1850 Rutherford Co Tennessee / Benjamin Barlow
1850 Rutherford Co Tennessee / Hinton (probably Hirton) Barlow lives only a few doors from Kendall and Cyrus

Several land deeds were found in Rutherford Co Tennessee, pertaining to the above mentioned Barlow's, and transcribed by Carole Gibson, those can be seen in the Tennessee pages of this website.

OBSERVATIONS, NOTES, and RECORDS:

DNA testing in April 2004, shows this family to be a part of the Isle of Wight Virginia Barlow family.  I use IOW because their genealogy is has the earliest research dates in this grouping.

In 2008, DNA testing has found an exact match on a 67 marker test with a member of Alfred Hirton's family and a member of William Henry Barlar's family making it inevitable that they are brothers.  Researchers show that Alfred has a brother named William, born c1815, but have no documentation, thus that Wm may be a son of Kendall, or, as we have seen before in this time period, two sons in the same family were named William. 

A family named Goff, whom it is said to have adopted 3 Barlow boys, thus the name change, research is ongoing in this matter.  Click on the Goff name to see if you might help in this research.

1.  JOHN1 BARLOW, son of William Barlow of Wake Co North Carolina.     Nothing further is known.

Ed Goff says: John Barlow or Kendall Barlow was probably the father of Alfred Hirton and William Henry.   Just which was the father of each male is something that I doubt we will ever prove but I have little doubt the the pair were the father of the two boys however it may shake out.   Since they were brothers, the DNA will always match. Given that William Henry went to Lawrence County with John, I vote for John. John and Kendall were in Wake County NC in 1820 and Rutherford County TN in 1830. There were a number of children in both households in 1830. In 1840 Kendall (Sr.) was in Rutherford (60/70 age) and listed with him on the same page in the census were 3 young families all with a 20/30 year old male as head of household. They were William (went to Gibson County), Alfred Barlow that went to MO and Kendall (Jr.) that stayed in Rutherford County. I determined the part of Rutherford County they lived in and it is rough Mountain Country.   We have good evidence that William Barlow of Wake county was the father of John and Kendall. We can trace him back to VA about 1760 possibly to Isle of Wight.

We have the application for land in 1820 by William Barlow descendants in which they name his sons as William, John and Kendall. John and Kendall went to Rutherford County and were in the 1830 census. William and sister Sarah stayed in Wake County and were there when William Barlow (SR)’s widow applied for a pension in 1845.   The two applications prove a clear trail back to Virginia.

In the 1850 census of Rutherford Co Tennessee, Jane is living w/ Rondle [Kendall] Barlow. Living only a few doors away is a William Hunt, age 25, in the home of N.H. and Susan Johns. Again, in 1860 Jane is still living with Kendall, however, she only aged 4 years:)
I located Wm. Hunt, merchant, age 45, with wife, T.J. Hunt, age 44, in 1870 Rutherford Co Tennessee, no children.  I was unable to locate them in 1880 with the correct age or any other way of proving them as this couple.

2.  ALFRED HIRTON2 BARLOW (JOHN1) was born about 1818 in Wake Co North Carolina and died February 06, 1900 in McDonald Co Missouri

He married ELIZABETH GIBSON on June 23, 1834 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.   She died in 1866 according to Gerald Housman

According to Phillip Greenlee of South Bend, Indiana, Alfred's second wife was EMMALINE PAMELA [Permelia?] WOODS, and that she mothered that last 3 shown children.   According to the following History of McDonald County, Alfred married the 'Widow MICHAEL', who mothered these children.  Is she the same as Emmaline, perhaps Woods her maiden name.  Or was the widow Michaels, Nancy E., as shown in the 1880 census?   He apparently married a third time to NANCY E.

'History of McDonald County'

Apparently a first hand account, thus verifying the place of birth as Wake Co NC.  A.H. Barlow, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this county, was born near Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1818. When he was quite a small boy his parents moved to Tennessee where they died. He came to Neosho in 1841, and has lived in Newton and McDonald Counties ever since. He recieved his education at home, studying at night by light of pine knots. He married Elizabeth Gibson in Tennessee, they had twelve children, four of whom are dead. Of the living, two are in Colorado, two in the Chocktaw Nation, one in Kansas, one at Neosho, one at Stella, and one near Miami, I.T. Some years after the death of his first wife he married the widow Michael of Newton County. The have three children all living. One at Anderson, one in Arkansas and one in Colorado. Mr Barlow was originally a Whig, and says he sticks to it yet, but voted for Byran last fall. He has been a carpenter, cabinet maker and mill wright. During the war he lived on a small farm near Neosho most of the time, but finally went to Neosho and followed the Union Army. During the war his house and fences were all burnt, but they caught from the forest fires. He says the Rebels treated him well and he never had an enemy in his life.

Elizabeth Gibson is believed to have been Cherokee Indian.   Most Cherokee families took English names

History of the Cherokee Indians - Old Families and Their Genealogy

In 1892, Emmet Starr, a Cherokee physician, began to put pen-to-paper on the genealogy of old Cherokee families. He included this genealogy in his monumental book "History of the Cherokee People."   The genealogy portion of his book is excerpted and is available here.

This genealogy contains over 8,544 names and goes back as far as 1625, although most of the genealogy centers from the 1770's to the mid-1800's. Very little collateral information is given, ie, no birth or death dates, geographical information, etc. except for a very scant few of the families. This genealogy is in essence simply lineal descents and relationships.

Carole Gibson has spent many hours of research trying to prove the parentage of Elizabeth Gibson, and in March 2005, she was rewarded with the answer in the following sources:

James Gibson and brother, Samuel, moved to Dyer Co., TN. From the  census records it appears Samuel never married. James married 1st or maybe 2nd Izella -- (possibly Isabelle).

Here's what we've got:

1820 census Rutherford Co Tennessee, 1830 census Rutherford Co Tennessee, 1840 census Dyer Co Tennessee p. 106, 1850 census District 10, Dyer Co Tennessee p. 211 --  James died before 1860 -- 1860 census (Izella), District 10, Dyer Co Tennessee p. 387, 1870 census District 10, Dyer Co Tennessee p.154b, 1880 census District 4, Dyer Co Tennessee p. 80a; living with I. Bergie and Catherine.

From the census records, we can figure James was born about 1786 in North Carolina, Samuel was born about 1783 in North Carolina, and died before 1870 Dyer Co Tennessee, and Izella was born about 1808 in Tennessee, and died after 1870.

From the Deed books of Dyer Co.,: Book L, page 144, there is a Chancery  Court Case in which it names James and Izella Gibson's children: Thomas R. Burgie and Sallie Burgie, his wife; William M. Tipton and Lucinda Tipton, his wife; John Finley and Malinda Finley, his wife; Alfred Barlow and Elizabeth Barlow, his wife; Thomas J. Gibson, Nancy Gibson, (later married Bellfield Burgie); Izella Gibson, Martha Gibson Ann, Eliza Gibson, James Gibson, and Margaret Gibson.

In the name of God Amen: I James Gibson of the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following. I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Elizabeth Barlow a feather bed and furniture. I give and bequeath unto my daughters, Polly Henderson and Betsey Patterson fifty dollars each to be paid in cash at my decease by my son Matthew unto whom I give and bequeath all and every Real and personal property of which I may die possessed of, and in particular a note of hand executed by my said son Matthew in my favor for two hundred and odd dollars which was put by me into the hands of my son James for sake keeping. ­ And it is my will that the said note be null void and of no effect, in Law or Equity against my said son Matthew, he being bound for the payment of the said sum of fifty dollars to each of my forenamed two daughters at my decease. And I hereby appoint my son Matthew my sole executor to this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of January A.D. 1835.

They live next door to a Moses Gibson, his age is 20-30. Also living close are William and (2) Kendall Barlow. Also living in Rutherford Co are a Benjamin and Lavinia Barlow.

Susan Barlow Holmes / thoughts and research:
Although this is not my family, as I post and search census records, I too, come up with lots of indiscrepancies and questions.
Confusion sets in with the 1880 census showing Nancy E. as wife! Emaline has not died, in 1900 she is with her son, Isaac L. Barlow living in Arkansas, shown as 78 year old, Permelia E., widow, 4 children born, 3 living. Again in 1910 Benton Co Arkansas, she is shown as Emma, and living still with her son Isaac. So did Alfred and Permelia divorce, and who is Nancy E?

14.  ALFRED GRIFFIS BARLOW born about 1853 [Find-a-grave] in Missouri, and died in 1908 in Indianola, Pittsburg Co Oklahoma. 

HENRY FRANK BARLOW born February 12, 1858 in McDonald Co Missouri, and died January 13, 1927 in Montrose, Colorado.
He married MARY PAUL on December 25, 1881 in McDonald Co Missouri.

History of Newton, Lawrence, Barry and MacDonald County, Missouri   Goodspeed Publishing Co, 1888 page 790:
H.F. Barlow and J.B. (John Bell) Barlow were in business in Indian Spring, MacDonald Co Missouri
In 1880, Henry, age 22 was living in Logan Co Arkansas with Willis S. Barlow.   I was unable to locate him in the 1900 census. 

I have not been able to find any William Barlow, with any spelling, in the 1860 census of the U.S. to fit the age range of this William.  Nor was I able to locate them under Elizabeth or Thomas name.

4.  JOHN J.2 BARLOW (JOHN1) was born on October 08, 1819 in North Carolina

John J. and his brother Alfred, were cabinet makers.  Sometime before the Civil War, John J. became a physician. He was the first physician that Neosha ever had and he had never attended medical school.  He died in Newton Co Missouri in August 09, 1888, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosha Newton Co Missouri in the Barlow Family Plot. 

He married 1) NAOMI WILLIAMS LEE, date and place unknown. The daughter of Ephraim Wilson Lee and Nancy Brooks Williams Lee, she was born December 08, 1821 in Jackson Co Tennessee, and died in 1843, burial place unknown.
He married AVALINE T. PRICE in 1847. The daughter of Campbell Price, she was born October 1827 in Tennessee, died April 20, 1915, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosha Newton Co Missouri in the Barlow Family Plot.

Leah Chauvin sends the following:  It has only recently been learned that John J. Barlow was married prior to Avaline.  Thomas Ivan Barlow sent his son, Jack Lacour Barlow (Sr) a letter when the son was quite young.  His exact words were "I copyed this just like it was in the old family bible that your granddady had.  Noana W. Barlow, born Dec. 9, 1821.  Mary J. Barlow, born Dec 21, 1841"  There was no record of the death of Noana or Mary Barlow's death.  The Bible in quoted was owned by Thomas Hart and his wife, Rebecca Cotterman.  When Rebecca died in 1921, Thomas Hart retained ownership of the Bible which was destroyed in a house fire in 1938. Thomas Hart bought a replacement Bible but made no reference to the first wife and daughter, probably because he had forgotten due to his increasing age.

Article about Neosha Congregation of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1840-41
Dr. Barlow was known to dress in knee-breeches, and black stockling, with a certain calico blouse and equally peculiar hat. One occasion he attended religious services at Hickory Creek School House, ostensibly for the sake of taking part in the singing, which he could do very well, but really to win notoriety. He was asked by Elder Hearrell why he went in such a dress, when he replied, "Well, I want to bring myself into notice. I have not been noticed of recently."Hearrell replied, "Doctor, you have succeeded."

page 327:    Mrs. Barlow, nee Avaline Price, daughter of Campbell Price came with her father's people in 1833.Mr. Barlow came in November, 1839, locating southwest of what is now the Depot. Dr. Barlow built his cabinet-shop were L.A. Hill now lives. Subsequently, Dr. Barlow bought Bibson lots from T.W. Dawson and Mr. Rosebrought, & built a second cabinet-shop across the front of both lots, and lived in the Gibson Cabin, and the West Side of Wood Street.

page 330:   Dr. Barlow was a member of the Jackson Legislature at Neosha. They met and seceeded Missouri from Union during Civil War time.

Neosho Times Neosho, Missouri     August 16, 1888

The intellegence of Dr. John J. Barlow's decease came to The Times suite too late last week for the expression of sorrow and sympathy which we desire to publish. Dr. Barlow had been ailing, during several years, and for some time before his death there was fear that the battle for his life against his illness would leave him beyond this world. But he had reached a ripe old age; three score years and ten were almost his.

Dr. Barlow was a prominent, useful and influential citizen of Newton County. He had passed here all the years of his manhood and professional life. During the half century he had seen manhood and professional life. During the half century he had seen the rise of this county and of Neosho. He was a storehouse well filled with knowledge of the history of Southwest Missouri. In his boyhood his advantages for the acquisition of education in schools were few; but still he was a well-informed man, well read not only in his profession, but generally. Drawing from his nature strong and resolute purpose, he educated himself. In the medical profession he gained decided skill, and in the treatment of diseases peculiar to southern climate and habits of life he could have given instructions to the professors in the Missouri Medical College. He was a fine old doctor, a safe counselor at the bedside of the sick.

He knew the people of Missouri thoroughly. On questions of general interest, extending to the entire American people, he was wide awake and well informed. Before the Missouri Constitutional Convention of 1875 assembled, when this state was groaning under unbridled Radical of travagance and dishonesty, we heard Dr. Barlow, in private conversation, delineate the oines of principle and policy which the new constitution should follow; and it was precisely on the lines he spoke of that the convention deemed it wise to work. The result was a good constitution for the emergency, and the coincident opinion of which we speak, though the convention of course knew nothing of it, proved that Dr. Barlow was equal to the political and economic needs of Missouri in an anxious hour of the state's existence.

Dr. Barlow was a man of social habit and feeling; a gentleman of pleasant manners and considerate courtesy; a good neighbor and friend. He was a tall, stalwart, and fine-looking person. It will be long before our people cease to regret his death. The Times sends its message of condolence to the worthy and mourning family.

Mrs. Barlow, mother of P.L. Barlow and Mrs. Tyra Hudson, met with quite a painful as well as serious accident for one of her age last week. While going down into the cellar, she stumbled and fell breaking her arm. Mrs. Barlow is quite old and it takes a long time for bones to knit together with people of her age. At last accounts, however, she was doing nicely and we trust that she will soon recover.

NAOMI FATIMA3 BARLOW, born December 31, 1843 in Neosha, Newton Co Missouri, and died February 06, 1922 in Mt Calm, Hill Co Texas.  After her mothers death, John J. relinquished his daughter to her maternal grandparents, they moved to McLennan Co Texas in 1845. Her grandparents never told her who her biological father was leaving her to grow up not knowing where she came from.  Ironically, during the time she lived in Hill Co Texas, she lived a short distance away from her half-brother Thomas Hart Barlow, who lived in Johnson Co Texas, though neither knew about the other.
Naomi married JAMES CARPENTER BLACKBURN on December 30, 1855 in McLennan Co Texas. The son of William Blackburn and Sarah Fly, he was born 1823 in Tennessee, and died July 22, 1880 in Texas. Naomi and he are buried in Mt Calm Cemetery, Hill Co Texas.  According to the 1900 census, Naomi and James had 9 children, only 5 living.

16.  BIOT BOLLIVER3 BARLOW was born on December 26, 1847, and died from on July 30, 1894 in Neosho Newton Co Missouri, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho Newton Co Missouri, Barlow Family Plot.

PIUS LAMBERTINE BARLOW born January 06, 1850 Neosho, Newton Co Missouri, and died September 29, 1906 in Neosho Newton Co Missouri, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho Co Missouri, Barlow Family Plot.  He never married.

We regret to announce the failing of Mr. P.L. Barlow, dealer in Hardware, stoves, etc. at Neosho and Grandby. His stock in this city was attached on Friday last by the Consolidated Wire Company of St. Louis, for a debt of $700, and the Granby stock was taken charge of by Mr. Lee D. Bell as Trustee for the Simmons Hardware Co, on Saturday, on a chattel mortgage. The Neosho stock is in the hands of the sheriff and an invoice is being taken by Mr. Al Bogal, who has been the manager of Mr. Barlow's store in this city and Dallas Mason. We understand that there is a strong probability of the matter being adjusted and the stocks being consolidated in the hardware business at this place. We hope at least, as Mr. Barlow, during the 18 or 20 years he has been in business in this county has shown himself to be an energetic, careful business man, and by long and faithful work had built up a good business, and enjoyed the confidence of the public generally.

Death of P.L. Barlow

 P.L. Barlow, well known citizen of Neosho who had been sick for several weeks died at the home of his sister, Mrs. T. Hudson, West Color Street, last Saturday morning, September 29. He became affected with dropsy several months ago and about two months ago, surgical operation was performed, which relieved him temporarily, but he did not rally to any extent. He was confined to his room from the time of the operation.

The funeral was held at Mrs. Hudson's residence Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted by Reverend H. Marshall of the Congregational Church.

Mr. Barlow was a son of Dr. Barlow, one of the pioneers of Neosho, who died about 20 years ago, and was born in Neosho 56 years ago. His early life was spent here, but he was in the hardware business in Granby for a long time. He was very successful in business there but lost heavily in the Granby fire and also in mining operations. He moved his store to Neosho and was in business here for several years. For the past three or four years he has been city night watch. Mr. Barlow was man of wide reading and was especially a constant student of the Bible. While he lived in Granby, he taught a large Suday School class. He never married and until his last sickness he lived alone. He enjoyed excellent health until the fatal illness came upon him and it is probable that business reverses had much to do with his premature death. Mr. Barlow was honest and square in his business life and while he had some peculiarities, as most people have, he was a good, clever man, liked by all who knew him. He was a member of the Granby Lodge of Odd Fellows and was also a member of the United Workmen in which he held a policy for $2,000. Besides his mother and sister, Mrs. Hudson, he also leaves one brother, T.H. Barlow, who lives in Arkansas.

VIONNA VASA BARLOW was born March 04, 1852 in Neosho, Newton Co Missouri, and died February 21, 1905 in Pittsburg, Johnson Co Arkansas.
She married ARCHIBALD NELSON WEBBER on October 07, 1874 in Newton Co Missouri. He was born January 1853 in Missouri, and died 1913 in Pittsburg, Johnson Co Arkansas.  Both are buried in Lamar Cemetery, Lamar, Johnson Co Arkansas.

DEWITT CLINTON BARLOW born May 29, 1854 in Neosho Newton Co Missouri, and died November 26, 1902 at the Nevada State Hosptial, Nevada, Vernon Co Missouri from cirrhosis hepatic.  He is buried at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Neosha, Newton Co Missouri in an unmarked grave.  He served in the Civil War and never married.

Dewitt C. Barlow, a brother of P.L. Barlow and Mrs. Lyra [Tyra] Hudson of this city died at Nevada on Wednesday and was buried here yesterday, the funeral taking place from the home of his sister, Mrs. Hudson at 10:30 a.m.

17.  THOMAS HART BARLOW was born on July 29, 1856 in Neosho, Newton Co Missouri and died January 04, 1940 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana

He married NANCY COLEMAN McDANIELS on October 06, 1847 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  Nancy was born September 12, 1823 in Tennessee, and died February 05, 1901 in Laclede Co Missouri. Nancy's parents were William McDaniels and Salley Russell

In 1910, she and John are living in Laclede Co Missouri two doors from her sister in law, Sarah I. Barlow, widow of Robert. She born no children but was step-mother to 3 sons of John.

6.  MICHAEL THOMAS BARLOW born about 1822 and died about 1896 in Newburn, Dyer Co Tennessee (He is not in the 1880 census, I wonder if he might have died c1876, after the birth of his last child c1875)

He married MARY ANN REED (Note from Susan:  I believe she is a Reed because they are living in the Reed household / 1850, where her father is probably a widower, and she is listed under the children, though as a Barlow, but not w/ MT who is listed further down on the census.)

I'm unsure if the last two are actually Barlow, or perhaps Jones, the census is not clear.

8.  WILLIS SOWELL2 BARLOW (John1) was born in 1828 in North Carolina, and died June 26, 1883 in Booneville, Logan Co Arkansas.

He married ELFRIDA CAROLINE WILSON on September 23, 1856 in Gibson Co Tennessee.  Elfida was born July 14, 1839 in Lawrence Co Alabama, and died April 16, 1916 in Booneville, Logan Co Arkansas. Her father was William Havery Wilson and her mother, Martha Ann Coopwood.

Willis Sowell Barlow and Elfida Caroline Wilson

Willis Sowell Barlow came to Booneville in October, 1870 while enroute to Texas from Gibson Co Tennesse. He and his family came through this area evidently to visit a Mr. Conditt who had once lived at Humboldt, Tennessee near the Barlow family. While in this area his four year old daughter, Ida Salena became very ill and this required the family to remain the winter until Ida was well. By spring time the family so liked the area that they decided to make Booneville their home.

Willis who was a farmer and carpenter by trade was born in 1828 in the State of North Carolina, the probable son of John Barlow.

A Kendall Barlow and John Barlow moved to Rutherford Co Tennessee around 1829.

Willis spent his early years in this county with his brothers and sister. He had two brothers who removed to Neosho in Newton Co Missouri around 1840. They were Alfred H. Barlow and Dr. John J. Barlow. Another brother, Michael Thomas Barlow moved to Dyer Co Tennessee and another William Barlow moved to Gibson Co Tennessee. Willis was known to have one sister Jane Barlow who married a William Hunt.

Willis moved to Gibson Co Tennessee in the 1850's and married September 23, 1856 to Miss Elfida Caroline Wilson, daughter of William Harvey Wilson & Martha Ann Coopwood Wilson. Elfida and her brother William "Billie" Wilson were long time residents of Booneville.

Elfida was born July 14, 1839 in Lawrence Co Alabama and William Wilson was born September 17, 1841 in the same county. They lost their parents at a very early age, the father William Harvey Wilson dying before Elfida was five years of age and the mother Martha Ann passing away June 11, 1844, a year later. After the death of William Harvey Wilson his wife Martha married John R. Hoyle November 22, 1843 and he became guardian of Elfida and Billie when Martha passed away. The family moved to Marshall Co Mississippi where Mr. Hoyle remarried. Elfida evidently removed to Gibson Co Tennessee with her grandmother, Elfida Crews Coopwood, widow of David Coopwood, who married November 30, 1846 in Desota Co Mississippi to Robert Corley of Gibson Co Tennessee. Elfida Corley died August 25, 1856. 

Willis S. Barlow being a carpenter assisted in building the second house in New Booneville town. He and his brothers were all carpenters and cabinet-makers by trade leaving the conclusion that their father was in this trade.

Alfred Barlow, son of Alfred Barlow of Newton and McDonald Co Missouri lived with the Barlow family in Booneville for a time. He married Willis and Elfida's oldest daughter Dona Betress Barlow and moved to McDonald Co Missouri where she died August 30, 1881 from childbirth. Willis heard that she was sick and rode on horseback to see her only to see her grave when he arrived. 

Willis passed away June 26, 1883 while working his garden. Elfida Barlow married Henry Bangs February 03, 1887 in Booneville and passed away April 16, 1916 in Booneville.

Willis and Elfida had nine children, seven of whom lived long enough to marry. The first seven children were born in and around Humboldt, Tennessee and the other two in Booneville. 

Wilson Clay Barlow was born June 29, 1857 and died September 23, 1857.

Dona Betress Barlow who married Alfred Barlow was born August 12, 1858.

Their fourth child Alonzo Thomas Barlow was born February 11, 1864 and died March 17, 1934 at Booneville. A.T. Barlow studied law and became a member of the bar in 1904. He served as postmaster at Booneville getting his second appointment in September 1918. He served as Vice President of the Bank of Booneville and was president of Booneville Ice Plant.

For a number of years, or since his residence in this county, the reputation which Mr. Bangs enjoys has been not only that of a substantial and progressive agriculturist, but of an intelligent and thoroughly posted man in all public affairs.

He was born in the Old Dominion on January 06, 1828, and is a son of Jacob and Abigail 'Lawrence' Bangs, both natives of Virginia. The father was a soldier in the Florida War, in which he was killed by the Indians. The parents were married at Fortress Monroe, and to them were born three children of whom our subject is the eldest. The other two, Benjamin and Stephen, are both farmers, and are living in this township. The mother died about 1843.

Henry Bangs, at the age of thirteen years, joined the Florida troops, and was in service for five years. He came to Arkansas, and was married in what is now Logan County, in 1850, to Miss Sarah Walton, a native of Kentucky. Of the twelve children born to this union – six sons and six daughters – seven are now living, viz.:

The mother of these children died in the year 1882. She was a member of the Christian Church.

Mr. Bangs has 240 acres of good land, has 80 acres of this under oultivation, and raises corn and hogs principally.

He is a member of the Christian and his wife a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Question:   Is this the same John Basinger who was married to Henry Bangs daughter, Emily? If so, was there a divorce or a death between Mr. Bassinger and his first wife, whom I would think was Emily noting the date of the biography above, and the date of John and Nettie's marriage. Evidentally, some more research needs to be done on this family.

William's age is another obvious mistake, unless I am misreading it, as perhaps is his birthyear, according to family researchers.  Next door to son, Wesley

Elizabeth birth year is impossible according to dates of birth of her children. In the 1900 census, she is shown as age 76, her birth date March 1826. If that is the case, then the year of Matthew's birth is probably incorrect as well.

Absent on Scout Sept and Oct 1864 to April 30 1865, Present May and June 1865, Absent on detached service, Mustered out with Co July 17, 1865, return for Mch 1864, On detached service hunting Govt horses. The records of this office furnish no evidence of alledged disability. His name is not on the Regtt Hospl Register for April 64.

The following is an extract from the 1969 memoirs of Emily Caroline Barlow, grand-daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Barlow:

The following story was related to me by Pauline Whipple, who was a great granddaughter of Alfred Barlow and a granddaughter of Matthew Barlow. 

"My grandfather was Matthew Barlow who was a son of Alfred Barlow. His mother was a Gibson and 1/4 Cherokee Indian. I saw her several times but did not like her because she looked so cross. 

After she came to Oklahoma with my mother -- Laura Barlow Whipple -- and my father Harry Whipple -- she was told and encouraged to go to the Indian Agency and register so that she would receive benefits from the government, but she had been disowned by her people when she married into the white race and had nothing to do with her Indian people. 

We had been raised in the Midwest and knew nothing about Indians except the wild plain Indians who raided and scalped and massacred and was the affect (sic) of fear and hatred. So she was never put on the rolls. 

"Matthew Barlow opposed slavery and refused to accept them as a wedding present from his family. When the Civil War broke out, his friends took him to the mountains and told him that they would kill him if he joined the Union Army. His uncle, Mat Gibson, said he would tie the knot. Matthew and his wife fled to Arkansas on horseback. Trouble followed them and they went back to Neosho, Missouri, he joined the Union Army and served in the Cavalry to care for horses. He was stationed at Flat Rock, Arkansas, not far from Pea Ridge Battlefield. 

He became a blacksmith and when he returned from the war, sick and disabled, he had a store and blacksmith shop. 

Two brothers came to live with him and said that if he got well they would kill him. He was killed, but I do not know how or by whom. He is buried in New Albany, Kansas." 

In October, 1993, George Lee Walker went to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri to research the Barlow family. In the Fredonia, Kansas Public Library, he found the following references to Matthew J. Barlow: 

M.J. Barlow was listed among charter members of Post 119, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), organized in 1882. 
....History of Neosha and Wilson Counties, P. 895.... 

"M.J. Barlow, the New Albany blacksmith, was adjudged insane last Saturday, by a jury, and will be sent to one of the asylums shortly." 
...Wilson County Citizen, Fredonia, Kansas, January 13, 1888...

"Misfortunes never come singly. Mrs. M.J. Barlow, of New Albany, whose husband recently became insane, met with a serious accident last Saturday. She slipped and fell, breaking her hip." 

"M.J. Barlow, of our town, died last Saturday evening and was buried Monday by the Odd Fellows and G.A.R. Quite a large delegation accompanied the remains to the last resting place."

Note that this forfeiture occurs just after the outbreak of Civil War and amidst terrible strife in the area between sympathizers of North and South, in which M. J. Barlow was deeply involved.

I am searching for information on John's parents. I know he and Cynthia visited Faulkner Co Arkansas and some of their children were born there. For the most part, though, they lived either in Van Buren or White Co Tennessee. They are buried at Preston Heights Cemetery, Quebeck, White Co Tennessee.

Lemuel went to the Civil War and was next found in San Marcos, Hays Co Texas, where he married Mary Smith Fisher on the last day of 1874. They had a daughter named Nevada in 1876 before moving to Lincoln Co New Mexico. In 1879, Lemuel deserted his family to go to the Colorado Gold Rush. In January of 1880, his son William Barlow was born --- a fact that he may not have known because there is a family story of him visiting Mary in 1889 and being confronted by the young Willie Barlow holding a rifle--and Lemuel did not recognize Willie as his son. Mary divorced Lemuel on grounds of desertion in June 1881

Willie Barlow was adopted by his Mary Fisher's third husband, Walker Whitfield Paul, and was renamed William Walker Paul.

It appears that Lemuel Green Barlow may have been married previous to Mary, possibly in Missouri. He was in the 1880 census in Rio Arriba, New Mexico living with two little girls: Amelia, born 1870 in Texas and Almara, born 1874 in San Marcos, Texas.

I have been contacted by a descendant of Amelia Barlow who was not aware that Lemuel had another family. Willie Barlow's descendant also was not aware that Lemuel had another family! I still do not know who the first woman was or where Lemuel died and is buried. I do know that Amelia and Laura Barlow were good friends, and Laura Barlow is the daughter of Matthew James Barlow, another brother of Lemuel's.

Note: Gerald shows the name to be Samuel, but I believe the divorce decree will prove that the name is indeed, Lemuel.

Note from Susan: Having located the 1880 census for both Lemuel and Mary, I think it is feasible to say that they had separated, note that he considered himself already divorced 'D' in the 1880 census. Guessing further, it does appear that he had previously been married, my guess is that his first wife died in or shortly after giving birth to Almara, and that Lemuel and Mary married almost immediately thereafter.

Note from Susan: I cannot find a record of his being in the Civil War, can anyone help?

The record shows his parents to have been born in Mississippi, an obvious mistake. No children listed, thus the children Mary borned must have been from a previous marriage and now grown.

He married 2.)  NEOMA JANE INGRAM on October 24 or 26, 1879 in Booneville, Logan Co Arkansas. She was born March 1860 in Tennessee. Neoma may have died before 1910 also, as all of the younger children are living in their older siblings households.

Funeral services for Alford Guy Barlow, 66, Arpelar, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Nazarene Church of Arpelar with the Rev. Ernest Harrison and the Rev. Virgil Palmer officiating. Barlow died Sunday in the Veteran's Admistration Hospital in Oklahoma City. An employee of McAlester General Hospital, he was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Lone Grove Freewill Baptist Church. He was born March 16, 1901 in Pittsburg County and was a lifelong resident of this area. He married Joyce Thompson Sept. 03, 1949 in Van Buren, Ark.

Survivors in addition to his wife, include a sister, Mrs. Bessie Shaffer, Dewar and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Indianola Cemetery under the direction of Mills-Humphrey Funeral Home. Pallbearers…….

Joy Barlow, 64 died October 3 at Carl Albert Indian Hospital in Ada. She was a housewife. Born March 29, 1919 in Wister, she had lived most of her life in Pittsburg County. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Guy Barlow in 1967.

Survivors include one sister, Christine Sam of Oklahoma City and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at the Quinton Church of God, Friday October 5 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Brooken Cemetery under the direction of Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.

Living only a few houses away from Isaac in the 1910 census, I find a Jim Barlow, widowed, age 83 (born c1837) and his daughter, Georgia Lee Barlow, age 22, both born in Missouri. They live in the household of J.J. Davis and family, where Jim is shown as the father-in-law, thus making him the father of Mr. Davis' wife, her name looks like 'Renmer'.  Following Jim back in time, I find him to be James M. Barlow, who originally lived in Chariton Co Missouri. He is apparently the son of Julius Barlow, whom I find living a few doors away in the 1860 census of Cole Co Missouri. Julius in turn, is the son of Henry Barlow and Jane Marshall of the Germanna Barlow's. DNA testing has proven that these Barlow families are totally unrelated.

While I am sure these are children of Isaac and Altha, why does this census record show them as having parents born in different states? Apparently another mistake on the part of the census taker!

16.  BIOT BOLLIVER3 BARLOW (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born on December 26, 1847, and died on July 30, 1894 in Neosho Missouri, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho Co Missouri, Barlow Family Plot.

He married MARY LUZETTA 'LULA' PRICE on June 18, 1879 in Newton Co Missouri.  The daughter of J.B. Price and Mary Curry, she was born on June 18, 1857 and died October 28, 1939 in Joplin Missouri, burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho Co Missouri, Barlow Family Plot.

J.B. Price came up from Fairland Saturday evening, called to the bedside of his son-in-law, Biot Barlow, who expired the 30th instant. Mr. Price is the eldest of the Price family so large and conspicuous in Neosho's history.

Died, on Monday, July 30th at his residence in Neosho, Biot B. Barlow in the 47th year of age. Mr. Barlow was well known in this city although for some time back he has been employed in Joplin. He was a very sociable and kind-hearted man and suffered from a complication of diseases for over a year, which finally changed to dropsy and resulted in his death.

His funeral took place Tuesday, July 31st, and he was buried in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery.

John M. Purdy, reporter for Neosho Lodge No. 2496 Knights of Honor, received a check for $2000 on the treasurer of the Supreme Lodge K of H in payment of the beneficiary certificate of B.B. Barlow, deceased. The beneficiary was his widow, Mrs. Lulu Barlow, and the check was cashed to her on Monday last by the Neosho Savings Bank. During the protracted illness of the deceased, he unable to keep up his monthly assessment, and in a true spirit of fraternity, they were kept up by his brethren in the lodge. This handsome premium will provide Mrs. Barlow and her little brood of orphans with a comfortable home and needed support.

Mrs. Stella Clegg Doane, 88 of 540 East Eastwood, died early this morning at Fitzgibbon Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 1:3- pm Friday in the Campbell-Lewis Chapel with Rev. William F. Pinkerton, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Doane was born in Siloam Springs, Ark, April 01, 1882 the daughter of Biot and Lula Barlow. She was married September 04, 1904 in Erie, Mo., to Fred E. Doane who preceded her in death December 17, 1955. Mr. and Mrs. Doane owned and operated the Marshall Laundry since 1925, living in Marshall since then coming from Joplin, Mo. Mrs. Doane was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Mary) Cassidy, Marshall; one granddaughter, Mrs. James M. (Jane) Stone, North Kansas City; (died August 2005) one great grandson, Todd Stone; one sister, Mrs. R.E. Hill, Joplin, Mo.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Morgey, and one brother.

The family suggests Memorials be to the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

17.  THOMAS HART3 BARLOW (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born on July 26, 1856 in Neosho Missouri and died January 04, 1940 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana. He is buried at Forest Park Cemetery in E. Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana.

He married ANNE REBECCA COTTERMAN on September 29, 1883 in Seneca Missouri. (not verified)   Anne was born April 15, 1866 in Cleveland Ohio (city of birth not verified) and died February 09, 1921 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana.  According to the Louisiana Death Certificate No. 109, coroner's report...."Took gasoline bath near gas stove upon advice of friends? for rheumatism."

Funeral services for Thomas Hart Barlow, 85, who died Thursday at the home of his son, W.E. Barlow, 659 Huron Street, were held at 4 p.m. yesterday at McCook Brothers Funeral Home. Dr. Wade H. Boggs, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was at Forest Park Cemetery. 

Mr. Barlow was a retired railroad man and had lived here for 27 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. F.D. Causey of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. L.J. Langer of Kilgore, Texas and six sons, R.D., T.I., W.L., W.E., V.F., and F.H. Barlow, all of Shreveport.

A.P. Herbert, F.W. Williams, J.C. Hunt, Hugh H. Harlan, A.S. Winston, and Roscoe Van Anda were pallbearers.

Mrs. T.H. Barlow, age 53, of South Highlands, died at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, in a local sanitarium. Funeral services will take place from the Welleman Undertaking parlor at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. Reverend Dr. Jasper K. Smith officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Barlow is survived by her husband, seven sons, T.R. Barlow, W.E. Barlow, W.L. Barlow, V.P. Barlow, and Forrest Barlow of Shreveport, R.D. Barlow of McAllister, Oklahoma, and E.L. Barlow of Ruston, Louisiana, and two daughters, Mrs. Louie Langer of Shreveport, and Mrs. T.H. Carter of South Highlands.

FLORENCE BESSIE BARLOW was born April 23, 1886 in Wellington, Sumner Co Kansas, and died July 01, 1959 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co California, burial in an unmarked grave in Forest Park Cemetery, E. Shreveport, Caddo Parish Lousiana in the Barlow family plot.
She married 1) FORREST HARVILLE 'NICK' CARTER on December 25, 1905. She married 2) WILLIAM ALBERT 'BILL' CAUSEY 1927 until his death in 1958.

THOMAS IVAN BARLOW born on March 26, 1890 in Arkansas City, Cowley Co Kansas and died April 07, 1965 in Shreveport, Caddo Co Louisiana.
He married 1) MAUDE MABLE LACOUR from 1921 til her death in  1926.  Maude kept her name when she married Tom.  (Child: Jack LaCour Barlow)  He married 2) LOUISE MARGARET BARNHILL from 1929-1939?  He married 3) HELEN MARIE DICKSON 1939-1942.  He and his first wife are buried  at Forest Park Cemetery in E. Shreveport, Caddo Parish in the Barlow family plot.

ANNA CLEO 'KITTY' BARLOW was born July 17, 1891 in Chanute, Neosho Co Kansas, and died December 10, 1985 in Hemphill, Sabine Co Texas.
She married She married LOUIS JOSEPH LAENGER on November 29, 1913 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisana.  He was born April 01, 1888 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana, and died November 13, 1947 in Texas City, Galveston Co Texas.  Both are buried at Galveston County Memorial Cemetery in Hitchcock, Galveston Co Texas but not side by side.

ELMORE LEWIS BARLOW was born on July 12, 1894 in Galveston, Galveston Co Texas, and died April 12, 1949 in Plaquemine, Iverville Parish Louisiana, burial in an unmarked grave at Protestant Cemetery in Plaquemine, Iverville Parish Louisisana.
He married MARY VASHTI ROBERTS on February 18, 1912 in Homer, Claiborne Parish Louisiana.  She was born December 04, 1899 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Lousiana, and died November 23, 1988 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish Lousiana, burial in Riverview Cemetery in Monroe, Ouachita Parish Louisiana.

WARREN LESLIE BARLOW was born on November 10, 1900 in Cleburne Johnson Co Texas, and died October 24, 1924 in El Dorado, Union Co Arkansas.  He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Barlow family plot at Forest Park Cemetery, East Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana.  He did not marry.

VIRGIL FRANK BARLOW was born on December 25, 1902 in Cleburne, Johnson Co Texas, and died on November 03, 1961 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish Lousisiana, burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Haughton, Bossier Parish Louisiana.
He married WILLIE ELLEN BROWN on January 22, 1929 in Marshall, Harrison Co Texas.  She was born August 10, 1910 in Longstreet, DeSoto Parish Louisiana, and died May 09, 2007 in Haughton, Bossier Parish Louisiana. Both are buried in Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Haughton, Bossier Parish Louisiana.

FORREST HARVILLE 'FROG' BARLOW was born January 17, 1907 in Minden, Webster Parish Louisiana, and died May May 14, 1989 in Bangor, Butte Co California.
He married JAMES MILDRED HENDERSON on October 12, 1930 in Bossier City, Bossier Parish Louisiana. Mildred, as she liked to be called, was born July 15, 1912 in Cason, Morris Co Texas, and died April 26, 1972 in Kern Co California.  Both are buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, Orange Co California.

18.  TYRA ORAGORA BARLOW3 (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born February 07, 1859 in Neosho, Newton Co Missouri, and died December 28, 1931 in Neosho, Newton Co Missouri.

She married Dr. DANIEL DAVID HUDSON on December 11, 1881 in Newton Co Missouri. Daniel was born 1857 in Kentucky, and died March 28, 1999 in Neosha, Newton Co Missouri.  Both are buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho, Newton Co Missouri.

ONE OF NEOSHO'S MOST BELOVED CITIZENS DIES

Mrs. Tyra Barlow Hudson Succumbs to Paralytic Stroke.

Neosho was shocked last night, to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Tyra Barlow Hudson, one of the most widely known women of the community, and a resident of Neosho her entire life.

Mrs. Hudson had appeared to be in her usual good health, and had been down town, as was her custom, during the day, and was preparing for the evening meal, with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clifford Hudson when she suffered a stroke of paralysis, and death came about 8 o'clock.

Mrs. Hudson's mother came to Neosho in 1833, and her father, the late Dr. John T. Barlow, assisted in laying out Neosho's township.

Mrs. Hudson was a daughter of the late Dr. John J. Barlow, a pioneer citizen of Newton County who assisted in lay8ing out the townsite of Neosho.  Her mother was Avaline Price.  Tyra Barlow was born in this town and was married to Dan Hudson in early womanhood.  To them were born two children, John Clifford and Avaline, Mrs. Charles Wantland, both of whom survive her.  Mr. Hudson died many years ago and the mother reared the children alone.  After they were grown and no longer needed her care, her energies and urge for usefulness were directed into other channels.  For many years she was active in church work and later became interested in welfare work in Neosho and Newton County.  During the World War she was especially active in this work and was responsible then and later for placing many unfortunate children in good homes.  In her activities as truant officer for the Neosho school district to which she was appointed some time later, she aided materially and by her encouragement and friendship, many underprivileged children.  As police matron in which capacity she served for a number of years, she never failed to take advantage of the opportunities offered to help the unfortunate with whom she came in contact, and no one will ever know how many lives have been made more wholesome and useful by her gentle administration of her duties.

Note from Susan:   In searching for Barlow material in Oklahoma, I find mention of a Reverend W.H. Barlow, officiating at funerals in Hominy Oklahoma, that may be the same. Years found were 1926 and 1934.

20.  JOSEPH BENSON3 BARLOW (CYRUS2, JOHN1) was born on January 02, 1850 in Rutherford Co Tennessee and died September 20, 1916, burial in Barlow Cemetery located on the Old Alvin Barlow Farm on M.M. Hwy., Osage Twp Laclede Co Missouri.

He married MARTHA ELLEN LEWIS on February 17, 1876 in the home of Joseph R. Lewis, the brides father. She was born in June 17, 1855 in Missouri, and died November 02, 1905, burial in Barlow Cemetery located on the Old Alvin Barlow Farm on M.M. Hwy., Osage Twp Laclede Co Missouri. GEORGE E.4 BARLOW was born in July of 1878 in Missouri, and died 1954, burial in Laclede City Cemetery, Laclade Co Missouri.
I have not yet located George in the 1920 census

In 1920, a Mrs. Josie Barlow, a widow is a lodger in the home of Mike L. Wagner in Kansas City, Missouri. She may not be the same, if so, she is using her maiden name, (or perhaps she married a Barlow cousin) -- the age and places of birth for both she and the parents are the same as hers would be.

21.  ROBERT FRANKLIN BARLOW3 (CYRUS2, JOHN1) was born June 19, 1855 Laclede Co Missouri and died July 11, 1907.

He married SARAH ISABELL RANDOLPH on November 17, 1876 in the home of the groom's father. Laclede Co Missouri Volume I Book C 59 - 142 

EDGIL BARLOW born c1904 in Missouri / a young man, Everett Barlow, age 15 is living in the household of James McDaniel in 1910 Laclede Co Missouri, whom I believe may be the same as Edgil.

22.  EDWARD ANDREW BARLOW 3 (CYRUS2, JOHN1) was born on November 10, 1862 in Missouri and died December 26, 1946, burial in Lebanon City Cemetery, Laclede Co Missouri.

He married SUSAN JOSEPHINE LEWIS on December 16, 1886. She was born December 13, 1868, and died June 30, 1932, burial in Lebanon City Cemetery, Laclede Co Missouri.    Laclede Co Missouri Volume II Book B 34 - 390    (I think she may be a sister to Joseph Benson's wife, Martha Ellen Lewis.)

23.  ALONZO THOMAS BARLOW3 (WILLIS2, JOHN1) was born on February 11, 1864-65 near Humbolt, Tennessee and died on March 17, 1934 in Booneville, Logan Co Arkansas.

He married COMFORT ANICE STANFIELD on August 26, 1883 in Logan Co Arkansas.   She is the daughter of Thomas P. and C. A. 'Woody' Stanfield.

A.T. Barlow - Booneville, Arkansas 1918   He was 6 years old when brought to Arkansas    Born Gibson County Tennessee February 11, 1864   His parents were W.S. and Elfida 'Wilson' Barlow.   They were natives of North Carolina and Tennessee, respectively.

W.S. was born in 1828, son of William Barlow who was mentioned among pioneer settlers of Tennessee in Rutherford Co Tennessee.

J.W. Stanfield was early taught the duties of farm life, and this has been his chosen occupation, though of late years he has been engaged in the mercantile business, having a general stock of merchandise in Booneville, worth about $1,300. He has only been in the business about a year, but during that short period he has gained the confidence and esteem of all by his honest, upright dealings.

He is a young man of good business qualifications, and will, no doubt, make a complete success of this enterprise.  He is also the owner of fifty acres of good land, and has twenty-four acres under cultivation.

In March, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Craine, daughter of J.V. Craine, and they have one child, a daughter, named Vora Lee.

Mr. Stanfield was born in Wayne Co Tennessee, in August, 1857, and his parents, Thomas P. and C.A. 'Woody' Stanfield, were both natives of Tennessee also. They were married in that State, and to their union were born six children–three sons and three daughters–viz.:

Robert F. - deceased J.W. Mary J. Joseph Z. Charity E. Comfort A.   The father was a soldier in the United States Army, and was killed in 1865.  The mother removed from Tennessee to Arkansas, in 1880.

Their daughter, Mary J., was married in Tennessee, to Buck Lynch, and then removed to Alabama, where she now resides.  Charity married J.W. Fields, of Booneville, Logan Co Arkansas.   Comfort married A.T. Barlow, a farmer in Logan Co Arkansas   Joseph married Miss Ida Barlow, sister to A.T. Barlow
