death.    Copy of genealogy paper found in the home of Annie Barlow Greer after her death in 2006, it is not known the age of the paper, but it appears quite old.

Miles may be a brother of John Barlow of Dallas Co and Wilcox Co Alabama, or at least related, and I believe both will be members of the Isle of Wight Virginia Barlow families.   A DNA test by a male BARLOW member of these families can prove that theory, but will not find the exact relationship.

Searching for Miles in 1860, I find an M. Barlow, age 76, birthplace unknown, living in Ouachita Co Arkansas with E.O. Barlow, age 28, who was born in Alabama.  I feel sure this will be Miles and his son Elijah.               Census Image

MARTHA BARLOW, born c1826 in Alabama.      She married ELIJAH MOSLEY on January 04, 1843 in Monroe Co Alabama.

1870 census of Missouri, Lone Grove, Ouachita Co Arkansas, and she was listed as head of household, and all of her children were shown with only initials. Martha was 44, born in Alabama, W.E. Mosley, daughter, age 20, born in Alabama, S.J. Mosley, daughter, age 18, born in Alabama, M.J. Mosley, daughter, age 16, born in Arkansas, N.E. Mosley, daughter, age 14, born in Arkansas, and L.D. SARAH A. 'SALLY' BARLOW2, born November 24, 1837 in Wilcox Co Alabama, and died February 09, 1902 in Ouachita Co Arkansas, burial in Bell Cemetery, Ouachita Co Arkansas.

WILLIAM FRANCIS 'BILLY' BARLOW2, perhaps a son of Miles/Mills and Lottie Barlow, was born c1823 in Alabama, and died approximately 1892-93, probably in Polk Co Arkansas.

He married NANCY RACHEL KESSEE HICKS in 1850, Camden, Ouachita Co Arkansas.    The daughter of James A. Hicks and Elizabeth Kessee, she was born c1835, and died after 1900, probably before 1910.

It only shows owning land in Ouachita Co 1852       Land records in Magnolia, Columbia Co Arkansas, William bought land from James A. Hicks in 1866    William sold land in Columbia County in 1872     Polk County land records show him to still own land as late as 1890

In 1870, James A. Barlow, age 17 is a student in the Deaf School in Little Rock, Pulaski Co Arkansas, - Census Image - but he is also listed his family in Columbia Co

The second James, John J. (Joseph), William H., and Marie are children of E.O. and Mary Barlow, who were listed in the 1860 census of Ouachita Co Arkansas, a brother of William.  

Nancy and her daughter, Julia sold land to James A. Barlow (son/brother) on May 31, 1893  Bk X / Pg 130  Record filed at the Court House in Mena, Polk Cp Arkansas. 

In 1900, William is deceased and Nancy lives with her son, James.  She states that she had 3 children and only 1 is living, so apparently she and William had a child who died in infancy.  I do not understand why Julia would be listed as deceased, as she was clearly living when she was enumerated on 13 July 1900.     Census Image

ELIJAH O. BARLOW2, born c1832 in Alabama, and died in 1863 from measles, while serving in the Civil War in Little Rock, Pulaski Co Arkansas. (probably after September)  Annie Barlow Greer shows that he is buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery in Little Rock, Pulaski Co Arkansas, but apparently a tombstone does not exist.  (Note: Find out how to get a free headstone for your veteran)

He married MARY ANN JACKSON.  She was born 1830, and died in 1865, shown by Annie Barlow Greer to be buried in Bluff City Cemetery, Bluff City, Nevada Co Arkansas, apparently no tombstone exists.

In 1870, James (18), John J. [Joseph] (14), William (11) are living in the home of William F. and Nancy Barlow, as well as 7 year old Maria.  Fannie may be deceased or even married.       Census Image

Elijah O. Barlow Civil War Service Record: Age 20. Enlisted 14 June 1862 at Red Hill, Arkansas, died at Little Rock, Arkansas, date not shown. Claim filed 23 May 1863 by Mary A Barlow, widow.   (Note:  A copy of this pension may be found on N.A.R.A.)   

In the first weeks of September, 1863, the 33rd served in the Little Rock defenses at present-day North Little Rock. After General Price abandoned Little Rock, the 33rd joined the retreat down the Southwest Trail to Benton and on to the vicinity of Arkadelphia, while they spent the winter of 1863.

She married GEORGE L. LAMKINS/LAMKIN.  He was born July 23, 1836 in Wilcox Co Alabama, and died September 06, 1878 in Ouachita Co Arkansas, burial in Bell Cemetery, Ouachita Co Arkansas.

THOMAS BARLOW, born in ____ Alabama and died in the Mexican War  (1846-1848) according to Annie Barlow Greer's genealogy sheet.  In Edson Barlow's military records, the only Thomas I can find who served in the Mexican War is Thomas W. Barlow, who was a private in Company F, 1st Texas, Foot Riflemen. It is possible this may be him, or Edson's list may not be complete.

He married LUCINDA J. JONES.    Found on Rootsweb that Lucinda was the daughter of John Lewis Jones and Elizabeth Meador.

I could not locate this family in an 1870 census in Arkansas or any other state, the only Barlow in Ouachita Co is a black man, Thomas Barlow and his family, he was born in Alabama, and may have been a slave of one of these families.  

1880 Nevada Co, in the home of Thomas Barlow, age 26, his mother is shown to be Frances, her age 43, born in Alabama.   His brother, Elijah, age 24 is also in the household.   I feel sure this is the same family, but can't understand why his mother is called Frances.       Census Image

THOMAS L. BARLOW3, born September 24, 1853 in Arkansas, and died 25 January 1924, (cemetery record) burial in Bluff City Cemetery, Bluff City, Nevada Co Arkansas. 

JULIA FRANCES BARLOW3, daughter of William Francis Barlow and Nancy Kessee Hicks, was born February 11, 1852 in Arkansas, and died February 19, 1932 in Parker, LaPaz Co Arizona

She married in Columbia county, on the 1st inst., Mr. THOMAS W. ROBINSON   Newspaper dated 1867, month not known.  The son of Washington Bennett Roberson and Rachael Vining Vardaman, he was born December 10, 1844 in Fayetteville, Talladega Co Alabama, and died March 16, 1891, burial in Old Dallas Cemetery, Polk Co Arkansas.  

Information from William Hosey, RWWC:   Changed spelling of name to Robinson during Civil War due to payroll problems with the number of Thomas Robersons in the service.

Robinson to Barlow: This is to certify that I, Samuel Morris, a Minister in the Methodist and Church South did on the first day of the present month Solemnize the rites of Matrimony between Thomas W. Robinson and Julia F. Barlow both of lawful age and both of Columbia County Ark.
The above Marriage Solemnize according to the rules and usage of the Church of which I am a Minister. My credentials having been recorded in the clerks office in Paroclifta (sic) Sevier County, Arkansas.

GEORGE WASHINGTON ROBINSON, born March 04, 1881 in Polk Co Arkansas, and died September 06, 1954 in Grants Pass, Josephine Co Oregon 

JAMES A. BARLOW, son of William Francis Barlow and Nancy Kessee Hicks, was born October 1852 in Arkansas, and died after 1930.   Note that either his or Julia's year of birth may be incorrect, or else Nancy became pregnant immediately after Julia's birth and gave birth to James in her 8th mo of pregnancy.

He married MARTHA OWENS.  The daughter of  William Jackson Owens and and Fannie Davis, she was born September 1853 in Arkansas, and probably died before the 1920 census.

GEORGE HICKS BARLOW, born August 21, 1880 in Arkansas.  

In 1920, Hicks Barlow, age 39, (single) and Benjamin, (married) age 33, both born in Arkansas, are boarders in the Hattie Yencer home in El Paso, El Paso Co Texas      Census Image       I did not locate him again in a 1930 census.

I did not locate him in a 1910 census, but in 1920 he is in El Paso with his brother, Hicks, a lodger in the home of Hattie Yencer, see above.   I did not locate him again in a 1930 census

JAMES O. BARLOW3, son of Elijah O. Barlow and Mary, was born January 09, 1852 in Alabama or Arkansas [1900 census shows January 1857, but it is more likely 1852], and died April 1914 in Shady, Polk Co Arkansas at which time Mandy, a widow is living with her sister, Sarah Lawrence.

He married 1) CYNTHIA H. BURLESON 16 March 1875 in Nevada Co Arkansas.  She probably died between 1883-1896.
He married 2) SALITA AMANDA 'MANDY' LAWRENCE on 02 June 1896 in Polk Co Arkansas.

The 1910 census shows Mandy and James had 3 living children, but I do not know their names.  I think that may be an error, and perhaps that 3 is the total number of Barlow children living in this family.

JOHN JOSEPH 'JJ' BARLOW3, son of Elijah O. Barlow and Mary, was born Apri 12, 1856 in Wilcox Co Alabama, and died January 03, 1940 in Houston, Harris Co Texas, burial in an unmarked grave in Peeble Cemetery, Livingston, Polk Co Texas [Cemetery records, Polk Co Genealogy]    The 1900 census as well as his death certificate shows his birth year as 1853.    Death Certificate  

He married MARGARET ' MAGGIE' HOUCK c1881 in Texas.  The daughter of Harvey Houck and C____ Huffman, she was born February 09, 1865 and died August 09, 1928, burial in Israel Cemetery, Livingston, Polk Co Texas   *I believe that Israel Cemetery is the same as Peebles Cemetery, being the old section. In 1880, Joe Barlow, age 22, is living in the Godbold home in Columbia Co Arkansas.    Census Image   
Anne Barlow Greer's sheet says of Joe, transcribed as written, (my notes in parenthesis): Uncle Billie (William F. Barlow) carried grandpa (Lige) and uncle Joe to Columbia Co. Magnolia - in 1865. Stayer there till 12 & 15 and run away to Camden. Uncle Joe went back to Uncle Billie's and stayed another year. Then went to Mrs. God Bolls (Godbold) and stayed 13 years. Farming and staying in Magnolia a year with Uncle Tom Mullins. Joined the Masons in Magnolia, went from there to Colorado and stayed for 6 or 7 months. Got on to Santa Fee, went to Houston and met Colonel Grant there, went with him to Walker Co. and stayed there 18 years, married there.

ETHEL BARLOW4, born October 18, 1884, and died June 18, 1920 in Texas, burial in Peebles Cemetery, Livingston, Polk Co Texas
She married LAMON NETTLES, and was divorced by the 1920 census, and she died soon thereafter.  Her tombstone shows her name as Barlow. Their children, Susie and Jabe Nettles were raised b y their gr-grandfather, Joseph, and took the Barlow surname.  (Information Nov 2012 from Charles Holden)   In this case, if Jabe did take the DNA test for the Barlow surname, he would not be a match for the surname.

Joseph C. Barlow departed this life on November 16, 1924 at the age of 33 years. His home was near Bluff City.
He obeyed the gospel at an early age at Bluff City and lived a very consistent Christian ever "growing in the grace and knowledge of the truth and looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith."
He was married on December 30, 1916 to sister Tula Dawson, daughter of Bro. Oscar Dawson, deceased. She was a devoted companion and devout Christian.
Bro. and Sis. Barlow moved near Prescott 5 years ago and attended services at Hickory Grove until Oct. 1922, at which time a movement was started to restore primitive Christianity to Prescott. This resulted in the establishment of a congregation of disciples now numbering about 70. Bro. Barlow, being an excellent singer, was asked to assist a song leader and continued in which position he filled with credit to himself and the church.
Bro. A.J. Copeland spoke words of comfort and consolation to the bereaved friends and relatives.

He married RUTH M. IRVIN on February 21, 1921.  She was born December 10, 1902, and died August 30, 1974 in Nevada Co Arkansas.   Both are buried in DeAnn Cemetery, Nevada Co Arkansas.

Mrs. Ruth Irvin Barlow, age 72, died Friday, August 30, at the Nevada County Hospital. Mrs. Barlow was a lifelong resident of Nevada County.
Survivors include her husband, Jeff D. Barlow; one brother, E.B. Johnson of Prescott; four sisters, Mrs. Olie Otwell, and Mrs. May Johnson, both of Prescott, Mrs. Clyde Chomwell of Little Rock and Mrs. William Sarrett of North Little Rock.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Prescott Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jerry Westmoreland, Rev. Ray Hines and Rev. Harlon Wicker officiating. Burial was in DeAnne Cemetery under the direction of Cornish Mortuary.
Pallbearers were Mack Howell, Ellis Johnson, L. C. Revis, Leonard Wesson, Leonard Hart, and Tommy Kirk.

The census taker apparently was playing games with the census in Mena.  Cadmus and Martha are enumerated twice, the birthdates, are different in each, as well as Cadmus brother, James A. who was also enumerated twice with conflicting dates, birthplaces, etc.

He married ELVALINA L.  WILLIAMS on November 23, 1916.    The daughter of Mack Williams and Nancy Ware, she was born October 25, 1883 in Okalona Arkansas, and died April 05, 1980.  Both buried in Bluff City Cemetery, Bluff City, Nevada Co Arkansas

The old home place was located on the Lackland Springs Rd, but in his later years the family lived in the old house which still stands across from the Arkansas Forestry Commission seed orchard near Bluff City. This house is probably the oldest house left in the area around Bluff City and was recently renovated by a grandson following damage by a severe wind storm.  Mr. Barlow was an active member of the Gum Grove Church of Christ.    Nevada Co Genealogy, 2006

He married MINNIE O. MOORE   After Albert’s death, Minnie remarried to Douglas Greening and lived west of Camden in the Two Bayou community. She is buried in  Bluff City Cemetery, [Nevada Co Genealogy] apparently no stone exists. 

BARLOW, ALBERT age 44; born 11-29-1893; died 7-12-1938 after being hit by lightning while plowing in field. He married BESSIE M. GRIFFITH.   The daughter of John Griffith and his wife Adella, she was born January 06, 1896 in Texas, and died January 02, 1983 in Arkansas. Both are buried in Bluff City Cemetery, Bluff City Nevada Co Arkansas. 

In his later years Mr. and Mrs. Barlow lived about five miles north of Morris on the Cale Road. He was an active member of the Church of Christ and known for his song leading ability.   Nevada Co Genealogy, 2006

James Wallace Barlow, a lifelong resident of Nevada County, died Thursday, December 10 at home after an extended illness. He was 76 years old, having been born on the home place July 16, 1888. He received his education in the local schools and at the Amity, Ark., High School and the College of the Ozarks at Clarksville. He was married June 24, 1917 to Miss Carrie Elizabeth Lowdermilk, also of Nevada County.
During his early career Mr. Barlow worked for the U.S. Government in Washington D.C., and in the Portland, Oregon shipyards. Since 1918 he was engaged in farming on the homeplace until his retirement several years ago. He served as a member of the Bluff City school board several yeas. Mr. Barlow was a member of the New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Paul Barlow of Magnolia and Thomas Lewis Barlow of Prescott; two daughter, Mrs. Jack Page of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Stell Meador of Bartlesville, Okla., a sister, Mrs. Archie Ulen of Prescott and 7 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bluff City Baptist Church by Rev. Dale Gentry. Burial was in Bluff City cemetery by Cornish Funeral Service.
Pallbearers were Ollie Greer, Bill Lambert, Grady Franklin, Albert Redfern, Brad Dewoody, and James Cummings.

MRS. WALLACE BARLOW
Mrs. Carrie Lowdermilk Barlow, age 73, of Route Two, Prescott, died Tuesday, July 12, at the Nevada County Hospital. SHe was a lifelong resident of Nevada County and wa the widow of James Wallace Barlow.    She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Paul Barlow of Magnolia and Thomas L. Barlow of Prescott; two daughter, Mrs. Jack Page of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Stell Meador of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; a brother, Davis Lowdermilk of Longview, Texas; three sister, Mrs. W.V. Ellis of Prescott, Mrs. A.E. Magness of Little Rock and Mrs. J. Dan White of El Dorado and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14 at Bluff City by Rev. Dale Gentry. Burial will be in Bluff CIty Cemetery by Cornish Funeral Service.

William Aubrey Barlow, age 85, of Bluff City, died in the Nevada County Hospital on April 10. A son of Elijah and Mary Melinda Barlow, he was a lifelong resident of the Terrapin Neck Community. He was married for more than 60 years to the former Leila Dawson. He was an Elder of the Bluff City Church of Christ. He taught many singing schools and worked with several public school systems in this area and was also a retired farmer.
He is survived by a son, Dawson Barlow, of Prescott, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Burial was in Bluff City Cemetery.

James Hugh Barlow, aged 64, of Bauxite, a retired employee of the Aluminum Company of America, died September 10 at his home. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pertie Benton Barlow; two sons, Billy J. Barlow of Tulsa and Joseph H. Barlow of Bauxite, a brother, Aubrey Barlow of Prescott; a sister, Mrs. E.M. Davis of Prescott, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. September 12 at the ___ Trinity Church by Rev. Eddie ___ Cord.    Burial was at Bauxite Cemetery by Ashby Funeral Service.

I cannot determine who this might be.
J.R. Barlow, died at the age of 31 in the September 1860 mortality schedule of Ouachita Co Arkansas, along with a 2 year old, Oliver Barlow, both from typhoid fever, but neither are in an 1860 census.  Was there a hospital for typhoid where they may have been?
I thought this would be the same person, but the last land entry was dated after J.R.'s death. James R. Barlow of Ouachita Co Arkansas received land in Nevada Co Arkansas, the last one would be after James death... perhaps his heirs?

It is also possible that AVA BARLOW who married JOHN WALLACE PITTMAN may also be a member of this family. While researching this family, I came across an old query which reads: Ava Barlow b: c1814 in Georgia married John Wallace Pittman June 20, 1837 in Sumter Co Georgia. They are listed in the 1840 Lee Co Georgia, 1850 & 1860 Sumter Co Georgia, and 1860 they were in the Sumter Americus area. The family moved to Arkansas, settling in the Ouachita area shortly before the Civil War. At least two of their sons fought in the Civil War in Arkansas.   Children (as in the 1860 census) Mary age 19, Thomas W., age 17, William Henry, age 12, James Elbert, age 9 .. married Miranda Charlotte Cranford in Arkansas, later moved to Texas..., Joseph L., age 7, Samuel, age 3.   They had an older son John (11 in the 1850 census)
I have found several genealogies online of the Pittman family, all in search of Ava's parents.   Apparently all of the family moved to Texas, and I didn't find any records of them in Arkansas, other than the query, and I assume their knowledge comes from military records of the sons.
Note that the Barlow's I have researched from the Laurens and Sumter Co Georgia area have all been traced by to the Isle of Wight Virginia families.    One note of interest though is that Charles Pittman writes: I am guessing that she (Ava) is related to Solomon Barlow Council of Sumter County through his mother who was a Barlow.    Solomon Barlow Council's mother was an unknown Barlow, who was a daughter of Ralph Barlow, Ralph a son of William Barlow of Robeson Co North Carolina

There were other Barlow's in the area at the same time, that I do not believe to be related at at all to this family.  They will include the family of Moses Barlow of England / Pennsylvania, who had at least 3 hotels in the area.

An Annie / Fannie Barlow found in Polk Co Arkansas living with the Shrewsbury family is a member of the Alonzo Daniel Barlow line of Mississippi, probably unrelated to this family genealogy

Another family living in the same areas of Arkansas is that of Robert T. Barlow, they live in very close proximity to this one. Though they do have a members who show they came from Alabama, most came from Kentucky.
