3. CUTHBERT³ BARLOW (JAMES², JAMES¹) was born May 07, 1795, and died 1865 in St Sedan, France.

He married MARY ANN LAMBERT, daughter of THOMAS LAMBERT and LYDIA FETHERSTON.

• Youngest son, first Communion 7/6/1810
• Occupation: Army
• Entered the Royal Navy at the age of ten as a Midshipman (Officer Cadet) under the command of Sir Peter Parker of HMS Weazel.
• Whilst engaged with a Spanish Brig of War off Cadiz he was wounded by musket ball through the leg and cutlass wound in the shoulder.He recovered after somewhile in Haslar Hospital.
• He entered the Army on 7th June 1810 at the age of 14.
• Served in Wellington's Peninsular Campaign from 1810-1812 with 2nd battalion 66th Regiment.
• Served in Candian War (Ceylon) in 1814 as Adjutant.
• Joined 17th Foot in Bengal and served through the Goorkahar and Nepaul 1815.
• Was engaged at the Battle of Jubblepore in 1817, served through the Mahratta War 1817-1818.
• Returned with Regiment as Acting Adjutant in 1823.
• Married Mary Ann Lambert 6/4/1824 in Dublin (Church of Ireland)
• Was appointed Paymaster of the 54th Regiment in India 1828 until the Regiment returned to England.
• Joined 57th Reg.of Foot in1840, transferred to the 10th Reg. of Foot in Calcutta 1843.
• Was present at Meerat in the Punjaub 1845.
• Presented with medal at the Battle of Sobraon.
• Served with the 9th Lancers at the Passage of the Chenab, Ragmugger, hillianwallah and Goojerat.
• Presented with Medal and Clasps in the Sutley Campaign.
• Having fought in 38 engagements in all and retired from the Army with the rank of Major.

27th October 1777; land including Rossmilan, Shanvaladen, Carneglagh, Stone park, Ballyglass, transferredfrom Rt Hon George Caulfeild to James Barlow of Rossmilan, Co Galway.George Barlow is mentioned as a brother of James but unclear if LtEdward Barlow of 6th Regiment of Foot is also a brother.

1777 - Article of Agreement (214157) (I have photocopy)

27th November 1777; made between James Barlow of Rossmilan, Co Galway, Jane Fetherston daughter of John Fetherston, late of Dardistown, Co Westmeath deceased and Cuthbert Fetherston of Mosstown,Co Westmeath and Edward Fetherston of the City of Dublin.This deed recites deed of27th October 1777 re lands including Rossmilan.

1810 - Deed of Marriage Settlement (436250) (I have photocopy)

6th September 1810; made between John Barlow of Rossmilan, Co Galway, Charlotte Fetherston of Mosstown, Co Westmeath, 4th daughter ofCuthbert Fetherston, son of Cuthbert Fetherston of Mosstown and Edward Fetherston of Moate, Co Westmeath.

Marriage intended between John Barlow and Charlotte Fetherston

John Barlow Esq, owner, Ralph Montague Smyth, petitioner (? same as husband of Elizabeth Charlotte Barlow of Parsonstown, King’s County, see Deed below dated 2/4/1846).
Estate sold at the Court of Commissioners, 14 Henrietta Street, Dublin, on Thursday, 16th November 1854 at 12 o’clock, noon.
The sale was reported in the Galway Mercury on Saturday, 18th November 1854.
Mr. Edward Gear was the purchaser in trust at £5,600.
Mr. John Smyth, Solicitor had the conduct of the sale.

The estate comprised of 697 acres 2 rods 38 perches (Statute measure) in Rosmilan, Cartrons and Shanvaladen.

Notes from Helga Mullins (present owner of Bushy Park)

• Bushy Park house is the oldest inhabited “Big House” in the Suck Valley area.
• She reports that the Barlows lived here in fine style with a pack of Harriers, but subsequently lost their money and emigrated to Australia sometime before 1864.
• The Frenchs from Monivea Castle Co Galway moved in in 1864.

Deed of Marriage Settlement dated 2/4/1846 between Ralph Montague Smyth of Harrington St., Dublin, Solicitor (1st) and Elizabeth Charlotte Barlow of Parsonstown, Kings Co. (2nd).

A memorial of Deed of Settlement on marr. of John Barlow with Miss Margaret Fetherston dated 12/2/1846 between John Barlow of Hazelbrook, Co Roscommon (1st) and Margaret Fetherston of Pembroke St., Dublin. One of the younger children ofTheobald Fetherston formerly of Mosstown, Co Westmeath, Cuthbert F. of Dardistown, Co West-meath, heir at law of Theobald F., James Barlow of Bushy Park, Co. Roscommon and Theobald F. of Newgrove, Co Tipperary.

The other initially came over from England. When a Barlow from Derbyshire went to be Gardener to the Shiels family of Kilbegnet House in approximately 1825. (1856 - Griffiths Primary Valuation:Shiels; Rosmoylan).He lived near Kilbegnet House. The family of his son (or possibly grandson) was evicted from house to a cottage on the edge of bog in Rosmoylan.

The next generation were:

John, born 1854 and died 1933; Maria; Margaret; Annie; Pat; James; William; Ellen

Ellen married a local Farmer Muldoon but died soon after. The other girls went to America. Maria and Margaret lived at Woonsocket Rhode, Island. They both were Dressmakers but never married and died in 1944. Annie was also a Dressmaker and married late in life to a widower with a family of nine. They lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts

All the boys eventually emigrated to England. Pat and Jim went to Liverpool. Pat married and had a Pub. Jim later went to America and had at least two daughters, Margaret and Celesta.

William lived and died (1933) at 16 Hazylett (?) Road, Kensington, West London. He had a daughter May (Mrs. Pond or Bond) and a son William (Billy). Billy married and lived in Merton Park.

John had four sons and one daughter. One son James was born in 1909. He came to Manchester, England in 1933 and worked as a Joiner. James had two sons and three daughters all married and living in/near Manchester. He had at least eleven grandchildren.

Edward Barlow, youngest son of Captain John Barlow of Bushy Park, Co Roscommon and Rosmilan Park, Co Galway moved to Port Phillip. Barlow m. Jane, eldest dau of William Lilburne, a Melbourne merchant.
