James B. Barlow and Sarah Biggs

James B. Barlow, b 1795 in North Carolina [C1850], farmer in Marshall Co Mississippi [C1850], and died before 1860, in Marshall Co Mississippi.

He married Sarah Biggs, she born 1812 in North Carolina [C1850], or 1805 [tombstone] and died after 1893 [tombstone]s burial in Tula Cemetery, Hamlet of Tula, Lafayette Co Mississippi.

I found a James Barlow living in New Hanover Co Virginia on the census. Apparently the Barlow's had something to do with a mill, I believe it was called "Barlow's Mill".   This "Barlow's Mill" was owned by a Thomas Barlow, who I think may be the father of James B. Barlow. [KB]    Note from Susan....work from a professional genealogist has shown that Thomas of Hanover Co Virginia is a member of the Robert T. Barlow family, who eventually came to Arkansas.  DNA from that family does not match with that of James Barlow's family.

Note from Susan:  DNA testing shows the relationship to the William Barlow of Robeson North Carolina and Branson Barlow of Alabama to be very closely related.  In studying further, I noted that Marsh Barlow, son of William Barlow, has a son James mentioned in his will, whose age would be correct to be this particular person.

In the NC marriage bonds, I find a James Barlow marrying Anna Smith on January 20, 1817 in Robeson Co NC, who could have may have been a first wife of James.    I don't know if anyone has researched the Biggs name, but there are several Biggs families in Robeson Co NC, from 1790 to present time.  Is it possible the daughter Ann was named for a first wife, Ann?  This, I know is grasping straws, but an avenue to research.    [SBH]

Alexander Barlow, born 1838 [C1850], 1839 [C1860], 1843 [C1870]. or 1841 [C1880] in North Carolina, and died November 22, 1902, in Craighead Co Arkansas.

Elisha A. Barlow, born 1840 [C1850, 80], 1841 [C1860], or 1842 [C1870], April 1840 [C1900] in Tennessee, and died April 18, 1901 in Woodruff Co Arkansas. [OBIT]

James E.M. Barlow, born December 02, 1844, and died  February 02, 1925 buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi.

William Barlow, born c1854-56 in Mississippi, no longer in census records after 1870.  He may have moved out of Mississippi.

Alexander Barlow, born 1838 [C1850], 1839 [C1860], 1843 [C1870]. 1841 [C1880] or April 1854 [C1900] in North Carolina, and died November 22, 1902 in Craighead Co Arkansas. [MR] 

He married 1.  Frances A. c1868-69.  Born August 12, 1845, and died November 29, 1872, burial in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi. [LB]
Perhaps she was a Morgan. I found in the 1860 census of Marshall Co Mississippi, a Polly Morgan, age 40, most likely a widow, with a daughter, Artilla, age 16, who may very well be Frances Artilla. The age would be correct.

He married 2. Martha.

Alexander Barlow, Private, Co H 22nd MS Infantry, promoted to Corporal, served 1861-65, wounded.   [MR] 

Pension application no. 3814 filed August 06, 1902 as resident of Craighead Co Arkansas, died November 22, 1902. [MR]

I find an Alexander and Martha Barlow buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Green Co Arkansas, but no date are shown so I do not know how we might determine if it this couple.   Green County borders Craighead County.

He married Martha Alderson on 30 August 1866, Marshall Co Mississippi  Bk 4 Pg 179 . She probably died between 1882-1900

I am sure Martha is Elisha's wife, but it does appear she is living in the house next to Elisha.  Probably a mistake on the part of the census taker.  I believe J.M. will be James M., brother of Elisha, and M.J., his wife.

Although this census shows Elisha as married 46 years, I believe Martha must be deceased, she is not in the household.

He married 1. Martha Jane Roach January 06, 1870 Marshall Co IGI, born July 25, 1853, and died February 21, 1876 [LB]

He married 2. Mary Hasseltine 'Mollie' Coffman, on 14 December 1876 in Marshall Co Mississippi [IGI] The daughter of John Coffman and Orry Wilson, she was born 14 January 1839 in Troup, Georgia, and died 10 April 1895 in Marshall Co Mississippi, burial in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi.  She had previously been married to C. or S.H. Wortham of Tennessee, and had at least one child, Georgia W. Wortham [J]

I wonder about the first 3 children, they show their father and mother born in Tennessee, making me think they may be adopted children. The census does not show the relationship of Sarah, but she is surely his mother, and Permenious, is brother to James, son to Sarah.  

I tried to find Bauss / Baus / Bauce / Boss / Bass / Bose / Bause / Bouse / to fit into this family in 1900, but was unable to find any with matching criteria.

Georgia is his step-daughter, and is a Worsham, but  is apparently using the Barlow name.

This may be a child of Mollie and her first husband, perhaps James adopted her, see birthplaces for parents in the 1880 census.

He married Mattie Davis on November 26, 1899 in Lafayette Co Mississippi [IGI] The daughter of Robert Davis and Martha Susan Oswalt, she was born 21 January 1888 in Tula, Lafayette Co Mississippi, and died 17 July 1970 in Oxford, Lafayette Co Mississippi [IGI]

He married Viola Abbott, c1896.   She was born March 1870 in Alabama.  I find a Viola A. Barlow, died March 10, 1958 in Dallas Co Texas, DC #14659 that may be her

BARLOW - POE - ALDERSON - ADAY families

Elisha Barlow married Martha Alderson, 30 August 1866, in Marshall Co, Mississippi. All of my "Poe" family migrated eventually to Marshall County and married into the families in the early 1800's. I find more on all the other families usually and not much on my own, "Poe". The Barlows in reference were living next door to William and Betsy Poe in 1850. Like the Poe's, they came from North Carolina; I would be willing to bet that Betsy was a Barlow. I just don't know how to prove it. My major milestone will be linking William Poe to the Poe's in Chatham Co North Carolina. The Barlows lived between two Poe's, two Williams to be exact. Both are my descendents.

William Poe age 59 Farmer owned 2500 acres and was from North Carolina
Betsy Poe age 52 also from NC -Chatham Co NC- born January 06, 1800, died and is buried in Marshall Co October 04, 1857, killed in a tornado. This inscription was on her headstone. She is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery. William Poe is a mystery.

On the census of 1850 William Green Poe had married Minerva Poe and moved next door to the Barlows. His headstone was in Bethlehem Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi also, but has been destroyed since then. My Aunt Cecil Poe Simmons, about 85 years old now told me he was a Mason and had a Masons -Woodsmans-head- stone. She said she doesn't know what happened to it.

Howard Faulkner Poe married Jimmie Watius Porter in Mississippi, December 27, 1893. Jimmie was born in Marshall Co Mississippi March 07, 1877. She was the daughter of James Robert Porter and Margaret Ann Burris. She died June 18, 1961 Howard Faulkner Poe died May 1, 1945 in Mississippi. Land and Property Records for Marshall County, Mississippi shows a deed transaction referencing William Green Poe as the land owner. Joseph H. Poe and others dated 11th day November 1872. 80 acres of land. I couldn't read the upper half of the document. I really don't know what was actually going on here, but it seems reasonably safe to assume that all these people I am about to list for you were involved in this deed transaction. The others listed were including Joseph H. Poe are: J.J.B. Poe - he married Margaret Aday A.P. Poe "Alexander P. Poe" - I don't know which of these others is his family yet G. B. Poe "Green Berry Poe" ,Ditto J.L. Aday and Mary Aday, E.A. Barlow - male, Martha "Alderson" Barlow, J.W. White, ? Eliza White, ? Martha Poe Greer, James Greer, Martha Greer, - child I presume, B. Alderson, J. Alderson, George W. Alderson, B.F. Alderson, W.G. Alderson, Jerry Alderson .  These were the names on this document. Previous records show: John Aday married Mary Alderson, Lucinda "Cindy" Aday married B. Alderson - Benjamin Margaret Aday married J.J.B. Poe. Elisha Barlow married Martha Alderson. Just which one of my ancestors married into the Alderson family is still a mystery as well as the Barlow mystery. These families were all tied in from William Green Poe's first family, unless of course, he had another family previous to this that I am not aware of. Is there also a relationship here?
