DNA testing has shown that this is a part of the Fairfield Connecticut Barlow's.

Generation 1
Thomas Barlow /John Barlow [Larkin] was born about 1760 and came to America from Scotland before the Revolutionary War.  He died between 1820 and 1825 at Memphis, Shelby Co Tennessee, and was buried there. Some sources believe that Thomas is the son of Henry Barlow and Judith of the Wilkes Co North Carolina, 'Bunches of Barlow's' families.

Thomas Barlow and his family came to White Co Illinois, in 1818 and were recorded in the 1818 census there. They returned to Shelby Co Tennessee, before 1820 and were recorded there in the 1820 census. His widow, Elizabeth Barlow, returned to Illinois with her four sons in 1825 and was recorded in Montgomery Co Illinois, in the 1830 census. [Apparently here we have a conflict of records in just who the husband of Elizabeth Nicholas was.  According to marriage bonds of North Carolina, online, Ancestry.com, (, she married John Barlow, unless his name was John Thomas or vice-versa ... Larkin's FTM CD shows that Thomas Barlow married Elizabeth Nichols, should it read Nicholas...and what is the absolute documentation for either?]

John Barlow
married Elizabeth 'Betsy' Nicholas on 07 June 1792 in Orange Co North Carolina, Bond #000094708, Witnessed by Ab B Bruce, Bondsman:  James Comb. [North Carolina Marriage Bonds, online at Ancestry.com, whose source is:  Original data: State of North Carolina. An Index to Marriage Bonds Filed in the North Carolina State Archives. Raleigh, NC, USA: North Carolina Division of Archives and History, 1977]   She was born in 1787.  [1767, Larkin] She died on January 18, 1841, at Grisham Township, Montgomery Co Illinois, and was buried there in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Information above comes from February 1998, Barlow of Barlow Newsletter, page 30, submitted by Reba Mathis, Nancy Boon, and Montgomery County Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 9 No. 2 spring 1987 except where otherwise noted.

Note from Susan:  I would like to know the source of Thomas' birth in Scotland. DNA testing has comfirmed that this family is related to John Barlow of Fairfield Connecticut, as well as several others, who are believed to have arrived from Lancashire, England.
[Larkin:  I think the Nicholas family may well have been Scots despite a grandsons report that these Barlows were from Scotland, I think not. There were far too many older Thomas Barlows from Virginia and England before that.  I have never been able to find the name Barlow in a Scot database. Much speculation of course.]
Children of Thomas and Elizabeth are:
Catherine Barlow was born around 1780-90 in Virginia [Mathis]  She died in 1836 in Montgomery Co Illinois.
She married John Burke in Virginia [LDS Family Registry Index] [Notes from Susan:  Orange Co North Carolina Marriage Records show:  John Burke and Catey Barlow, married 01 December 1802, witnessed by Thomas Barlow ...as well as a David Ragins to Susannah Hargiss, witnessed by Thomas Barlow ... which might suggest a relationship between Thomas Barlow and Lucinda Hargis to Thomas Barlow and Elizabeth Nicholas. IL VR shows a Sarah Barlow marrying John Burk on May 17, 1832 in Madison Co Illinois.... and you will note that her brother, John and Anna Burk were married in Madison Co]

Note from Janette O'Boyle: Some of the baptisms listed in White County show James and "Polly" Barlow as the parents. I don't have a marriage date on Amanda J., but she could have been the mother of Eliza and then she died and James married a Mary / "Polly"

The belief that the children of Wm Barlow after 1840 moved to Illinois is supported by this entry Biographical Sketches Joseph F.M. Barlow private Co. A, 26th MO Inf. (Civil War) Full muster record for Joseph F.M. Barlow: age 26 at enlistment; height 5' 9 1/4"; light hair; blue eyes; Light complexion; single; occupation farmer; born in McCracken county, Kentucky; at time of enlistment, residing in Walshville, Montgomery county, Illinois; enlisted October 1, 1861; mustered in on October 1, 1861, at St. Louis, Missouri by a Captain Tracy. Joseph Barlow is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Cemetery, Walshville, Illinois.

1. A military headstone was placed near his grave. He died September 22, 1882. The stone was made by Sheldon & Sons of Rutland, VT. The order was placed Aug. 21, 1888.

2. Also note that some of the children of William have more than one middle initial. My ancestor was Mary Hudah Barlow Holliday Morgan, there is no Mary in William of McCracken's will. This is from her obit "Mary H. Morgan was the daughter of William Barlow and was born in Tennessee, February 12, 1824. She came to Illinois when young with her parents and settled on what is now known as the C.C. Root farm (Montgomery Co IL) , where she spent her early womanhood."    The question is why do I think she was Polly H. Barlow who is mentioned in William of McCrackens will? 1) She was listed as a Polly Holliday in the 1850 Montgomery Co Census and 2) her second born daughter is named Mahala Caroline Holliday 3) Mary Polly are often use together, Polly being a nickname for Mary. Guardianship of the younger brothers & sisters was given to Mary Huldah Barlow Holliday Morgan's husband, Elliott Holliday Jr., circa 1843/1844? when their mother Mahala Barlow is believed to have passed away in Montgomery Co Illinois  [Larkin]

J. Morgan Corlew ........ son of Philip and Elizabeth "BARLOW" Corlew Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Montgomery County, Alexander T. Strange, Editor, Volume II Munsell Publishing Co, Chicago, 1918 Corlew, J. Morgan, one of the retired farmers of Litchfield, was formerly a very important agriculturalist of Zanesville Township. He was born one half mile north of Walshville, Illinois March 20, 1852, a son of Philip and Elizabeth "BARLOW" Corlew. Philip Corlew was born near St. Louis, Missouri, and died in 1855, and his wife was born in Illinois, and died in 1859. Left so early an orphan, J. Morgan Corlew was taken by an uncle and aunt who reared him in their home on a farm, and sent him to the district schools. When he was twenty-one years old, he began earning his own living. On December 28, 1876, he was married to Susan F. Roberts, who was born March 06, 1857, in Montgomery County near Honey Bend and was reared there. Mr. and Mrs. Corlew located in North Litchfield Township after their marriage and after several changes, during which time Mr. Corlew bought and sold a farm, they moved to Zanesville Township, where he became the owner of 200 acres of land on Section 23, and on it he carried on general farming until February 9, 1917, when he moved to Litchfield. Mr. Corlew and his daughter belong to the Primitive Baptist Church, and Mrs. Corlew is a member of the Free Methodist Church. In politics, Mr. Corlew is a Democrat. He is interested in local matters and keeps well posted on current events.

Note from Susan: I noted that Phillip Corlew, the father of the subject had died young. Illinois marriage records shows that Elizabeth Barlow married Phillip Corlew in 1843, and then a Mrs. Elizabeth Barlow married William Corlew in 1850. I'm curious if she is the same, having married brothers .... anyone know the answer?
Lewis Franklin Beck and Nancy Ann Corlew, daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Barlow Corlew

Nancy Boon:  I found this Barlow reference in my material on my grandmother, Ora Beck McMillan's family.

Lewis Franklin Beck, a son of my great2 grandfather and his first wife, married Nancy Ann Corlew, daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Barlow Corlew.

The following material is from the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Montgomery County, Alexander T. Strange Editor, Volume II published in 1918 by Munsell Publishing Co, Chicago, page 1006, and was received from Rob Appleton

"Beck, Lewis F., one of the retired residents of Litchfield, and a veteran of the Civil War, was born in Montgomery Co Illinois, December 11, 1843, a son of Moses and Lucinda "Sidwell" Beck, natives of Shelby Co Illinois. When a boy, the father came to Hillsboro, Illinois, and later became the driver of a stage running between Alton and Shelbywille, Illinois. He was married at Hillsboro, and reared three sons. His wife dying, he went to California in the company of Alexander and Hall, and was three months on the road. After remaining two and one-half years in the Golden State, he returned home by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and was married (second) to Emily C. (Barlow) Cameron. Buying a farm in Walshville Township, he located on it and died at the age of eighty-five years. His widow, who was born May 10, 1827, survives and makes her home in Nebraska. Lewis F. Beck remained at home until his enlistment for service during the Civil War in Company E, First Illinois Cavalry, at Lexington, Missouri. The regiment was captured by General Price, and its members were paroled. Later the regiment was reorganized, and Mr. Beck reenlisted in the First Missouri Cavalry, in Companies C and A, which saw service in Missouri and Arkansas, taking Little Rock, Arkansas, September 10, 1863, after which the regiment was sent to Texas. The men were discharged September 05, 1865, and Mr. Beck returned home.

On March 19, 1868, he was married to Nancy Ann Corlew, born in Montgomery Co Illinois, a daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth 'Barlow' Corlew, natives of Illinois. Following marriage, Mr. Beck bought a farm in Walshville Township, but after a year moved to Walshville and went into a merchantile business. A year later, he sold and went to Wichita, Kansas, where for two years he conducted a livery business and then sold it, and for a year was engaged in Indian fighting. He then returned to Walshville and resumed his farming. In 1889, he had a final sale, disposing of his farm and stock, and moved then to Litchfield where he built his residence and has since had his home.

His children were as follows: Maggie Olive, who is deceased; F.M., who lives at Huntington, Oregon; Edgar M., who lives at Caldwell, Idaho; F.E., who lives at Whitney, Oregon; and Emma May, who is Mrs. E.M. Hickman, of Terre Haute, Indiana. Mr. Beck is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as district steward for several years. He is a Republican and was assessor of Witt Township, and was assessor and deputy of North Litchfield Township for eleven years. He belongs to the S.B. Phillips Post, No. 375, G.A.R. and to the Masonic Fraternity." The family sources list seven children. They include those listed in the above quote and two who may have died young.

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas, Lawrence County

Joseph M. Barlow, farmer and stock raiser, came from Illinois to the State of Arkansas in the fall of 1879. His occupation on his arrival was simply farming until the year 1888, when he moved to his present place, known as the Cross Roads farm, which consists of 342 acres of land, with about 140 acres under cultivation, and now has a good frame residence, a cotton-gin, gristmill and blacksmith shop, besides his interests in stock raising. Mr. Barlow also owns a farm near by, which he rents out. This place consists of 120 acres, of which forty acres are under cultivation, and contains a fine orchard of about 100 peach and apple trees, besides a great number of small fruits. There are also a good frame and a log house on the land, which is situated one mile southeast of Portia. Mr. Barlow is a son of John and Sinah 'Finley' Barlow, of Illinois, and was born in Montgomery County, Illinois, July 14, 1841. His father died while still a young man, in 1854, and he remained with his mother until his nineteenth year, when he married and commenced farming on his own account. In the spring of 1861 he enlisted in the army and served until expiration of enlistment, and in July 1862, he once more enlisted, in the Third Illinois Cavalry, and was discharged shortly afterward on account of general disability contracted in service. In June, 1864, he entered the army again for the third time, and served until he was mustered out, October 19, 1865.  Mr. Barlow first entered the ranks as a private but soon afterward was promoted to be a sergeant and his record through the war is one that can be placed among the best of that period. He took part in the battles at Haines' Bluff, Arkansas Post, and a hot scrim- mage at Memphis, in 1865. He was also in the campaign against Hood at Nashville and in the fight at that place. Mr. Barlow was married November 17, 1859, to Miss Catherine Chapman, of Montgomery Co Illinois, who died in that locality in 1868. The children by this wife are Dora A., wife of John Davenport, and a son, who lived until his seventeenth year.  He was again married on February 18, 1869, to Mrs. Nancy L. Klutts, a widow lady, of Montgomery County, and this union has given them two children: Sinah J. and Clara E.. Mr. and Mrs. Barlow are both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which the former is district steward, and Mr. Barlow is a member of G. A. R., Lawrence Post No. 8, and is adjutant of that post. He is also a Master Mason and senior deacon of his lodge, and belongs to the Knights of Honor. In politics he is a Republican, and was elected justice of the peace for his township, and at the expiration of his term was elected county coroner. At the end of that term he was nominated for county and probate judge by the Wheel, and endorsed by the Republicans, as the latter made no nominations.  Mr. Barlow has adopted Arkansas as his future residence, and expects to live and die in Lawrence County.
